Sharing a network alone does not create a local multiplayer session: the game must support system link for that, or provide online multiplayer if you want to play over Xbox’s online services.
Connect both consoles to your home network
Use each console’s network settings to connect it to your household router, either wirelessly or with Ethernet. Xbox provides wired-connection guidance for Xbox One and Xbox 360. The exact menus can vary by console and software version.
Ethernet is optional; it is not a general requirement for two consoles connected through a home router. A cable only provides a wired connection to the network—it cannot add multiplayer support to a game that does not offer the mode you want.
Choose the multiplayer mode the game supports
System link
System link is local multiplayer between consoles, but it is available only in games that support it. Xbox says system-link play can span Original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles when the game supports the feature. That does not mean every title works across every generation: check the exact game and versions on both consoles. See Xbox’s backward-compatible games information.

Online multiplayer
If the game uses online multiplayer, follow its invite or join flow on both consoles. This is different from system link: an older Microsoft guide for a direct Xbox 360-to-Xbox 360 wireless connection describes a temporary local network that does not share an Internet connection. It is not a guide to connecting modern consoles through a household router. Read the legacy Xbox 360 networking adapter guide only for that historical setup.
Xbox’s backward-compatibility page currently says online console multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass. Plan names and entitlements can change, and requirements may depend on the game and region, so check the current Xbox plan terms for the title you intend to play.

Check game and account access before playing
On Xbox One and Xbox Series, Microsoft’s game-development documentation says multiplayer and social benefits are shared with other accounts signed in on the subscriber’s designated Home Xbox. It also says, “A single Xbox account can’t be signed into the game concurrently across two devices.” The sharing rules do not establish that every game, subscription entitlement or digital license will allow two people to play the same title at once. Review Microsoft’s product sharing model and Microsoft’s digital goods usage rules for the applicable account and license conditions.

Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

If the consoles cannot join the same game
- Confirm the game mode: look for system link or the specific online multiplayer mode in the game’s information. Being on the same Wi-Fi does not guarantee that either mode exists.
- Check both versions: verify that the game supports the two console generations and editions you are using.
- Follow the game’s joining flow: for online play, use its invite or join option and check the current service and subscription requirements for your game and region.
- Review licenses and accounts: check which console is designated Home Xbox, which account owns or accesses the game, and whether the same account is already playing on the other console.
- Use a cable only if it fits your setup: Ethernet is a connection option, not a substitute for a supported game mode or valid account access.
