Craft a Minecraft Clock with four Gold Ingots and one Redstone Dust. What a Minecraft Clock does
A Clock is a portable daylight indicator. Its dial animates to represent the current position of the Overworld sun and moon: the bright portion corresponds to daytime and the dark portion to nighttime. You do not read it like a wall clock with numbered hours. Instead, watch the dial’s transition to estimate whether daylight is beginning, continuing or ending.

That distinction matters when you cannot see the sky. A tunnel, mineshaft, enclosed base or underground farm can hide the normal day-and-night cycle. Carrying a Clock lets you decide whether to keep working, return to the surface or wait for safer conditions outside. Mojang’s Duncan Geere described it this way: “A reasonable alternative is to build yourself a clock out of gold and redstone, which shows the position of the sun.”
The item reports daylight; it is not a timer that counts minutes for your machines and it does not emit a redstone signal. If you need a mechanism to trigger repeatedly, use purpose-built redstone components instead of treating the Clock as a redstone device.

The complete cost is four Gold Ingots and one Redstone Dust, producing one Clock. The same arrangement is documented for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. The pattern is shaped like a plus sign: gold on the four cardinal points and redstone in the middle.
How to craft a Clock step by step
- Collect four Gold Ingots. Smelt or otherwise obtain enough gold for four ingots before opening the table. Nuggets, ore and blocks are not interchangeable with the ingot requirement in this recipe.
- Collect one Redstone Dust. You need dust as the center ingredient, not a redstone block or another redstone item.
- Open a crafting table. The recipe uses the table’s three-by-three grid rather than a two-by-two inventory grid.
- Place the Redstone Dust in the exact center square. This is the middle cell of the nine-slot grid.
- Place one Gold Ingot in each cardinal slot. Put gold in the top-middle, middle-left, middle-right and bottom-middle cells.
- Check the corners. The top-left, top-right, bottom-left and bottom-right cells must remain empty.
- Take the Clock from the result slot. The output is one Clock. Move it to your inventory or hotbar before closing the table.
Reading the pattern without a visual guide
Imagine the center redstone as the hub of a compass. The four gold ingots point north, west, east and south relative to the grid. If you accidentally put gold in a corner, the shaped recipe will not produce the item. Reposition the ingot into one of the four straight-line slots and keep the center occupied by redstone.

- Confirm that the center slot contains Redstone Dust.
- Confirm that exactly four Gold Ingots are present.
- Confirm that each ingot is in a straight-line slot next to the center.
- Remove any item from a corner.
- Make sure you are using a crafting table with a three-by-three grid.
How to use the Clock underground
Put the Clock in your hotbar and select it whenever you need to inspect the dial. You can also keep it in your inventory and move it to a visible slot when checking the time. The bright and dark areas provide a broad answer—day is approaching, day is in progress, or night is approaching—rather than a precise numeric timestamp.
Mining decision
Suppose you are deep below the surface and have finished gathering materials. A brightening dial suggests that dawn is approaching in the Overworld; a darkening dial warns that night is arriving. Use that information with your remaining food, tools and route length to decide whether to continue or head back. The Clock does not reveal your coordinates or guide you to an exit, so pair it with a marked tunnel, map or other navigation method.

Building and farming underground
Enclosed construction areas can make the outside cycle easy to forget. Keep a Clock visible in your hotbar while shaping a basement, tunnel network or underground work area. Checking it before you open an exterior entrance helps you avoid stepping out without knowing whether daylight has ended. The item can also be placed in an item frame when you want a fixed, visible indicator in a room; its useful reading still depends on being in the Overworld.
Leaving shelter
The Clock is especially useful when you are waiting indoors for a safer time to travel. Mojang’s explanation presents it as a way to judge when it is safe to leave shelter. Treat that reading as a daylight estimate, not a guarantee that every route is safe: terrain, hostile mobs and your own equipment still determine the risk.

Not as a dependable time signal. Clocks function properly in the Overworld, where the normal daylight cycle runs. In dimensions without that daylight cycle, the dial cannot provide a reliable interpretation of day and night. The Nether is therefore a poor place to use a Clock for scheduling travel or deciding when to leave a base.
The same rule applies more broadly: before relying on the item, ask whether the dimension has the normal Overworld sun-and-moon cycle. If it does not, treat the display as unusable for time decisions. Do not carry a Clock into another dimension expecting the bright and dark portions to retain their Overworld meaning.

A practical dimension rule
- Overworld: The Clock is meaningful because the normal daylight cycle is present.
- Dimensions without that cycle: The display is unreliable and should not be used as a schedule.
This is a reliability limitation, not a crafting limitation. You can craft the item before entering another dimension, but crafting it does not make its display work there.
Can you get a Clock without crafting?
Yes. Item references document Clock generation in loot, including ruined-portal chests and edition-specific structure tables. Finding one this way depends on locating the relevant structure and on the chest’s generated contents, so it is chance-based rather than guaranteed.

Loot is useful when exploration comes first or when a chest happens to contain the item before you have gathered the recipe materials. If you are choosing between the two approaches, think in terms of control versus chance:

A Clock remains useful in three common forms:

- Item frame: Mount it in a base or workroom as a glanceable display.
An item frame does not change the Clock’s rules. It only makes the dial easier to see in a fixed location. Whether held, stored or framed, the indicator is dependable only in the Overworld.

Clock versus other ways to track time
The right method depends on whether you need daylight information, a precise elapsed interval or a machine signal. A Clock answers the first question only.

A reliable underground routine
A Clock becomes most useful when it is part of a repeatable routine rather than a last-second rescue. Use this sequence when working below ground:
- Check the dimension first. Only use the reading for decisions in the Overworld.
- Check the dial before entering a long tunnel. Note whether it is brightening or darkening.
- Estimate your return window. Consider how far you are from an entrance and whether you still need to smelt, craft or collect materials.
- Recheck at a natural pause. Inspect the Clock after finishing a branch, clearing a room or returning to a junction.
- Choose shelter deliberately. If night is approaching and your route is long, return to a secured area rather than relying on the Clock to protect you.
This routine uses the Clock for what it can actually tell you—daylight position—while leaving navigation, combat and resource management to other tools and decisions.

Putting gold in the corners
The recipe is shaped. Four corner ingots do not count as the four cardinal placements. Move each ingot one cell inward so the arrangement forms a plus sign around the central redstone.

Using the wrong redstone item
The recipe calls for one Redstone Dust in the center. If the center slot is empty or contains another redstone form, the expected result will not appear.

Trying the recipe in the inventory grid
The documented pattern uses a crafting table. Open the three-by-three table and repeat the placement there.
Expecting a redstone output
A Clock is an information item. It shows the daylight position but does not function as a redstone timing component. Use separate redstone components when a circuit must receive a signal.
Reading it in the wrong dimension
If the dial seems meaningless outside the Overworld, that is a dimension limitation rather than a damaged item. Return to the Overworld for a dependable day/night reading.
Assuming a loot chest must contain one
Ruined-portal and other documented structure loot can generate Clocks, but chest contents are situational. If you need a guaranteed result, gather the recipe ingredients and craft one.

The recipe is documented for current Java and Bedrock references with the same ingredient count and placement.
