How to Convert Fortnite Replay Files to MP4: Capture a Replay as Video

Fortnite .replay files are playback data, not video. To create an MP4, play the replay in Fortnite and record the scene with screen-recording software.

You can’t convert a Fortnite .replay file directly to MP4. It stores replay data that Fortnite plays back as a game scene, not finished video. To make a shareable MP4, open the replay in Fortnite, choose and play the moment you want, and record the playback with screen-recording software. Epic says Fortnite has no direct replay-export option.

Why a Fortnite replay file isn’t an MP4

A .replay file is an in-game recording Fortnite reconstructs during playback. You can scrub its timeline and change camera views, but it does not contain a rendered video that a media player or ordinary converter can simply encode. Epic’s documentation puts it plainly: “Replays does not make videos.” Epic’s replay instructions explain that you capture the scene by recording its playback.

Epic Support says there is currently no way to export replays directly from Fortnite. Renaming the file from .replay to .mp4, or feeding it to a standard video converter, will not render the gameplay into video.

How to record a Fortnite replay as an MP4

  1. Check that the replay still works. Open Fortnite and try playing it before setting up your capture. Replays are version-dependent: they only play in the Fortnite version in which they were recorded, and updates or game changes can make them unusable. If the clip matters, record it before updating when possible. See Epic’s replay compatibility guidance.
  2. Open the replay in Fortnite. Epic’s documentation describes finding replays from the Career tab, selecting one, and playing it. Menus can change between updates, so use the current in-game replay entry if its location or label differs.
  3. Find and frame the moment. Scrub the timeline to the action you want, then use the available replay camera controls to set the viewpoint. Depending on the shot, you may want to follow a player or use another camera angle. Epic’s replay guide describes playback and camera controls.
  4. Start a screen recording, then play the scene. Use screen-recording software available on your device. Start recording before you play the selected section, and stop when the shot is complete. Epic’s documented method is to prepare the shot in Replays and capture it with screen-capture or screen-recording software; it does not prescribe a particular recorder.
  5. Export the captured recording as MP4. If the recording software saves in another format, use that software or a video editor to export the captured video to MP4. This encoding step applies to the new screen recording, not to the original .replay file. Epic’s guidance does not specify a recorder, codec, resolution, or export setting.

Set up the replay for a cleaner capture

Before recording, adjust the replay and game presentation for the shot you want. Epic’s Creative replay instructions cover camera controls and HUD visibility, and suggest choosing display and graphics settings the device can handle. They also note that you can reduce music volume if it interferes with the capture. Available controls and labels may differ by platform or change with updates, so verify them in your current game version.

Replay compatibility and platform limits

Replay availability is not universal. Epic’s support information says replay playback is available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, and unavailable for Save the World. The same support page describes limits on saved replays by platform; those limits and menu details can change, so check Epic’s current replay-feature support page for the applicable platform information. A standard media player is not a substitute for Fortnite’s replay system.

What about Postparty or a dedicated converter?

Epic Support recommends Postparty for recording and sharing gameplay moments. That recommendation concerns gameplay clips; Epic’s cited guidance does not say that Postparty imports or converts an already-saved .replay file. For an existing replay, the documented route is still to play it in Fortnite and capture the playback.
