Converting ownCloud to Nextcloud is a controlled manual migration, not a normal one-click upgrade. The documented bridge currently maps ownCloud 10.13.x, 10.14.x, 10.15.x and 10.16.x to Nextcloud 34.0.0. Verify that compatibility map immediately before production work, because supported release pairs change. Back up the configuration, database and complete data directory, test the restore, schedule downtime, then replace the application code and run Nextcloud’s upgrade and database-repair commands.

What the conversion actually does
The process keeps an existing ownCloud installation’s data and configuration while moving it onto a compatible Nextcloud codebase. It is closest to a manual application upgrade: the database schema, file metadata, user accounts and settings must be compatible with the selected Nextcloud release.

Nextcloud’s migration documentation says that nearly all ownCloud settings can move during the procedure, including users’ settings, internal and public link shares, app configuration, LDAP and external-storage settings. That does not mean every app or proprietary ownCloud extension will continue unchanged. Treat each enabled app as a separate compatibility decision.
The current administration-manual compatibility table maps these source versions to the same bridge release:

Older ownCloud versions may require one or more ownCloud upgrades before they reach a supported bridge version. The compatibility table does not justify guessing an intermediate release; identify the documented path for the exact installation.
Decide between an in-place conversion and a fresh deployment
An in-place conversion preserves the existing installation’s identity and most settings, but it ties the migration to the source database, code tree and app state. A fresh deployment gives you a cleaner operating system, PHP stack and installation method, but requires a deliberate data and configuration migration.

For a small, conventional archive installation with a supported source version, an in-place conversion is usually the shorter route. For a heavily customized, old or poorly documented server, a parallel fresh deployment may reduce operational risk even though it requires more planning.
Inventory the ownCloud server before changing anything
Create a written inventory that another administrator could use to rebuild the service. Record:
- Exact ownCloud version, including the point release.
- PHP version and enabled extensions.
- Database engine and version, database name, host and character-set details.
- Web server, virtual-host configuration, TLS termination and the operating-system account that runs PHP.
- Data-directory location, free disk space and filesystem permissions.
- Installation method: archive, package, Docker, Snap, virtual machine, Windows Server or another appliance.
- Enabled first-party and third-party apps, custom code and local patches.
- Background-job mode and the current crontab or scheduler definition.
- LDAP or directory settings, external storage mounts, encryption, previews, sharing policies and mail configuration.
- Reverse proxies, object storage, antivirus or file-scanning hooks, and integrations used by clients.
Capture configuration files and service definitions in a secure location. Do not put database passwords, encryption keys or private certificates in an unprotected ticket or document.
Back up the complete service and prove that recovery works
The migration manual specifically advises backing up the configuration, database and data directory when moving from ownCloud to Nextcloud. Make all three backups before entering maintenance mode:

- Stop or quiesce writes as appropriate for your deployment so the database and files represent a consistent point in time.
- Copy the entire
config/directory, includingconfig.php, and preserve ownership and permissions. - Dump the complete database with the database engine’s native backup tool. Include users, grants and any required routines or extensions.
- Back up the complete data directory, not just recently changed files. Preserve paths, timestamps, permissions, encryption metadata and external-storage definitions where applicable.
- Preserve the original ownCloud application tree instead of overwriting your only copy. Record the exact code version and installed apps.
- Write down the restore sequence: database restore, configuration restore, data restore, ownership correction, web-server restart and validation.
- Perform a separate restore test on a disposable host or isolated namespace. A backup is not proven until a test restore can start the service and open representative files.
Keep the pre-migration backup offline or otherwise protected from accidental deletion. Do not discard it after the first successful login; retain it until the final Nextcloud version and client synchronization have been validated.
Prepare the bridge release, PHP and maintenance window
Choose the exact bridge
Download the Nextcloud release listed for the exact ownCloud source version. Confirm checksums or signatures using the release’s normal verification process, and review the target release’s PHP, database and web-server requirements. If your ownCloud version is older than the documented range, upgrade ownCloud through its supported sequence first rather than substituting a convenient Nextcloud release.
Plan for the PHP break
ownCloud does not and will not support PHP 8.0 or higher, while the selected Nextcloud release may require a newer PHP version. Consequently, changing PHP first can make ownCloud inaccessible before the Nextcloud code is installed. Schedule the PHP change and code replacement as one maintenance event, and ensure you can switch the service back to the old PHP version for rollback.
Communicate the lockout
Nextcloud places the server in maintenance mode during the upgrade. Users cannot log in, WebDAV and synchronization clients will fail, and long-running conversions can take hours on large installations. Notify users, pause automated integrations and arrange a maintenance window long enough for the database upgrade, repair commands and validation.

Run the conversion for an archive-style installation
The following sequence describes an archive installation. Do not apply it blindly to Snap, Docker, a pre-built VM, a distribution package or Windows Server; those environments have their own update procedures and filesystem layouts.
- Put the current ownCloud service into maintenance mode using its normal administrative procedure and stop background jobs that could write during the code replacement.
- Preserve the existing
config/config.phpand the data directory. Do not let the new application archive overwrite either one. - Replace the ownCloud application code with the compatible Nextcloud code, retaining the installation’s required ownership and permissions. Keep the old application tree available for rollback.
- Use the web-server account and the path appropriate to your host to run the upgrade. A typical Debian-style command is
sudo -u www-data php occ upgrade; substitute the correct HTTP user and invokeoccfrom the Nextcloud directory. - Watch the command output and web-server, PHP and Nextcloud logs. Stop if the upgrade reports a schema, permission, PHP-extension or app error that has not been understood.
- After the upgrade completes, run the database repair commands listed in the next section.
- Confirm that the service starts with maintenance mode still enabled before allowing users back in.
The exact file-copy and service-restart commands depend on the operating system, web server and installation layout. Preserve configuration and data first; an apparently successful code copy that changes their paths can make a healthy database look empty.

Run the required database repair commands
From the Nextcloud directory, using the web-server account, run each command after occ upgrade:
sudo -u www-data php occ db:convert-filecache-bigintsudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-columnssudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-indicessudo -u www-data php occ db:add-missing-primary-keys
Use the correct PHP binary, HTTP user and working directory for your host. Review the output and logs for errors rather than assuming that a zero-length screen output means every operation was needed. Take a fresh database backup after the conversion has completed successfully.
Restore background jobs and app functionality
Correct the cron entry
Check the old crontab for an ownCloud-specific command such as occ system:cron. Nextcloud’s background-job configuration uses the PHP command shown in its administration settings, so adjust the scheduler to invoke that command with the correct path and web-server account. Run a job manually or inspect the job status to confirm that tasks are executing.
Review every app
Some ownCloud Market apps may be disabled because they are incompatible with Nextcloud. Calendar and Contacts are examples of apps that may need to be re-enabled or replaced with their Nextcloud equivalents. Review each app’s compatibility, install the supported Nextcloud version, and recheck its configuration before users depend on it.
Handle proprietary extensions
The migration page identifies File Retention, File Firewall, File Automated Tagging, File Drop and SharePoint as proprietary ownCloud extensions whose Nextcloud replacements may require reconfiguration. Export or document their policies before conversion, then recreate and test those policies in Nextcloud instead of assuming that the old app data will be interpreted identically.
Validate the converted instance before opening it to everyone
Keep maintenance mode enabled while testing. Use a representative administrator account and several ordinary accounts, including an LDAP user if the service uses a directory:

- Log in and confirm that users, groups, quotas, profile settings and app settings are present.
- Open representative small and large files, create a test file, rename it and delete it according to your retention policy.
- Test an internal share, a public link share, link permissions, expiration settings and a recipient who is not logged in.
- Connect with WebDAV and at least one supported desktop or mobile client; verify upload, download, conflict handling and resumption.
- Authenticate through LDAP and confirm group mapping, login restrictions and password changes where applicable.
- Mount each external-storage backend and test both read and write operations with the intended service account.
- If server-side encryption is enabled, verify key access and decrypt representative files before changing any encryption setting.
- Generate a preview, run a background job, send a mail notification and inspect the resulting logs.
- Open the administration area’s “Security & setup warnings” panel and resolve warnings that affect this deployment.
- Check disk usage, database growth, PHP errors, web-server errors and scheduled-job latency.
Only after these checks pass should you disable maintenance mode and invite users back. Ask a small pilot group to synchronize before removing the maintenance notice for the entire organization.

The bridge conversion is not the end of the upgrade path. Once the migrated instance is stable, use the built-in updater or the update method appropriate to the installation type.
- Upgrade to the latest point release in the current major version.
- Run background jobs and confirm that the instance is healthy.
- Review the next major version’s PHP and database requirements before starting another maintenance window.
- Upgrade one major version at a time; never skip major releases.
- Repeat the point-release, background-job and validation checks at every major step.
- Keep the original ownCloud backup until the final target version, clients and integrations have been validated.
Recheck PHP requirements between every major release. A PHP version that worked for the bridge may not be accepted by the next major, and changing it without a maintenance plan can repeat the original lockout problem.
Installation-specific limits
Windows Server
The documented migration limit for Windows Server is significant: upgrading from Windows Server is not supported beyond moving the data. Plan a supported destination and treat the Windows host as a data source rather than applying the Linux archive procedure to it.

Use the update instructions for the particular Snap, Docker, pre-built VM or distribution-package installation. These methods manage code, permissions, PHP and services differently from an extracted archive. Blindly replacing directories can break the managed runtime or discard persistent volumes.
Custom code and integrations
Local patches, custom apps, reverse proxies, object storage, antivirus hooks and identity integrations require explicit compatibility checks. Disable or isolate custom code during the bridge upgrade, then reintroduce it one component at a time while monitoring logs.

Common failure modes and recovery
The source version is not in the compatibility table
Stop before downloading a bridge. Upgrade ownCloud through its documented path until it reaches a supported source version, or plan a fresh Nextcloud deployment. Choosing the nearest-looking release can produce an unsupported database transition.
PHP changed and ownCloud no longer loads
Do not continue experimenting on the only copy. Restore the previously supported PHP runtime or switch traffic to the preserved original host, then perform the code replacement and PHP change as one controlled event.
An app blocks the upgrade
Read the app error, identify whether a Nextcloud-compatible replacement exists, and disable or remove the incompatible app only after preserving its configuration and data. Re-enable it after installing a supported version and testing its settings.
The database upgrade stops
Leave maintenance mode enabled, preserve the logs and do not run repeated schema commands at random. Compare the error with the target release’s requirements, restore the pre-migration database if the supported procedure cannot resolve it, and restart from the documented bridge.
Users see missing files after the code swap
Check config/config.php, the data-directory path, filesystem ownership and external-storage mounts before changing the database. A wrong path can make an intact data directory appear empty.
You need to roll back
In-place downgrades are unsupported and can corrupt the installation. Restore the original ownCloud application tree, compatible PHP runtime, configuration, database and data directory from the tested backups, or build a fresh supported installation and restore the data there. Keep Nextcloud offline until the restored service has passed the same login, file, share and integration checks.
When to use professional migration help
Nextcloud describes its migration tool as the easiest migration route and offers a special ownCloud-to-Nextcloud migration service. Enterprise customers can receive migration support, and partner or sales channels can arrange custom enterprise work. These are service options, not a universal free program or a published fixed price. They are most relevant when the installation is large, highly customized, regulated, distributed across several storage systems or difficult to take offline.
Whether you use a service or perform the work yourself, require a written cutover plan, a tested restore, an app inventory, a maintenance-window estimate and an explicit rollback decision before touching production.
