The reliable workflow is to inspect the source, choose a container and codecs for the intended player, run a deliberately explicit command, then verify the file and the resources the job consumed. A basic conversion can be as short as ffmpeg -i 'input.mp4' 'output.avi', but production jobs should make stream selection, quality, logging and failure handling visible.

FFmpeg is a universal media converter: it can read ordinary files, pipes and network streams and write one or more outputs. A VPS is useful for unattended or batch work, but it does not make transcoding free. CPU time, memory, storage, I/O and bandwidth are shared with every other service on the machine.

FFmpeg is a command-line program rather than a single “convert” preset. It demuxes an input container, decodes its streams, optionally filters them, encodes them with the codecs you select, and muxes the results into an output container. Those layers are independent: a container such as MP4 packages streams; a video codec compresses pictures; an audio codec compresses sound; filters transform frames; and protocols describe how data is read or written.
The official command synopsis is:
ffmpeg [global_options] {[input_file_options] -i input_url} ... {[output_file_options] output_url}Anything that is not interpreted as an option is treated as an output URL. That is why option placement matters: input options belong before the corresponding -i, while output options belong before the output filename. FFmpeg can also read from standard input and write to standard output, which makes it suitable for pipelines, although a VPS job should still have a clear temporary-file and logging strategy.

Prepare the Linux VPS
Install FFmpeg and record the build
On Debian- or Ubuntu-based systems, install the distribution package and record the version before creating scripts:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
ffmpeg -versionOther distributions use their own package manager. If the distribution package is too old or lacks an encoder or filter you need, use a maintained FFmpeg build appropriate for that distribution. Do not assume that two builds expose the same hardware encoders or optional libraries; the version output and capability listings are part of the job’s documentation.
Check space, permissions and service impact
A conversion can require the source, a growing destination and temporary data at the same time. Check the filesystem that will hold both the temporary and final files:
df -h /path/to/work
ls -ld /path/to/work
idThe account running FFmpeg must be able to read every input and create, rename and delete files in the destination directory. Keep work files on the same filesystem when you plan to rename a temporary output atomically. Before scheduling several jobs, determine how much CPU, RAM, disk I/O and network capacity the VPS can spare. Concurrency that is harmless on an idle server can interfere with a game server, database or web application sharing the instance.
Inspect the input before converting
Do not choose codecs from a filename extension alone. Use ffprobe to inspect streams, duration, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, language tags and container metadata:
ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format 'input.mp4'You can also run ffmpeg -i 'input.mp4' without an output. FFmpeg prints the detected streams and build information in its input log, then exits because no output was requested. Inspection tells you whether the source contains multiple audio tracks, subtitles, variable frame rate video or a codec your target player cannot decode.
For remote inputs, first consider reliability. A network URL can fail halfway through, change while it is being read or consume bandwidth needed by other services. Downloading to a local, uniquely named source and then converting that stable file makes retries and verification much easier. When a pipe is required, make the producer’s exit status and FFmpeg’s exit status visible in the surrounding script; a successful-looking output is not proof that the producer delivered complete media.
Choose a container and codecs deliberately
Start with the device or player that will consume the result. Compatibility is determined by the combination of container, video codec, audio codec, pixel format and sometimes profile or level—not by the extension alone. Quality, file size, CPU time and operational simplicity trade off against one another. A highly compressed codec may reduce storage but take longer to encode; copying an already compatible stream is fast but does not make an incompatible stream playable.
For a delivery file commonly expected to be MP4, explicitly select the codecs instead of relying on build defaults. This example uses a software H.264 encoder and AAC audio:

'output.mp4'The values in this command are starting settings, not a promise of a particular quality or size. Test them with the actual footage and player, then adjust them for your requirements.
-i 'input.mkv'names the source. Quote paths so spaces, brackets and shell metacharacters are not interpreted by the shell.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream from input zero.-map 0:a:0?selects its first audio stream when one exists; the question mark prevents a failure when the source is silent.-c:v libx264chooses a software H.264 encoder. The encoder must exist in your build; list available encoders withffmpeg -encoders.-preset mediumchooses an encoding-speed/compression trade-off. A slower preset generally spends more CPU for a smaller result at a comparable quality target, while a faster preset finishes sooner with a larger result.-crf 23uses constant-rate-factor quality control for this encoder. Lower values request higher quality and usually larger files; the useful range depends on content and player constraints.-c:a aac -b:a 128kre-encodes audio to AAC at the stated target bitrate. Use a bitrate and channel layout your playback environment accepts.-movflags +faststartrelocates MP4 metadata so a file can begin playback before the entire file has downloaded. It does not reduce the encode time or improve the encoded quality.
The short documented pattern remains useful for quick experiments:
ffmpeg -i 'input.mp4' 'output.avi'It lets FFmpeg select output formats from the extension and defaults, but those defaults vary with the build and are not a good basis for a repeatable delivery pipeline.
Copy or re-encode each stream
When a stream is already encoded in a form accepted by the destination container and player, stream copying avoids decode and encode work:
ffmpeg -i 'input.mp4' -map 0 -c copy 'output.mkv'-c copy copies the selected streams without generational quality loss. It cannot change resolution, remove interlacing, burn subtitles or make an unsupported codec compatible. A copy can also fail if timestamps or codec/container rules are unsuitable, so inspect and verify the result.
For mixed requirements, copy one stream and transcode another. For example, preserve compatible video while converting audio:
ffmpeg -i 'input.mkv'
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 128k
'output.mp4'Use explicit mapping whenever an input has commentary, alternate languages, attachments or several video streams. Without mapping, FFmpeg’s automatic stream selection may choose a stream that is technically valid but not the one your audience expects.
Add filters only when the output needs them
Filtering decodes and processes frames, so make it visible in the command and verify the result afterward. Keep one -vf chain per output and quote expressions that contain commas or shell characters.
Scale while preserving the aspect ratio
ffmpeg -i 'input.mp4'
-vf 'scale=1280:-2'
-c:v libx264 -crf 23 -c:a copy
'output-1280.mp4'The fixed width requests 1280 pixels; -2 lets FFmpeg calculate an even height from the source aspect ratio. Check the source dimensions first and choose a target that does not enlarge a small image unnecessarily.

Crop or deinterlace
A crop filter uses the width, height and offsets you specify. This example keeps a 1280-by-720 region starting at the top-left corner:

'output-crop.mp4'Do not copy this geometry blindly; it must fit the source and the framing you want. Interlaced footage needs a deinterlacing filter before scaling or encoding. A common chain is:
ffmpeg -i 'interlaced-input.mpg'
-vf 'yadif,scale=1280:-2'
-c:v libx264 -crf 23 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
'progressive-output.mp4'Inspect the output on motion-heavy scenes. A filter can remove combing while also changing detail and frame timing.
Burn subtitles into the picture
To permanently render an external subtitle file, use the subtitles filter when your FFmpeg build includes the required subtitle support:

-vf "subtitles='captions.srt'"
-c:v libx264 -crf 23 -c:a copy
'output-burned.mp4'Burned subtitles cannot be switched off and require a video re-encode. If the player supports a separate subtitle stream, keeping it separate is more flexible; map that stream intentionally and confirm that the chosen container accepts it.
Make filenames and writes safe
Shell quoting is part of media correctness. Always quote variables and paths, avoid reusing a destination name as an input, and generate unique names for concurrent jobs. A destination such as movie.mp4.part.1842 makes it clear that an incomplete file must not be served.
For automation, write to a temporary file and rename only after FFmpeg exits successfully. A rename within one filesystem is atomic from the perspective of readers, so consumers see either the old complete file or the new complete file, not a half-written file. Remove failed temporary files and retain the log that explains the failure.
Run long conversions without losing the job
Use a terminal multiplexer for an ad-hoc job

'output.mp4' > 'transcode.log' 2>&1Detach with the multiplexer’s detach command and reconnect later with tmux attach -t transcode. Redirecting standard output and error to a named log keeps the FFmpeg progress and diagnostics available after you disconnect.

Use a service manager or queue for recurring work
For scheduled or user-submitted conversions, run a wrapper script from the VPS service manager or a queue worker. The wrapper should receive a fixed input and output directory, reject unexpected paths, limit the number of simultaneous jobs and preserve exit status and logs. A service manager can restart a failed process, apply resource limits and make startup behavior explicit; a queue can provide the same controls while tracking pending and completed jobs. Choose one mechanism rather than launching untracked background processes from a web request.

Keep concurrency intentional
One encode can use substantial CPU and write continuously to disk. Starting more processes does not guarantee higher throughput: they can contend for cores, RAM, storage bandwidth or network capacity. Measure on the actual VPS, then set a conservative worker limit that leaves headroom for the services sharing the machine. There is no universal conversion-speed figure to copy from another server.
Verify the output and the job status
FFmpeg’s exit status is the first check, not the only one. A shell script should stop on a non-zero status, and a scheduled job should record that status with its log. Then inspect the output:

ffmpeg -v error -i 'output.mp4' -f null -The first command confirms the container, streams, duration and metadata. The second decodes the output without writing another file; any reported decode errors deserve investigation. Compare the intended duration, resolution, audio presence and subtitle behavior with the source and your delivery requirements.
Check the resulting size with du -h 'output.mp4'. For a timed test of one command, /usr/bin/time -v can report elapsed time and peak memory on systems that provide it. Treat that observation as specific to the VPS, input and settings; it is not a transferable benchmark.
Optional hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration is an optimization path, not a prerequisite for basic conversion. It depends on the VPS exposing suitable hardware, installing compatible drivers, granting the service account access to the device, and shipping an FFmpeg build with the needed components. Hardware decoding or encoding can also introduce memory copies and synchronization overhead, so it may fail to outperform a well-tuned software command for a short or lightly compressed file.
Discover what the build and host expose
ffmpeg -hwaccels
ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'vaapi|qsv'The hardware-acceleration list shows components enabled in that build; it does not prove that the current VPS has usable hardware. The encoder list shows whether a relevant VAAPI or QSV encoder is present. If the device is not exposed by the hypervisor or the driver is absent, an FFmpeg option cannot create that capability.
VAAPI on Linux
VAAPI commonly uses a render device under /dev/dri. Check which devices exist and whether the account running the job can open the render node. Device permissions, group membership and container isolation are frequent causes of “device not found” or permission errors.
After confirming an encoder such as h264_vaapi exists, a minimal example is:

'output-vaapi.mp4'The exact device path, pixel format and encoder availability vary by host and build. Test the command with a short sample, inspect the output, and compare end-to-end time and resource use with the software version before changing a production queue.

Intel QSV and other exposed devices
QSV is another acceleration component listed by FFmpeg’s manual. Its usable encoders and initialization requirements depend on the Intel hardware, driver stack and FFmpeg build supplied by the VPS. Treat the encoder listing and a successful test conversion as prerequisites, not assumptions. If a GPU instance is being considered for sustained throughput, compare its total cost and operational complexity with adding CPU capacity; acceleration is an optional capacity decision.

A repeatable conversion script
The following wrapper demonstrates the operational safeguards in one place. It requires a source and destination argument, writes a unique temporary file, captures a log, and renames only a successful result:

fi-nostdin prevents an unattended process from waiting for keyboard input, while -y allows the controlled temporary path to be replaced. In a multi-user service, add validation that the source and destination stay inside approved directories, and assign each job its own log and temporary name.
Troubleshoot by symptom
“Unknown encoder” or “Encoder not found”
The installed build does not contain the requested encoder, or its optional dependency is unavailable. Check ffmpeg -encoders, confirm the exact encoder name, and either install a maintained build that provides it or select a software encoder that your build includes.
“Permission denied”
Check both the file and every parent directory with ls -l and ls -ld. The service account needs read access to the input and write, rename and delete access in the work directory. Hardware jobs additionally need permission to open the exposed render device.

“No space left on device”
Inspect df -h and locate abandoned temporary files and logs. Do not delete an active job’s source or temporary output. Increase working space, clean completed artifacts according to a retention policy, or process files in a directory on a larger filesystem.
The output has no audio or the wrong language
Inspect all streams with ffprobe and use explicit -map options. Automatic selection may choose the first stream rather than the language or commentary track you intended. If the destination container cannot carry the original audio codec, transcode that stream instead of using -c:a copy.
The hardware command fails or is slower
Recheck -hwaccels, the encoder listing, driver installation, device permissions and the device path. Confirm that the VPS actually exposes the hardware. Compare a short, representative sample with software encoding; memory transfers and initialization can outweigh acceleration benefits.
The job stops when the SSH session closes
Run the process inside tmux or under a service manager and redirect logs. A detached shell alone does not provide queueing, restart behavior, cleanup or a reliable record of the exit status.
