You can’t model custom mesh geometry directly in Roblox Studio. Create it in a 3D program such as Blender or Maya, export it as a supported file, then import it into Studio as a MeshPart. For basic shapes, Studio’s built-in parts and solid modeling tools may be enough.
Choose between Studio parts and a custom mesh
Use Studio’s native parts and solid modeling tools for simple shapes and combinations of basic geometry. Make a custom mesh in an external modeling application when you need a shape or level of detail that those tools cannot conveniently produce. Roblox explains that meshes must be created in a third-party modeling application and imported as MeshPart objects: Roblox Creator Hub: Meshes.
Create and prepare the model outside Studio
Roblox’s guides use Blender and Maya as examples. Blender is free and open source, and Roblox provides a Blender workflow guide: Roblox Creator Hub: Blender. Build the geometry there, and prepare any UV mapping there as well—Studio does not create UV maps for you.
Set scale and orientation before export
Coordinate conventions and units can make a model arrive at the wrong size or rotated. Blender uses Z as its vertical axis by default, while Studio uses Y; Blender defaults to metric units, whereas Studio uses studs. Roblox’s Blender guide recommends setting World Forward to Front, World Up to Top, and Scale Unit to Stud. If you want Blender’s object position preserved, the guide also describes enabling “Insert Using Scene Position.” Importer controls can change, so check the current preview and settings rather than relying on the model’s appearance in Blender alone.

Choose an export format
Studio’s Importer supports FBX, OBJ, and glTF. FBX and glTF can carry multiple mesh objects and hierarchies, as well as additional data such as textures and rigging, skinning, or animation. Choose a format and export setup that suit the asset you are bringing in. See Roblox Creator Hub: 3D Importer for supported formats and options.
Import the mesh into Roblox Studio
- In Studio, choose File > Import or click the Import button.
- Select the exported FBX, OBJ, or glTF file.
- Review the preview, warnings, and transform settings. Adjust them if the scale, orientation, grouping, or other options do not match your intent.
- Choose whether to group multiple objects as a Model or merge meshes into one
MeshPart, as appropriate. Other options include inverting negative faces, choosing a creator, and uploading to Roblox or adding the object to the current Workspace. - Import the asset, then inspect the resulting object in Studio.
The Importer can add the asset to Workspace and, if enabled, to your creator inventory in Toolbox or Asset Manager. Preview the options before importing; defaults can vary by asset and use case.

Check the MeshPart and its surface
After import, position and anchor the MeshPart as needed, then check its rendering and collision settings, including level of detail and collision fidelity. Geometry and surface appearance are separate: a mesh defines shape, while an image texture adds color and surface detail.
For a texture, Roblox supports MeshPart.TextureID. For PBR materials, you can use a SurfaceAppearance child or a MaterialVariant. Prepare the UV map in your modeling program so the texture maps correctly onto the mesh. Roblox’s mesh documentation covers these options: Meshes.

Use the right import route for advanced assets
The Importer supports mesh assets with rigging, skinning, and animation data, as well as avatar components. Roblox cautions that Asset Manager bulk import does not support meshes with rigging, skinning, and animation data, accessories, or characters with facial animations. For those assets, use the Importer rather than Asset Manager bulk import.
