The most reliable setup is to let OpenClaw run the always-on agent and use Claude Code as the engineering workspace: install OpenClaw, complete onboarding, open its workspace in Claude Code, then have Claude Code generate configuration, write Skills, and diagnose logs. Claude Code can create and edit the files, but it does not keep the OpenClaw agent running. A persistent workflow therefore needs a logged-in computer, server, VPS, or managed platform.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenClaw, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
Choose the integration pattern first
“Using Claude Code with OpenClaw” can mean three different architectures. Pick one before installing anything, because they have different runtime and maintenance requirements.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| OpenClaw plus Claude Code | OpenClaw Gateway and its daemon | Creates configuration, edits Skills, investigates logs, and helps test changes | A normal OpenClaw deployment with an AI-assisted development workflow | You still have to install, secure, and host OpenClaw |
| MCP or Gateway bridge | OpenClaw Gateway | Talks to OpenClaw sessions through an MCP connection or an attached session | Operating existing OpenClaw conversations from Claude Code | Some bridge commands are community-provided or have not been confirmed in current official documentation |
| ClaudeClaw-style replacement | Claude Code session and the ClaudeClaw project | Provides the environment in which the OpenClaw-style agent is built and operated | Trying an OpenClaw-like experience without using the OpenClaw Gateway | Events arrive only while the session is open unless you add a persistent background process |
For most people, use the first pattern. Add an MCP bridge only when you specifically need Claude Code to operate an existing Gateway session. Choose a ClaudeClaw-style project only when replacing the OpenClaw runtime is an intentional decision.
What you need before starting
- A computer or server on which OpenClaw can run.
- A supported Node.js installation. One third-party setup guide lists Node.js 24.16 or newer, or 26.1 or newer, and recommends the 26 line; that requirement was not confirmed in the official installation excerpt, so check the current OpenClaw documentation before installing Node.
- One of npm, pnpm, or Bun for the OpenClaw installation.
- A Claude Code installation and an authenticated Claude Code session if you want Claude Code to edit the workspace.
- Credentials for the chat channel and model provider you intend to configure. Treat those credentials as secrets, not as ordinary source files.
- A plan for uptime. A laptop works for interactive development; an always-on bot needs a machine that remains available and, on some operating systems, a logged-in user session.
Do not begin by asking Claude Code to invent a complete configuration from memory. OpenClaw configuration is nested JSON, and a small spelling or nesting error can prevent the Gateway from starting. Give Claude Code the current schema or documentation you are using, ask it to explain each proposed key, and validate the result with OpenClaw before enabling a daemon.

Path 1: install OpenClaw, then use Claude Code to extend it
1. Install OpenClaw with your package manager
The official installation page provides separate commands for npm, pnpm, and Bun. Use the command for the package manager you already maintain, rather than mixing package managers in one installation. On npm 12, and on npm 11.16 or newer, the official snippet includes the --allow-scripts=openclaw allowance. Copy the current command from that page exactly; package-manager flags can change between releases.
After the package is installed, the key onboarding command is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesopenclaw onboard --install-daemon
Onboarding sets up the initial configuration and attempts to install the background service. For scripted provisioning, the onboarding reference shows:
openclaw onboard --non-interactive --accept-risk --install-daemon
--accept-risk is required for the non-interactive form. Without it, onboarding exits with an error instead of silently accepting the risk acknowledgment. Review the generated configuration and credentials after a scripted run; non-interactive setup is convenient for repeatable deployment, not a substitute for a security review.
2. Verify the installation before editing configuration
- Print the installed version:
openclaw --version
- Check for configuration problems:
openclaw doctor
- Check whether the Gateway is running:
openclaw gateway status
Run these checks before asking Claude Code to troubleshoot. They separate a missing binary, a malformed configuration, and a stopped Gateway—three problems that otherwise look similar from a chat client.

3. Understand how the daemon behaves on each operating system
| Platform | Service mechanism | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| macOS | LaunchAgent | A logged-in user session is required for the service to run. |
| Linux and WSL2 | systemd user unit | Onboarding tries to enable lingering so the Gateway can survive logout. |
| Native Windows | Scheduled Task, with a Startup-folder fallback | Confirm which mechanism onboarding selected and test it after a reboot. |
A successful installation does not prove that the service will survive a logout, reboot, or network interruption. Test the exact lifecycle you need: start the Gateway, log out or reboot, then run openclaw gateway status again.

4. Open the OpenClaw workspace in Claude Code
One common arrangement is to start Claude Code from the OpenClaw workspace, typically ~/.openclaw, so edits are made where the Gateway watches for configuration and Skill changes. The exact workspace location can differ, so confirm it in your installation before changing files.
This directory may also contain channel credentials. Give Claude Code the narrowest access that still lets it perform the task:
- Ask it to inspect configuration structure without printing secret values.
- Keep tokens in the designated secret or environment mechanism instead of pasting them into prompts.
- Review the diff before allowing changes to provider, channel, network, or permission settings.
- Keep a backup of the last known-good configuration so a generated edit can be reverted.
5. Have Claude Code generate configuration in controlled passes
- Describe the outcome. State the model provider, chat platform, operating system, whether the Gateway must survive logout, and which Skills are required.
- Request a schema-aware draft. Tell Claude Code to produce the nested JSON using the current OpenClaw keys, and to mark any key it cannot verify instead of guessing.
- Review the security surface. Check channel allow-lists, authentication, network exposure, file permissions, and every location where a token is referenced.
- Apply one logical change. Do not combine a provider migration, a new chat channel, and a Skill rewrite in one unreviewed edit.
- Validate. Run
openclaw doctor, then inspectopenclaw gateway status. If either reports a problem, revert the last change before adding another. - Exercise the workflow. Send a test message through the selected channel, trigger the relevant Skill, and inspect logs for the expected route and response.
Claude Code is an authoring and debugging assistant in this arrangement. It does not replace the Gateway process, the daemon, or the server that hosts them.
6. Add Skills and debug behavior with Claude Code
Use Claude Code for the repetitive engineering work around OpenClaw: drafting a Skill, explaining its inputs and outputs, checking error paths, and tracing a conversation through logs. Ask for a small test case before enabling a Skill on a live channel. When behavior is unexpected, provide the relevant redacted log section and the exact configuration version; avoid uploading entire log files that may contain user messages or credentials.

A useful division of responsibility is:
- OpenClaw: Gateway lifecycle, channel connections, routing, and execution.
- Claude Code: file editing, code generation, test design, log analysis, and rollback preparation.
- You: approval of permissions, secrets, network exposure, and production changes.
Model routing: a practical policy, not a required recipe
A third-party configuration guide suggests sending heartbeat work to a smaller, faster model, using a stronger model for normal conversations, and falling back to another provider if the primary provider is unavailable. The guide gives Haiku for heartbeats, Sonnet for conversations, and DeepSeek as an outage fallback. Treat this as an optimization suggestion, not an official OpenClaw pattern; model names and configuration keys change, and older examples may reference retired Claude 3.5 identifiers.
| Workload | Suggested policy from the guide | What to verify before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Heartbeat or periodic check | Use Haiku-class routing | Current model ID, heartbeat configuration key, and the cost and latency behavior of the selected provider |
| Interactive conversation | Use Sonnet-class routing | Current model ID, context limits, and channel-specific response requirements |
| Provider outage | Fall back to DeepSeek | Authentication, prompt compatibility, privacy requirements, and whether the fallback supports every Skill |
Ask Claude Code to show the proposed routing diff and to identify every model identifier it cannot verify. Never copy an old blog snippet merely because its JSON looks valid.
Path 2: connect Claude Code to an existing Gateway
Official-looking commands that require confirmation
A third-party guide describes openclaw mcp serve as a stdio MCP server that connects to the Gateway over WebSocket and exposes routed chat conversations as MCP tools. It also describes openclaw attach as launching Claude Code bound to a Gateway session. The search material did not confirm these commands or provide attach flags in current official documentation. Before running either command, check the current OpenClaw command reference and use the syntax documented for your installed version.
Do not infer that a command is supported just because your shell accepts it. Confirm the subcommand, required authentication, transport, and session-selection behavior, then test it against a non-production conversation.

claude mcp add openclaw -- npx openclaw-mcp
The bridge needs a Gateway token. The README says to obtain it from gateway.token in the OpenClaw configuration. This is not an official OpenClaw integration, so pin the package version you have reviewed, restrict the token’s scope where possible, and remove the MCP registration when you no longer need it.
Because MCP servers can receive prompts and return conversation data, treat the bridge as a privileged integration. Keep it local unless remote transport is explicitly required, protect the token, and inspect which tools the server exposes before granting Claude Code access.

ClaudeClaw is a community project that builds an OpenClaw-style workflow into Claude Code rather than using the OpenClaw Gateway. Its setup wizard covers model selection, heartbeat behavior, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and security after installation as a Claude Code plugin.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The defining limitation is runtime lifetime: events arrive only while the Claude Code session remains open. For an always-on deployment, the write-up recommends a persistent terminal or background process such as tmux or a systemd service. That adds operational work—process supervision, logs, restarts, upgrades, and secret handling—that the OpenClaw daemon path is designed to address.
Choose this path when you specifically want the agent’s control loop to live in Claude Code. Do not choose it merely to avoid learning OpenClaw’s configuration; you may end up maintaining both a plugin and a long-running process.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Decide where the workflow should stay online
| Location | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Local laptop | Fastest for development; credentials and files stay close to you | Sleep, logout, reboots, and changing networks interrupt service; macOS requires a logged-in session for the LaunchAgent |
| Server or VPS | Better uptime and predictable networking; suitable for systemd-based operation | Requires hardening, updates, backups, firewall decisions, and monitoring |
| Managed platform | Can simplify deployment and routine service operation | Review data handling, access controls, backup policy, vendor lock-in, and the exact OpenClaw version offered |
Claude Code can prepare files on any of these targets, but it cannot compensate for an unavailable machine. Define the uptime requirement first, then choose the host.
Troubleshoot in the order the failure occurs
The command is not found
- Confirm that the package-manager installation completed.
- Open a new shell so the executable path is refreshed.
- Run
openclaw --versionbefore attempting onboarding. - If Node.js is the problem, compare your version with the current official requirement; do not rely solely on the unconfirmed third-party version range.
Onboarding stops in non-interactive mode
Include --accept-risk when using --non-interactive. The documented scripted form is openclaw onboard --non-interactive --accept-risk --install-daemon. If your installed version reports a different flag set, stop and consult its current onboarding reference instead of forcing the command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Gateway is installed but not running
- Run
openclaw doctorand fix configuration errors first. - Run
openclaw gateway statusto distinguish a stopped service from a bad configuration. - Check the operating-system service mechanism in the table above.
- On macOS, confirm that the same user is logged in.
- On Linux or WSL2, check whether user-service lingering was enabled and whether the user unit is active.
- On Windows, inspect the Scheduled Task or Startup-folder fallback selected during onboarding.
A generated configuration will not load
- Restore the last known-good file.
- Ask Claude Code to compare the failing and working versions and identify only structural differences.
- Validate one section at a time: provider, channel, routing, then Skills.
- Check for outdated model IDs copied from older examples.
- Run
openclaw doctorafter each correction.
The MCP bridge connects but exposes no useful conversation
- Verify that the Gateway is running independently of Claude Code.
- Confirm the token location and value, without printing the token in a prompt or log.
- Check whether the bridge expects a local stdio process or a remote WebSocket endpoint.
- Confirm that the bridge package version matches the README syntax you followed.
- Test with a disposable session before granting access to production channels.
ClaudeClaw stops receiving events
Check whether the Claude Code session closed, the terminal slept, or the background process was killed. An always-on deployment requires a persistent terminal or service supervisor and a restart policy; an open browser window alone is not an uptime strategy.
Security checklist before connecting a real channel
- Redact tokens from prompts, screenshots, pasted logs, and version-control history.
- Restrict Claude Code’s writable scope to the files it must change.
- Review every generated permission and channel allow-list.
- Keep the Gateway and MCP bridge bound to the narrowest network interface that meets your need.
- Use separate test credentials for initial Skill development.
- Record a rollback copy of configuration before each change.
- After an incident, rotate Gateway and channel tokens rather than merely editing the configuration file.
- Check logs for user messages and personally identifiable information before sharing them with any external service.
A repeatable day-to-day workflow
- Check
openclaw gateway statusand confirm the expected version withopenclaw --version. - Open Claude Code in the OpenClaw workspace, or connect through the reviewed MCP bridge.
- State one task: configuration change, Skill change, or diagnosis.
- Ask Claude Code for a plan and a minimal diff, including keys it cannot verify.
- Review secrets, permissions, model IDs, and channel impact.
- Apply the change and run
openclaw doctor. - Exercise the smallest relevant test conversation.
- Inspect logs, then either keep the change or restore the rollback copy.
- For production hosts, test the service after logout or reboot before declaring the workflow complete.
This separation keeps Claude Code productive without confusing configuration generation with agent execution. OpenClaw remains responsible for the running Gateway; Claude Code becomes the controlled interface for building and maintaining it.
