To cook food in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, interact with a usable fire or stove and look for the cook prompt at its pan or cooking surface. A communal pot is generally for taking a serving, not for cooking ingredients from your inventory. For longer journeys, carry dried fruit or dried meat: food spoils over time, and dried food lasts longer.
How to cook food at a fire or stove
- Find a usable fire or stove.
- Aim around its cooking area—especially the pan or cooking surface—until the cook prompt appears.
- Use the prompt shown on screen and follow the available interaction. The exact control can vary by platform and location.
The interaction is with the cooking spot, rather than with a communal meal pot. This pan-and-prompt guidance comes from gameplay references and player reports, not an official universal control guide.

Why the pot may not let you cook
A pot at a camp can be a communal food container: interact with it to eat, rather than to prepare ingredients you are carrying. Look for a separate usable cooking surface nearby. If no cook prompt appears, move your aim across the fire and surrounding cooking area, or try another usable stove or fire; the prompt can be easy to miss.
Cooking versus drying food for a journey
| Option | What it is for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking | Preparing food for immediate use. | Use a cooking spot and its on-screen prompt. Patch 1.4 says Henry was re-taught how to cook eggs. |
| Drying | Keeping food useful longer while travelling. | Senior game designer Ondřej Bittner recommends dried fruit or dried meat for a long trip because food spoils over time and dried food lasts longer. |
| Smokehouse drying | Preserving food where a smokehouse is available. | Patch 1.4 added the ability to select multiple items for drying in the smokehouse. |
| Eating from a communal pot | Taking food at a camp or other communal cooking area. | Generally an eat-from interaction, not a way to cook ingredients in your inventory. |
These are purpose-based distinctions, not a complete item-by-item comparison: the cited sources do not establish a verified set of cooking times, nourishment values, or spoilage thresholds for every food.

Food spoilage and survival needs
Food spoils over time. In an official developer post dated November 1, 2024, senior game designer Ondřej Bittner described eating and sleeping as immersion systems rather than a difficult survival grind: “It’s not hard to be rested and well fed and so on.” The post also says ordinary meals are not intended to grant extra strength to axe swings or increase sprint speed. Pack dried fruit or meat when you expect to be away from reliable food sources for a while.
Community food references describe food as affecting nourishment, energy, and health, and warn that spoiled food can cause food poisoning. Treat exact item stats and thresholds as version-sensitive; they are not official patch specifications.

Deep Silver’s Patch 1.4 notes identify three food-and-drink changes: Henry was re-taught how to cook eggs, alcoholic drinks take longer to spoil, and players can select multiple items for smokehouse drying. PLAION Support’s Patch 1.5.6 page—the latest numbered patch page listed in that support center when checked—does not describe a cooking change. That statement applies to the cited support page, not necessarily every platform or any later update.
