Choose a PSP if you want to play physical PSP UMD discs; choose a PlayStation Vita if you want Vita game cards, a second analog stick, and—on the original model—a larger, higher-resolution OLED screen. The Vita cannot play UMDs, and its support for digital PSP games is limited to compatible titles. Store access also matters: Sony says new Vita Store purchases will end in each region starting July 2027. Check your region and the games you want before buying.
Start with the games and formats you want
The biggest difference is not the console’s age or general library size; it is how you can access particular games. PSP games came on UMD discs as well as being sold digitally. Vita games use Vita game cards or digital downloads. These formats are not interchangeable.
- Have PSP UMDs? You need a PSP with a UMD drive. The PSP Go is digital-only and has no UMD drive.
- Want Vita game cards? Choose a Vita; a PSP cannot play Vita cards.
- Want PSP games on a Vita? Check that each specific game is supported for digital use. Owning its UMD does not give you access to a Vita copy.
Sony’s Vita compatibility information and Vita user guide describe the limits: some PSP software is incompatible, and some titles cannot be downloaded or copied to the system.
What each handheld offers
| Feature | PSP-2000 | Original Vita OLED (PCH-1000) |
|---|---|---|
| Game formats | UMD discs and supported digital PSP games | Vita game cards and digital Vita games; supported digital PSP games |
| UMD drive | Yes; read-only | No |
| Display | 4.3-inch TFT, 480×272 pixels | 5-inch OLED, 960×544 pixels |
| Analog controls | One analog stick | Two analog sticks |
| Storage details | Memory Stick PRO Duo slot; PSP saves may require storage | Memory card needed for PSP game saves; card needs vary by model and use |
These are model-specific manufacturer specifications, not measurements of every revision or an independent test of screen quality. Sony’s PSP-2000 specifications also list a weight of approximately 189 g including the battery. Sony described that revision as 33% lighter and 19% slimmer than the PSP-1000; those figures should not be applied to every PSP model.

Controls: the Vita has more flexibility
The Vita’s second analog stick can make games designed around two sticks more comfortable to control. For supported PSP games, Sony’s guide lets you assign PSP controls to the Vita’s right stick. That can be useful, but it does not mean every PSP title gains better controls.
The Vita also has a front multi-touch screen and a rear multi-touch pad. These are part of the Vita’s hardware, but whether they matter depends on how a particular game uses them. If your priority is a straightforward PSP experience or playing with original PSP controls, a PSP may be the better fit.

Screen: the original Vita has the larger, sharper panel
The original Vita OLED model has a 5-inch, 960×544 display; the PSP-2000 has a 4.3-inch, 480×272 TFT display. On published specifications, the Vita offers both more screen area and higher resolution. The comparison is specifically between those models: it is not a claim about every later Vita revision or a hands-on verdict about color, brightness, or image quality.
Sony’s Vita guide also offers optional bilinear filtering for PSP games. Sony cautions that results vary: some games may still look rough, and filtering may make little visible difference. Consider this a setting to try rather than a guarantee of improved graphics.

Digital purchases are time-sensitive
Sony’s current PlayStation Store notice says, “Starting July 2027, the PlayStation Store will close on PS3 and PS Vita in your region.” After the applicable regional closure, new purchases through the Store on those devices will not be possible. Check Sony’s notice for your region before relying on a purchase window; the date is regional, and the page may be updated.
This is about making new purchases, not a statement that all previously acquired content will stop working. Sony lists content and services that will continue to work on the notice page, so check its current details if access to an existing digital library is important to you.

- Sony PSP 3000 International Console, Fully Technician Tested.
PSP commerce functionality retired on July 2, 2021, according to Sony’s April 19, 2021 announcement. That announcement also said PS3 and Vita stores would remain open at the time; Sony’s current notice supersedes that statement for future Vita purchases.

A used console’s included storage can affect what you can do with it. Sony’s Vita guide says PSP game saves use a memory card and notes a card requirement for the PCH-1000 series. Card needs otherwise depend on model and use, so verify whether a suitable card is included rather than assuming the console comes with one. The PSP-2000 has a Memory Stick PRO Duo slot.

Which one should you choose?
Choose a PSP if…
- You own PSP UMDs or specifically want to play physical UMD games. Confirm that the model has a UMD drive; the PSP Go does not.
- You want PSP hardware and controls rather than a newer handheld’s alternative controls.
- You are comparing PSP models and can verify which one is being sold, along with its condition and included storage.
Choose a Vita if…
- You want to play Vita game cards or digital Vita games.
- You prefer two analog sticks and the original OLED model’s larger, higher-resolution screen.
- You want some PSP games on the same handheld and have checked that each desired title is supported digitally.
- You have confirmed regional Store availability for any digital games you still need to buy.
Neither choice is a universal winner. Decide by checking the games and formats you actually want first, then compare the specific used units available to you.
