To counter a strong champion in League of Legends: Wild Rift, identify what is making them dangerous, then answer that threat with a suitable pick, safer lane decisions, and items that fit the enemy team’s damage and your own composition. No champion is a guaranteed counter in every matchup: the right response depends on the lane, patch, draft, and how the game develops.
This guide reflects Riot’s official notes through Patch 7.3a, published September 29, 2026. Balance-sensitive champion details can change, so check the latest notes and live-client item information before relying on a specific matchup or build.
Start by identifying the threat
“Strong” can mean several different things. A counterpick that handles one problem may do little against another, so first work out how the opponent is gaining an advantage. Riot’s official Wild Rift patch notes can help establish recent balance changes and the situations Riot intended to address; they are not a universal matchup guide.
- Range or poke: The champion can pressure you before you can trade back. Look for a pick that can farm safely, avoid repeated exposure, or threaten an engage when the opponent overextends.
- Early all-in: The champion can win direct fights early. Favor a plan that limits extended trades and preserves a way to disengage or respond with help from your team.
- Scaling: The champion becomes more dangerous with levels or items. Consider whether you can pressure them before that window or whether your composition can withstand it and win elsewhere.
- Crowd control or durability: The champion may enable their team or survive attempts to focus them. Account for the rest of the enemy lineup, not just the lane opponent.
- Objective pressure: The champion’s value may come from helping their team secure fights or map objectives. A lane-only advantage is not enough if the opposing team can still control those moments.
Patch 7.3a includes balance changes to Hwei, Samira, Rammus, and Malphite, while Patch 7.3 made broader marksman, item, jungle, and ranked pick/ban changes. Those updates are a reminder to check the current version rather than carry forward old assumptions about a champion’s strength or build.

Choose a pick for the matchup and the draft
There is no official universal counterpick table in the cited Riot notes, and the available patch information does not establish matchup win rates. Treat a pick as a conditional answer: it should reduce the specific threat you identified, be a champion you can play effectively, and still make sense for your team.
Compare options on the factors that matter
| Factor | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Lane safety | Can you farm and avoid losing too much health when the opponent pressures you? | A theoretically favorable matchup is of little use if you cannot play the lane reliably. |
| Punish window | Can your pick threaten the opponent when they use their key approach or step too far forward? | A counter should change how safely the opponent can apply their strength. |
| Power timing | Do your strongest moments arrive before, during, or after theirs? | Timing determines whether to contest early, wait for a spike, or ask your team to play around another part of the map. |
| Team fit | Does your team still have the damage, engage, and frontline it needs? | Winning one lane can leave the overall draft weaker if the pick duplicates roles or removes a needed tool. |
| Item flexibility | Can you adapt to the actual enemy damage and threat profile? | Items can help address a problem, but should not be selected in isolation from your champion and team. |
Riot’s Patch 7.3 notes described the marksman update as an effort to create clearer champion strengths, build paths, and power curves. In the design team’s words, “Our goal is to create clearer strengths, build paths, and power curves across the marksman roster, so how you choose to carry depends more on the champion you’re playing, and how you play them.” That supports choosing a pick and build around the champion’s actual strengths rather than assuming every marksman wants the same answer.

Play the lane around the opponent’s power window
Once the game begins, lane strategy should respond to the opponent’s tools and current state rather than to a generic “counter” label. Patch notes can indicate what Riot changed and why, but they do not supply a full lane walkthrough for every matchup. Avoid treating an unverified cooldown, range, or trade pattern as a guaranteed opening.
Before trading
- Notice whether the opponent is trying to poke, force an all-in, or wait for a scaling window.
- Keep enough room to retreat if their main threat is an engage or crowd control.
- Do not take a prolonged fight merely because your pick is described as favorable; judge health, levels, items, and nearby allies.
Manage the wave and ask for help deliberately
Use the wave to reduce the opponent’s access to you or create a safer opportunity to contest them. If their strength depends on pushing or forcing you away, avoid unnecessary trades that make it harder to farm. If you need to punish an overextension, coordinate with your jungler or nearby teammates rather than assuming you can win the exchange alone. The precise wave position and trade depend on the champion and lane; Riot’s cited notes do not establish a single correct sequence for every matchup.

Reassess after the first exchanges
If the opponent is ahead, switch from trying to prove the counterpick to limiting the damage: protect farm where possible, avoid isolated fights, and communicate the threat to your team. If you gain an advantage, use it to support your team’s plan instead of chasing a risky duel. A draft answer is only a starting point; the opponent’s actual choices determine what is safe in lane.
Adapt items to the threat and your team
Build for the enemy’s real damage and the job your champion needs to do. A defensive purchase can reduce the risk of being burst or controlled, but it may delay damage or another needed power spike. An offensive purchase can help you pressure a target, but it does not solve a teamwide threat by itself. Consider the whole opposing lineup and your team’s needs before changing your build.

- Against a damage threat, identify whether the danger is physical, magic, or mixed before committing to a defensive direction.
- Against a durable opponent, consider whether your champion can contribute to dealing with them without abandoning your role or team’s damage balance.
- Against a marksman, do not copy a build from an older patch without checking the current item path and costs. Patch 7.3 specifically changed marksman itemization and intended to make build paths more distinct.
As patch-specific context, Riot’s Patch 7.3 notes state that base critical strike damage changed from 175% to 200%, and Last Whisper’s armor penetration changed from 12% to 15%. These are historical Patch 7.3 figures, not a recommendation for a particular matchup or confirmation of current live-client stats. A pick or ban is made before the match; lane tactics and purchases respond to what actually happens afterward. Riot’s Patch 7.3 notes include ranked pick/ban changes, so draft rules can depend on mode and rank. Check the current client’s rules for the queue you are playing rather than assuming that a draft option is available in every mode.
