You can keep a YouTube stream live with a still image and looping audio by using OBS Studio as an encoder: create a scene with the image, add either a looping audio file or a playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube stream key, then start and monitor the broadcast. The stream stays live only while the encoder continues sending its feed, so plan for power, internet, monitoring, and rights to the music—not just the initial setup.
Choose how the audio should repeat
- One file: Add it as a local Media Source in OBS and enable Loop. Use this when you want the same track to repeat.
- Several files: Use OBS’s VLC Video source, load the local files as a playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. Use this when you want multiple tracks to cycle.
OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Choose files you have permission to broadcast; owning or possessing an audio file does not itself grant live-streaming rights.
Build the still-image and audio scene in OBS
- Create a scene. In OBS, add a new scene for the continuous broadcast.
- Add the image. Add an Image source and select the still image you want viewers to see. Check the preview to confirm that it fills the canvas as intended.
- Add the audio. For a single track, add a Media Source, select the local file, and enable Loop. For multiple tracks, add a VLC Video source, select the playlist files, and enable Loop Playlist.
- Check the mix. Play the source and watch OBS’s audio meters. Confirm that the sound is audible and not clipped, then stop playback while you finish configuring the stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open the streaming settings, choose the YouTube service if available, and enter the stream URL and key. Keep the key private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Set the output format and encoding before going live. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to your resolution and frame rate that your upload connection can sustain; test it rather than assuming a particular connection can carry it.
- Start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview for both picture and audio, then confirm the stream is live before leaving it unattended.
Test the setup and plan for interruptions
Run a test before relying on the broadcast. Confirm that the image remains visible, the audio loops or advances through the playlist as expected, and the Live Control Room reports a healthy feed. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and monitoring stream quality. A continuous stream depends on the encoder continuing to send video and audio; official guidance does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime from a single broadcast.
- Software encoder: OBS is the software route described above. The computer running it must remain on and connected, and the encoder must keep sending the feed.
- Hardware encoder: YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events. The cited guidance does not require a particular device or say that a new purchase is necessary. Whichever route you choose, consider how you will monitor the feed and recover if it stops.
- Archive expectations: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, make a local archive backup and do not promise viewers that YouTube will retain the full continuous broadcast.
Clear music rights and follow YouTube’s rules
YouTube requires the content provider to have all necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from the relevant artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Confirm that your permissions cover live streaming and the territories where you expect the stream to be available. Live content must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A playlist that plays correctly in OBS is not necessarily cleared for broadcast.

Troubleshooting common problems
- There is no audio in the preview: Check that the correct source is selected, that its audio meter moves in OBS, and that the Live Control Room preview includes sound. Confirm the file plays locally.
- A single track stops instead of repeating: Reopen the Media Source properties and check that Loop is enabled.
- The playlist ends: Check that the files are loaded in the VLC Video playlist and that Loop Playlist is enabled. If the source does not load, confirm VLC is installed and matches the OBS architecture; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC.
- The image or audio is missing from YouTube: Check the OBS scene and sources, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before treating the broadcast as ready.
- The stream does not connect or drops: Verify the stream URL and key in OBS, then check the connection and encoder status. A dropped feed interrupts the continuous broadcast; restore the encoder feed and verify the preview again.
- The video is unstable: Test at a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, using the appropriate resolution and frame rate. Keep the keyframe interval at YouTube’s recommended two seconds and no more than four seconds, then retest and monitor stream quality.
Or let it run in the cloud
