Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe usual Windows method is to link Steam from the Xbox app, then sign in to Xbox Network from the Steam game if prompted. Open the Xbox app, select Profile & settings → Settings → Account, find Linked accounts or Social accounts, choose Steam, and authorize the connection.
This does not merge your Microsoft and Steam accounts or automatically transfer games, purchases, DLC, or saves. Those benefits depend on the individual game and, in some cases, its publisher account system.

What “connecting Xbox to Steam” can mean
There are three different account connections that players commonly confuse:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Xbox app social linking: Steam is added as a connected social account for your Xbox identity. This does not merge account ownership.
- Xbox Network sign-in inside a Steam game: A Steam version of a Microsoft or Xbox-published game may ask you to sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox gamertag. This is often the connection that enables achievements, multiplayer services, game profiles, or supported cross-progression.
- A publisher account connection: Some games use a separate account operated by the developer or publisher. In that case, the publisher’s account system controls the Steam-to-Xbox relationship.
Choose the route that matches your goal. For a general Xbox-app association, use the Xbox app. For a particular Steam game, the game’s own sign-in prompt is often the more important step.

Before you begin
- A Steam account and access to its email or authenticator.
- A Microsoft account with the intended Xbox profile and gamertag.
- Access to the Microsoft account’s security method.
- The Xbox app for PC if you are using the Windows app route.
- The relevant game installed through Steam if it requests linking in-game.
- An updated Windows installation, Xbox app, Microsoft Store components, Gaming Services, and Xbox Game Bar where required.
Microsoft lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher as an Xbox PC app requirement. Check the official Xbox app page for the current requirements. The page also lists app-level requirements such as 150 MB of storage and a 720p display; these are not recommended specifications for the games themselves.
Connect Steam through the Xbox app on Windows
The labels can change between Xbox app versions, but Microsoft’s documented route is Profile & settings → Settings → Account.
- Open the Xbox app on Windows.
- Check the gamerpic and gamertag in the upper-right corner. Make sure this is the Xbox profile you intend to use.
- Select Profile & settings, then choose Settings.
- Open Account.
- Find Linked accounts, Social accounts, or a similarly named section.
- Select Steam, then choose Link.
- Sign in to the intended Steam account in the browser or authorization window.
- Review the account names and approve the connection.
- Return to the Xbox app and confirm that Steam is shown as linked.
The documented menu path is described in this Microsoft Community answer referencing Xbox Support. Because the Xbox app’s layout can change, look for equivalent account-linking labels if the wording differs.

Linking Steam in the Xbox app does not necessarily complete a game’s own account association.
Connect Xbox from a Steam game
For many Xbox-connected games purchased on Steam, the decisive connection appears when the game starts:
- Install and launch the game through Steam.
- When prompted, choose Sign in to Xbox Network, Microsoft account, or the equivalent option.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account that contains the intended Xbox gamertag.
- When Steam displays an authorization overlay, check that the Steam account and Microsoft account are correct.
- Approve the connection.
- Restart the game if your profile, achievements, multiplayer access, or supported saves do not appear immediately.
The exact screens are title-specific. A Microsoft Community response describes this general in-game Steam-overlay pattern, but it should not be treated as a universal procedure for every game.
How to verify the correct accounts were linked
Before continuing, verify each identity rather than relying only on the email address you most recently entered:
- The Xbox app shows the intended gamertag.
- The Steam authorization screen shows the intended Steam account.
- The game recognizes the expected Xbox profile after a restart.
- Supported achievements, friends, progression, or cloud data appear.
- The game’s own account-management page, if it has one, lists the expected Steam and Microsoft identities.
Seeing a successful link does not guarantee that old progression will return. Cross-save, achievements, inventory, and cloud data depend on the particular title’s account architecture.

What linking transfers—and what it usually does not
| Item | General expectation |
|---|---|
| Xbox gamertag identity | May be used for Xbox Network sign-in on Steam. |
| Xbox achievements | Often available in supported Xbox-connected games, but not universally. |
| Multiplayer access | Depends on the game, account status, and platform requirements. |
| Cross-progression | Works only when the specific game supports it. |
| Xbox console purchase | Usually does not grant the Steam version. |
| Steam purchase | Usually does not grant the Xbox console version. |
| Xbox Game Pass entitlement | Does not automatically become a Steam license. |
| DLC | Frequently platform-specific; check the title’s rules. |
| Save data | May transfer only through a supported cross-save system. |
| Publisher progression | Controlled by the game publisher’s account system. |
The Xbox PC app can aggregate games from Xbox, Game Pass, and other PC storefronts, but that is a library-management feature—not proof that store ownership or licenses have merged. See Microsoft’s Xbox app documentation for the distinction.
Fix common linking problems
“This Steam account is already linked to another account”
This usually means the Steam account is attached to a different Microsoft/Xbox account, or that a previous connection was created through the game or publisher account.
- Stop attempting random account combinations.
- Sign out of the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Bar, Steam, and the affected game.
- Sign back in with the intended Microsoft account.
- Confirm the gamertag before authorizing Steam.
- Check the game’s own account-management page.
- If the link belongs to a publisher account, contact that publisher’s support team.
- Do not unlink the account casually. Some games restrict relinking or may affect progression and inventory.
The wrong Microsoft account appears
Your Windows sign-in, Xbox app account, Microsoft Store account, and intended Xbox profile may not be the same identity. Microsoft accounts can also have multiple aliases.
Verify the gamertag, not just the email address. If you cannot identify which email belongs to the profile, Microsoft recommends checking products, devices, receipts, and other services where you used the account. Its guidance is available on the Microsoft account recovery and identification page.
A Microsoft account is the sign-in identity used across services such as Xbox, Windows, Outlook, OneDrive, and Skype, while the gamertag is the associated Xbox gaming identity. Microsoft explains this relationship in its Microsoft account guidance.
The Steam link option is missing
- Update the Xbox app through the Microsoft Store.
- Install available Windows updates.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Xbox app.
- Press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar and check its account settings.
- Launch the affected Steam game and use its built-in Microsoft/Xbox sign-in flow.
- Restart Steam and the Xbox app.
- Check whether the game actually supports Xbox and Steam account linking.
- Consider regional, age-account, family-account, or service-availability restrictions.
If the option remains absent, use the game’s official support channel. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app page confirms the broader social-account and Game Bar integration, but individual games can impose their own limits.
The game keeps asking me to sign in
Make sure Steam is running, the Xbox app and Game Bar use the intended Microsoft account, and the game is fully updated. Sign out and back in rather than authorizing a different account when a cached session appears. If the game uses a publisher account, complete that account’s verification or linking process too.
Achievements, saves, or progression are missing
Restart the game and confirm that the correct gamertag is displayed. Then check the game’s official documentation for cross-save and achievement support. A successful account link cannot create cross-progression where the title does not support it, and console saves may not be compatible with the Steam version.

Xbox app linking versus Steam Link
Steam account linking associates identities and may allow a game or service to recognize your Xbox profile. Steam Link is a streaming and remote-play technology used to play a PC game on another device. Steam Link does not connect your Xbox account to Steam, transfer licenses, or provide Xbox cross-progression.
Likewise, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Remote Play, and installing an Xbox PC Store game are separate technologies. Linking accounts does not turn an Xbox PC Store game into a native Steam game.
Windows PC, console, mobile, and Steam Deck limitations
The procedure above is primarily for Windows PC. Xbox console menus and the Xbox mobile app can expose different account controls.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →On Steam Deck, you may need to complete the connection in the game’s browser or overlay flow, and success depends on the game’s compatibility and account design. The Windows Xbox app procedure should not be assumed to work natively on SteamOS.
In every case, distinguish account linking from ownership transfer: connecting a Microsoft identity to Steam does not make Xbox PC Store purchases appear as Steam products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play an Xbox-owned game through Steam after linking accounts?
Usually not. Linking accounts does not generally transfer an Xbox console or Microsoft Store license to Steam; the Steam version normally requires its own purchase or entitlement.
Can I link more than one Steam account to my Xbox account?
Do not assume so. Many games or publisher systems limit an Xbox-to-Steam association or restrict how often it can be changed.
Who should I contact if unlinking is blocked?
Contact the game publisher when the restriction appears in the game’s account portal or concerns publisher progression. Use Microsoft/Xbox support for an Xbox-level account issue.
