To get a better view in The Sims 4, frame your Sim or room first, then adjust movement, zoom and angle a little at a time. On PC and Mac, the arrow keys or WASD move the camera, Z/X or +/− zoom, and Shift makes camera movement faster. Console controls use a controller and can vary by edition, so follow the prompts shown in your game if they differ from older manuals.
Choose the camera controls for your platform
Camera movement changes what part of the scene you see; zoom changes how close it appears; rotating or changing the view changes the perspective. Try these separately rather than pressing several controls at once. EA’s tips and tricks and Player’s Guide list the following keyboard controls for PC and Mac.

| Platform | Action | Controls listed by EA |
|---|---|---|
| PC/Mac | Move left or right | Left/Right Arrow or A/D |
| PC/Mac | Move forward or back | Up/Down Arrow or W/S |
| PC/Mac | Move faster | Hold Shift while moving the camera |
| PC/Mac | Zoom in or out | Z/X or +/− |
| PS4/Xbox One | Pan the view | Hold the indicated center/option button and move the left stick |
| PS4/Xbox One | Zoom or rotate the view | Use the right stick |
The console mappings come from EA’s older PS4 manual and Xbox One manual. They may not match every current console interface or control configuration; use the in-game controls menu and on-screen prompts when they differ.

Practice framing a Sim or room
This short exercise uses the documented controls to build a feel for framing. It is a practical suggestion, not an official EA tutorial.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Create Vampires
- Unleash Supernatural Powers
- Escape to Forgotten Hollow
- Live the Immortal Life
- Pause the game or pick a quiet moment so the subject is less likely to move while you compose.
- Start with a wide view that includes the Sim or the room you want to show.
- Move the camera left or right and forward or back until the subject sits where you want in the frame.
- Zoom in gradually. Stop when the subject is clear but the scene still includes the details you want viewers to notice.
- Change the view or angle, then compare how the foreground, subject and background look.
- Repeat from a second angle. Notice which view makes the subject easiest to see and the room easiest to understand.
For screenshots, the same order helps: place the subject, refine distance, then adjust the view. Small changes make it easier to tell what each control does.
Use free camera for video scenes
For a more deliberately composed video shot, EA’s video-making guide describes pressing Tab to activate free-camera mode, repositioning the camera and choosing a new view between scenes. This mode is useful for filming and alternate compositions; it is not required for ordinary gameplay or building.
Rank #2
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Develop Parenting Skills – Level up your Sim’s parenting skills to satisfy their child’s needs and influence their behaviors. Gain new abilities through experience and choosing when to discipline bad actions, encourage good behavior, or just let kids be kids.
- Shape Your Sim’s Childhood – The decisions you make influence how your Sim parents and leave a lasting impact on their child’s future. Each choice shapes their personality, affects their traits, influences their family relationships, and guides their path into adulthood.
- Gather your Sim’s family to participate in new activities and spend quality time with each other. Sims of all ages can work together to complete a variety of school projects, express their creativity using construction blocks, or volunteer their time for good.
- Customize your Sims’ looks and their home with new family fashion and build items. Give the kids’ bedrooms extra personality, remodel the kitchen to feel homier, and let your Sims express their sporty or artistic sides with new outfits.
EA’s localized guide also warns that zooming in free-camera mode can change the field of view and produce a fisheye effect. If a shot starts to look distorted, ease off the zoom and reposition the camera instead. The guide is older, so check the controls in your current game if Tab or the camera behavior differs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteKeep camera controls separate from object rotation
Turning the view and rotating an object are different tasks. If you are trying to change the direction of furniture or another Build Mode object, use the object-rotation controls rather than the camera controls. EA treats Build Mode object rotation separately in its tips and tricks.
Rank #3
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Rule your story: Build a powerful Dynasty, shape shared Values, choose an Heir, or exile family members in a deep life simulation driven by legacy, prestige, and choice.
- Claim the crown: Rise through Nobility by winning the people, pleasing rival Nobles, dueling with swords, or exposing Scandals that can change the balance of power.
- Scandal fuels drama: Forbidden romances, secret children, and public disgrace can impact careers, relationships, Dynasty Prestige, and Noble Favor.
Do you need a camera or tripod?
No physical camera or tripod is needed to change the in-game view. EA’s Photography skill guide discusses virtual cameras and a tripod as gameplay objects for Sims taking photographs; those items are separate from controlling the player’s camera angle.
