How to Create a Custom Crosshair in Fortnite (2026 Guide)

Fortnite only lets you show or hide its built-in reticle. Here are the practical PC and console alternatives, plus overlay risks and troubleshooting.

Fortnite does not currently let players create a fully custom crosshair in its own settings. Epic supports only turning the built-in reticle on or off. To display a different design, use a gaming monitor with a built-in crosshair or, on Windows, a third-party overlay—with important anti-cheat and compatibility cautions.

What Fortnite’s native settings allow

Epic’s current support documentation says that custom crosshairs are not supported in Fortnite. There is no in-game editor for changing the reticle’s shape, color, thickness, size, opacity, outline, or center dot.

You can only control whether Fortnite displays its built-in reticle:

  1. Open Fortnite and select your Profile Icon in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Settings using the gear icon.
  3. Open the Game UI tab.
  4. Find Reticle & Damage Feedback.
  5. Set Reticle to On or Off.
  6. Select Apply.

During a match, open the menu with Esc on PC and Mac, Options on PlayStation, Menu on Xbox, or + on Nintendo Switch. Then select the gear icon to reach Settings. If the option is missing, return to the lobby and select the intended game mode; Fortnite’s available settings can depend on the active mode. See Epic’s controls and settings guidance.

How to display a custom crosshair

Option 1: Use a monitor crosshair

Some gaming monitors can draw a crosshair through their on-screen display. Look under menus such as Gaming, Game Assist, or Aim; the label varies by manufacturer and model.

Because the monitor draws the marker over the video signal, this method works independently of Fortnite and does not require an overlay application. It is the most practical option for PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The available designs, colors, shortcuts, and customization controls depend entirely on the monitor. Fortnite itself still has no console custom-crosshair setting. See Game8’s console overview for examples of this hardware approach.

Option 2: Use a Windows overlay

On Windows, an overlay application can place a custom marker over the game. One example is Crosshair X, which advertises controls for line length, width, opacity, offset, color, blur, rotation, center dots, outlines, T-shaped designs, screen position, and firing or bloom behavior. It also supports PNG and SVG export according to its store listing.

  1. Open Crosshair X.
  2. Press Windows + G to open Xbox Game Bar.
  3. Open the Widget menu.
  4. Add or open the Crosshair X widget.
  5. Adjust the design and position.

The vendor states that Crosshair X supports Windows 10 and Windows 11 and requires Microsoft Game Bar. Its safety or anti-cheat compatibility statements are vendor claims, not Epic approval.

Third-party overlay risks

Epic says Fortnite does not officially support third-party software and that it cannot determine or disclose whether a specific program can result in a ban. Epic’s Terms of Service prohibit cheats, unauthorized tools that provide an unfair advantage, and tampering with or circumventing gameplay-integrity tools.

A simple visual overlay is not the same as a shader modification, but there is no blanket Epic approval for every crosshair program. Epic also warns that BattlEye blocks certain visual-enhancement and shader-modification tools. For the lowest risk:

  • Do not modify Fortnite’s files.
  • Do not inject code into the game or interact with game memory.
  • Do not use ReShade, shader modifications, macros, or scripts.
  • If Fortnite reports a disallowed program, remove it and restart the game.
  • Treat every third-party overlay as unsupported and use it at your own risk.

For Epic’s position, read Epic’s third-party software support article and its BattlEye disallowed-program guidance.

Fixing common problems

The native Reticle option is missing

Return to the lobby, select the correct mode, and reopen Settings → Game UI. Fortnite can show different settings depending on the selected or active experience.

The custom overlay is invisible

  • Confirm the overlay application and Game Bar widget are running.
  • Press Windows + G and reopen the widget.
  • Check that the overlay is assigned to the correct monitor.
  • Reposition it after changing resolution, aspect ratio, display scaling, or monitor arrangement.
  • Restart both Fortnite and the overlay.

Saved monitor-specific positions or presets can help when using more than one display, but the exact behavior depends on the overlay.

The overlay disappears in fullscreen

Overlay behavior varies with the application, Game Bar, graphics API, and display mode. Test these steps in order:

  1. Verify that the crosshair appears on the Windows desktop.
  2. Reopen it with Windows + G.
  3. Confirm that Fortnite is running on the intended monitor.
  4. Try Windowed Fullscreen or Windowed mode.
  5. Restart Fortnite and the overlay.
  6. Remove the overlay if Fortnite reports a disallowed program.

The native and custom crosshairs do not align

Either align the external marker with Fortnite’s native reticle, or disable the native reticle at Settings → Game UI → Reticle & Damage Feedback → Reticle → Off → Apply. An external marker is only a visual guide: it does not reproduce weapon-specific spread, bloom, recoil, projectile travel, or optic reticles, and it does not improve the weapon’s actual accuracy.

Creative and UEFN islands

Fortnite creators have options that regular players do not. In Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite, creators can build custom HUD elements using custom User Widgets and HUD controls.

The HUD Controller can override reticle visibility with these choices:

  • Do Not Override
  • Always Show Reticles
  • Only Show Pickaxe Reticle
  • Only Show Weapon Reticles
  • Never Show Reticles

This is an island-development feature. It does not give a player a custom crosshair in Battle Royale, Ranked, or another creator’s island.

What does not work

  • There is no current native Fortnite setting for crosshair color, size, shape, or thickness.
  • Game UI does not contain a custom-crosshair editor; its documented reticle control is a visibility toggle.
  • No current Epic-documented console command or configuration-file edit changes the reticle design.
  • Crosshair X and similar tools are not officially approved by Epic.
