Add the specified liquid to the cauldron, process ingredients with the mortar when required, time each stated turn with the hourglass, and then either pour the brew into a phial or distil it at the still.
How to brew a potion at the alchemy bench
Use the in-game recipe booklet as your authority for the potion you want. Recipes vary: ingredients may need to be ground, added in a particular order, heated for a particular number of turns, or finished by distillation rather than direct bottling. The procedure below explains the bench actions; it does not replace a recipe’s individual instructions.

- Choose the recipe and gather its ingredients. Check the required base and ingredient quantities. Set out the ingredients and a phial; recipes that call for distillation also require the still.
- Add the specified liquid base. Pour water, wine, oil, or spirits into the cauldron, as listed by the recipe.
- Process and add ingredients in recipe order. Put any ingredient marked for grinding in the mortar and use the pestle. Add the ground ingredient to the cauldron when the recipe directs; add other ingredients as instructed.
- Heat for the stated turns. Lower the cauldron toward the fire and use the hourglass to time each turn. If a turn specifically calls for the bellows, use them during that turn. Do not use the bellows automatically on every recipe.
- Finish the brew as directed. Raise the cauldron after the listed heating is complete. Pour the potion into a phial if instructed, or use the phial at the still to distil it. These are different finishing actions, so follow the recipe.
GameSpot’s February 3, 2025 alchemy guide explains turns as hourglass-timed heating with the cauldron lowered. KCD2.org’s guide, updated September 9, 2026, likewise cautions that bellows are only for recipes that call for them: KCD2.org alchemy guide.
What recipe instructions mean
Base and ingredient order
The base is the liquid that goes into the cauldron first. Ingredient count and sequence are part of the recipe, not suggestions: adding an ingredient before another, or using the wrong quantity, can affect the result.

Grinding
“Grind” means process the ingredient in the mortar with the pestle before adding it to the cauldron. Do not put an ingredient in the mortar unless the recipe calls for it.
Turns and bellows
A “turn” is a timed heating interval, measured with the hourglass while the cauldron is lowered toward the fire. Follow the listed number of turns. Use the bellows only when the recipe explicitly requires them.

Pouring and distilling
When the instruction says to pour, use a phial at the cauldron. When it says to distil, use the phial at the still. A phial is needed to bottle the result, but pouring and distilling are not interchangeable.
Example recipes to learn the process
These examples show why it is important to read each recipe through before starting. Quantities, turns, and finishing actions below are recipe instructions reported by KCD2.org’s guide; check the in-game booklet for the potion you are making.
Marigold Decoction
- Base: water.
- Ingredients: one nettle and two marigolds.
- Method: add the nettle and boil for two turns. Grind and add the marigolds; do not boil again. Pour directly into a phial.
Saviour Schnapps
- Base: wine.
- Ingredients: one nettle and two belladonna.
- Method: add the nettle and boil for two turns. Grind and add the belladonna, then boil for one turn. Pour directly into a phial.
- Use: enables manual saving.
Nighthawk
- Base: water.
- Ingredients: two eyebright, one belladonna, and one chamomile.
- Method: grind and add the eyebright; add belladonna and boil for three turns; grind and add chamomile, then pour into a phial.
- Use: the guide describes it as useful for night vision and slower energy loss.
Aesop
- Base: spirits.
- Ingredients: one belladonna, one boar’s tusk, and two comfrey.
- Method: grind and add comfrey, add the boar’s tusk and boil for two turns, then grind and add belladonna and distil.

Generally, no: KCD2.org and PowerPyx report that most recipes can be attempted before buying or reading their recipe pages, and that the first successful brew records the recipe in the herbarium. There are exceptions for some story-quest and DLC recipes, which may have relevant quest or expansion requirements. Why a brew may fail or have lower quality
Using the wrong base, ingredient count, order, grinding, heating, or finishing action can lower a potion’s quality or waste ingredients. Accurate execution and fresh herbs improve consistency, while alchemy skill and perks affect quality and how forgiving the process is. The guides describe four quality levels: Weak, Regular, Strong, and Henry’s. GameSpot reports that the Secret of Secrets perk unlocks exceptional quality and Secret of Matter yields an additional potion; KCD2.org specifies Secret of Secrets at level 16. These are guide-reported mechanics, not patch-independent guarantees.
