For a portfolio of low-risk sites with compatible software, start with one adequately sized VPS. Use virtual hosts, separate Unix accounts, least-privilege permissions, monitoring and per-site backups. Move a site to its own VPS when its traffic, runtime, security boundary, maintenance window or uptime target differs materially from the others. Add a load balancer only when independent scaling or high availability justifies the extra operational work.

The short answer
One VPS can serve many domains. Apache virtual hosts and nginx server blocks examine the requested hostname and return the matching site’s files or application. DigitalOcean’s support guidance, verified 13 July 2026, says that an unlimited number of domains can point to one Droplet and that multiple websites can be served from it. That is a configuration capability, not a performance guarantee: CPU, memory, database I/O, storage and bandwidth still limit how much traffic the machine can handle.

The right choice depends on the sites’ workload and risk profile, not on the number of domain names alone.
How multiple domains share one VPS
DNS and virtual hosting
Each domain’s DNS records point to the VPS address. The web server then uses the HTTP Host header or HTTPS server-name indication to select a virtual host (Apache) or server block (nginx). Each site can have its own document root, TLS certificate, logs, runtime settings and application configuration while sharing the same kernel and base operating system.

What “unlimited domains” does and does not mean
The web server may accept many hostnames, but every request consumes resources. Ten lightly visited brochure sites can be easier than one busy application with a large database. A site that exhausts memory, fills the disk or saturates CPU can affect every domain on the machine unless you impose per-site limits and monitor them separately.

When one VPS is the better design
Compatible, low-risk sites
Consolidation fits small or moderate sites that use the same operating-system family and web stack, have similar release windows and can tolerate one maintenance domain. A portfolio of static sites, small content sites and low-volume stores often benefits from this arrangement. You patch one host, maintain one firewall policy and inspect one set of system metrics.

Controls that make consolidation safer
- Create a separate Unix account and document ownership for every site; never run all applications as one shared user.
- Use distinct database users and credentials. Bind database services only to required interfaces and deny unnecessary remote access.
- Set file permissions so one site’s application process cannot write to another site’s code or uploads.
- Apply host-level and provider network firewalls, exposing only required ports such as HTTP, HTTPS and tightly restricted administration.
- Use per-site PHP-FPM pools, process limits, rate limits or container/jail boundaries where the stack supports them.
- Keep separate access logs, error logs and deployment records so a noisy or compromised site is identifiable.
These controls reduce accidental crossover; they do not turn one VPS into independent security domains. Treat the host as one compromise and recovery boundary unless stronger isolation is demonstrably maintained.
When several VPS instances are worth the overhead
Different traffic patterns
A high-traffic application can consume CPU, memory, database connections or disk I/O in bursts. Isolating it prevents those bursts from starving quieter domains and lets you resize only the busy workload.

Incompatible software stacks
Separate instances avoid forcing every site onto one runtime version or system library. This is valuable when one application needs an older interpreter, a different database release, custom kernel settings or a vendor package that conflicts with another site’s dependencies.
Different security or customer boundaries
Client sites, payment-related workloads, administrative applications and untrusted code may require distinct credentials, patch windows and incident procedures. A separate VPS narrows the likely blast radius and simplifies evidence collection after an incident, although it does not replace secure application code or account management.

Different maintenance and recovery requirements
If one owner demands weekend maintenance while another requires weekday changes, separate instances prevent a single schedule from blocking both. Sites with different recovery-point or recovery-time objectives can also receive appropriately sized backup and replication systems.
The price of that flexibility is operational multiplication: every instance needs an inventory, operating-system updates, firewall rules, monitoring, backups, alert routing and tested access. A small fleet without automation can be less reliable than a carefully managed single host.

High availability requires more than two servers
Running two VPSs does not automatically provide failover. Traffic needs a routing layer that knows which instance is healthy. AWS’s 2026 WordPress guidance recommends an Application Load Balancer for HTTP or HTTPS sites when multiple domains must be distributed across EC2 instances in multiple Availability Zones. Health checks remove failed targets, and Auto Scaling can change capacity as demand changes.
Components you must design
- Routing: DNS or a load balancer must direct each hostname to the correct target.
- Health checks: Checks should test an endpoint that proves the application and its critical dependencies work, not merely that a port is open.
- Shared or replicated data: Uploads, databases, sessions and generated assets must be available to every healthy instance.
- Consistent deployments: Configuration, code and secrets must be released identically or versioned deliberately across targets.
- Observability: Centralized logs and metrics are needed to explain failures that span the load balancer and backend hosts.
This architecture adds load-balancer charges, extra networking and a larger failure-analysis surface. Use it for a defined availability target, not simply because more servers sound safer.

There is no universal domains-per-VPS number. Capacity is workload-driven. Measure each site’s peak CPU, resident memory, application concurrency, database I/O, storage growth and bandwidth, then leave headroom for deployments, backups and traffic spikes.
DigitalOcean’s 2026 catalog illustrates the range of hardware choices rather than a domain limit: Basic shared-CPU Droplets list 1–8 vCPUs and 1–32 GB of RAM; General Purpose dedicated-CPU Droplets list 2–48 vCPUs and 8–240 GB; memory-optimized options reach 384 GB of RAM. These are provider catalog ranges, not recommendations for a particular number of domains.

Metrics to collect before deciding
- CPU utilization and load during normal peaks, deployments and scheduled jobs.
- Resident memory, swap activity and per-process limits, especially for PHP workers or application runtimes.
- Database latency, connection counts, cache hit rates and disk I/O wait.
- Disk space, inode use, upload growth and backup size.
- Requests per second, bandwidth and outbound traffic by hostname.
- HTTP error rate, queue depth and time-to-first-byte for each site.
DigitalOcean summarizes the sizing trade-off this way: “An oversized Droplet would underuse its resources and cost more, but an undersized Droplet running at full CPU or memory would suffer from degraded performance or errors.” Size from observed demand, review the trend over several weeks and resize before saturation becomes an outage.
Compare the real monthly cost
Compare total operating cost, not just the advertised VPS line item.

Several small plans can cost more because each carries baseline memory, storage, address and management overhead. One large plan can cost more when it is oversized merely to absorb occasional peaks. Model normal usage, peak usage and the cost of an outage before choosing.

Backups are required in either architecture. A provider snapshot or whole-server image is useful for disaster recovery, but it is not a per-site restore plan. Restoring it may roll back unrelated domains, and a snapshot on the same provider does not protect against account or provider failure.

- Export each site’s files, database and configuration to storage outside the VPS.
- Retain multiple versions so ransomware, bad deployments and delayed corruption are recoverable.
- Record the restore order, including databases before applications that depend on them.
- Test restoring one site without overwriting neighboring sites.
- Verify that TLS certificates, cron jobs, environment secrets, DNS records and mail settings are included or reproducible.
Separate VPSs narrow the default restore scope, but they do not remove the need for application-aware, off-server copies.
A practical migration path
- Consolidate compatible sites: Start on one adequately sized VPS, create separate accounts and configure virtual hosts or server blocks.
- Instrument before optimizing: Collect several weeks of per-site CPU, memory, I/O, bandwidth, latency and error metrics, including scheduled jobs and backups.
- Classify exceptions: Identify sites with sustained high load, incompatible runtimes, sensitive data, different maintenance windows or stricter recovery targets.
- Extract selectively: Move those sites to their own instances. Keep credentials, firewall rules, monitoring and backups distinct during the move.
- Lower DNS TTLs: Reduce the time resolvers cache records before a planned migration, then restore a sensible TTL after validation.
- Rehearse rollback: Keep the old site available until DNS propagation, TLS, cron, mail delivery, application writes and monitoring have been verified.
- Add availability components only when needed: Introduce a load balancer, replicated state and health checks when a stated uptime target cannot be met by one host.
Decision checklist
- Choose one VPS when the sites share a stack, have similar risk and can accept one maintenance and failure domain.
- Choose separate VPSs when traffic, runtimes, customer boundaries, security exposure or recovery requirements differ.
- Choose a load-balanced multi-instance design only when you can operate health checks, consistent deployments and shared or replicated state.
- In every model, enforce per-site accounts, least privilege, firewalls, monitoring and tested off-server backups.
Common failure modes and fixes
One site makes every site slow
Check per-site CPU, memory, database connections, disk I/O and outbound traffic rather than only host averages. Apply process and rate limits, optimize the offending workload or move it to a separate VPS.
A whole-server snapshot cannot restore one customer cleanly
Use independent file-and-database backups, retain versions externally and practice a single-site restore into an isolated directory or temporary instance.
Several servers drift out of sync
Automate patching and configuration, keep an inventory of versions and centralize logs and alerts. A fleet is only an isolation benefit when it is consistently maintained.
A “high-availability” pair still sends users to a dead node
Configure application-aware health checks and verify failover with a controlled test. Confirm that sessions, uploads and database writes remain available after a node is removed.
Bottom line
For compatible, low-risk domains, one properly sized VPS is usually the simplest and most economical starting point. Build real isolation inside it and maintain per-site backups. Split out the workloads whose traffic, software, security or uptime requirements justify an independent failure domain. Scale from one host to several—and then to a load-balanced design—only as measured demand and a defined availability target require it.
