Build a PRD generator in OpenClaw as a workspace skill: a directory under skills/ whose entry point is a SKILL.md file. The file’s YAML frontmatter defines the skill name and description; its markdown instructions tell the agent how to turn an idea such as “write a PRD for the new checkout flow” into a consistent product requirements document.

No official OpenClaw PRD generator was identified. You can either install a community skill after reviewing its instructions or write a small, controlled skill of your own. The second route gives you control over the questions asked, required sections, prioritisation scheme, and company template.

What an OpenClaw PRD generator actually is

An OpenClaw PRD generator is not a separate application, web service, or executable. It is an OpenClaw skill: a folder containing a SKILL.md file with YAML frontmatter followed by markdown instructions. When the skill is invoked, the agent follows those instructions to produce a product requirements document.

The distinction matters because the quality of the generator comes from its instruction contract. A vague prompt may produce a plausible-looking document that omits decisions, measurable outcomes, or testable acceptance criteria. A well-designed skill behaves more like a requirements workflow: it checks for missing information, asks focused questions, applies a fixed section order, and labels priorities consistently.

Choose between a community skill and a custom one

Install an existing community skill

Several third-party PRD skills are listed in the OpenClaw ecosystem. prd-skill on ClawHub converts natural-language app ideas into markdown PRDs with P0, P1, and P2 features. Its documented installation command is:

openclaw skills install prd-skill

Other examples include prd-writer in HelloPM examples, bjesuiter’s prd, a Smithery prd listing, and the iOS-focused ios-prd-generator. Their structures differ: some emphasize MoSCoW prioritisation, some use task lists, some add risk analysis, and the iOS-focused option follows a mobile-product structure from vision and personas through timeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Community skill versions, installation stability, and security review were not established. A skill runs instructions inside your agent, so read its SKILL.md and any referenced files before enabling it. Treat an unfamiliar skill as executable guidance, not as a trusted black box.

Write your own skill

A custom skill is preferable when your team has a house PRD format, needs a predictable approval workflow, or wants to limit what the agent can infer. You can encode required questions, the exact headings your team uses, a priority model, and a template without depending on a community package.

Prerequisites and file layout

Use a workspace that OpenClaw can discover, then create a skills/ directory if it does not already exist. Skills may be nested in subfolders for organisation, but each skill needs its own directory and entry-point file.

A minimal layout is:

your-workspace/
└── skills/
    └── prd-writer/
        └── SKILL.md

You can add a company template or supporting material without changing the entry point:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
your-workspace/
└── skills/
    └── prd-writer/
        ├── SKILL.md
        └── templates/
            └── company-prd.md

Reference a template from the instructions only when it is genuinely needed. Keeping the first version small makes it easier to see whether the agent is following the workflow or merely copying a document.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

Step 1: Create valid frontmatter

The skill name and description are required. The name field uses lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens. The description is a single line shorter than 160 characters. If name is omitted, OpenClaw can fall back to the directory name, but declaring it explicitly avoids ambiguity.

Start skills/prd-writer/SKILL.md with:

---
name: prd-writer
description: Turn product ideas into structured PRDs with measurable goals, user stories, priorities, and acceptance criteria.
user-invocable: true
---

user-invocable: true makes the skill available as a slash command. The documented default is true, so you may omit the key when that default is acceptable; declaring it makes the intended behaviour clear to future maintainers.

If you want a skill to run only when explicitly called and not appear in the model’s normal prompt, add:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
disable-model-invocation: true

That setting does not remove the skill from slash-command use. It keeps the instructions out of ordinary model invocation until a user deliberately runs the skill.

Step 2: Define the generator’s behaviour

The markdown body is the operating procedure. Write it as instructions to the agent, not as an explanation for a human reader. Specify the role, the questions to ask, the output order, and what to do when evidence is missing.

A robust generator should be told to:

  • Act as a product manager and requirements analyst.
  • Ask clarifying questions when the request is vague instead of inventing business decisions.
  • Separate confirmed facts, assumptions, open questions, and decisions needed from stakeholders.
  • Use a fixed heading order so two PRDs can be compared.
  • Make success criteria measurable, normally three to five criteria when enough information is available.
  • Write user stories in a consistent format and attach testable acceptance criteria.
  • Prioritise features with P0/P1/P2 or MoSCoW, but use one scheme consistently within a document.
  • Include technical requirements, dependencies, risks, and unresolved questions.
  • Use concise markdown and avoid claiming that a requirement is approved unless the user supplied that decision.

Step 3: Choose a PRD section contract

Before writing the prompt, decide what every generated PRD must contain. The following order covers the common structure used by the PRD skills identified in the OpenClaw ecosystem while remaining adaptable to a game, app, or internal tool.

  1. Document control: title, owner, status, date, and version if the user supplies them.
  2. Executive summary: the product change and the user or business problem it addresses.
  3. Problem statement: the observable problem, affected users, and evidence supplied by the requester.
  4. Goals and non-goals: the intended outcomes and explicit exclusions.
  5. Success metrics: three to five measurable criteria where the input supports them; mark unknown baselines as open questions rather than guessing.
  6. Users and personas: the relevant audience, context, and constraints.
  7. User stories: one story per meaningful outcome.
  8. Acceptance criteria: Given/When/Then statements or another testable format.
  9. Prioritised features: P0/P1/P2 or MoSCoW labels with a short rationale.
  10. Functional requirements: behaviours, states, permissions, and error handling.
  11. Technical requirements: integrations, data, performance, security, accessibility, platforms, and operational needs that are known.
  12. Dependencies and risks: external systems, sequencing constraints, assumptions, and mitigations.
  13. Release plan: milestones or rollout notes only when the requester provides enough information.
  14. Open questions and decisions: unresolved items that block implementation or approval.

Do not force every item into a fabricated answer. For example, if no baseline conversion rate is supplied, the generator should write that the baseline is unknown and ask who owns the measurement. A clearly labelled unknown is more useful than a made-up number.

Step 4: Add a clarification gate

Most PRD failures start with an underspecified request. Tell the skill to inspect the input before drafting. It should ask a small batch of high-value questions, then wait for answers, rather than producing a long document built on guesses.

Useful questions include:

  • Who is the primary user, and what situation prompts them to use the feature?
  • What problem is being solved, and what evidence shows that it matters?
  • What is explicitly out of scope for this release?
  • Which platforms, regions, account types, or game modes are included?
  • What outcome will determine whether the work succeeded?
  • Are there existing product, legal, accessibility, or technical constraints?
  • Who approves the PRD and who owns each unresolved decision?

Instruct the agent to proceed when the user answers enough questions, while carrying the remaining gaps into an “Open questions” section. It should not repeatedly ask for information that is already present in the conversation.

Step 5: Define priority and acceptance rules

Prioritisation

P0/P1/P2 is straightforward for implementation planning: P0 is required for the release to work, P1 is important but can follow, and P2 is desirable or exploratory. MoSCoW expresses a similar decision as Must, Should, Could, and Won’t for this release. Choose one model in the skill and explain it briefly so the labels are not interpreted differently by different readers.

Require a reason beside each priority. “P0” alone does not explain whether a feature is legally required, blocks the core user journey, or was simply requested first.

Acceptance criteria

Tell the generator to make criteria observable and testable. A useful pattern is:

Given [starting context]
When [user action or system event]
Then [observable result]

For a checkout-flow example, a criterion might state that a player with a valid payment method sees a confirmation and an order identifier after submitting the purchase. The generator should also cover failure paths, such as a declined payment, duplicate submission, timeout, or loss of connection, when those cases are relevant to the request.

Step 6: Add a company template when needed

If your organisation already has a PRD template, put it in a templates/ subfolder and tell the skill how to use it. The instruction should say which headings are mandatory, which placeholders may be filled, and where to record assumptions. Do not ask the agent to silently rewrite the template’s meaning.

A template reference can be as simple as:

When a file exists at templates/company-prd.md, preserve its heading order and terminology. Fill only information supported by the conversation. Put missing decisions under Open questions and retain any required approval fields.

If the template is optional, say what the generator should do when it is absent. A skill that depends on a missing file can fail before producing any useful output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 7: Assemble a complete SKILL.md

The following example is intentionally explicit. Adapt the wording to your team, but keep the frontmatter rules intact.

---
name: prd-writer
description: Turn product ideas into structured PRDs with measurable goals, user stories, priorities, and acceptance criteria.
user-invocable: true
---

# PRD writer

Act as a product manager and requirements analyst. Convert the user's product idea into a decision-ready product requirements document.

## Workflow

1. Read the request and identify the product, target users, problem, desired outcome, platform, and release context.
2. If a missing detail would change scope, priority, architecture, or success measurement, ask focused clarifying questions before drafting.
3. Do not invent metrics, approvals, baselines, dates, legal requirements, or technical capabilities. Mark unsupported items as assumptions or open questions.
4. After clarification, produce the PRD in the section order below.
5. Use P0, P1, and P2 priorities. Include a one-sentence reason for every priority.
6. Write acceptance criteria as testable Given/When/Then statements, including important failure paths.
7. End with dependencies, risks and mitigations, and open questions with an owner when one is known.

## Required sections

1. Document control
2. Executive summary
3. Problem statement
4. Goals and non-goals
5. Success metrics (three to five measurable criteria when supported)
6. Users and personas
7. User stories
8. Acceptance criteria
9. Prioritised features
10. Functional requirements
11. Technical requirements
12. Dependencies and risks
13. Release plan
14. Open questions and decisions

## Output rules

Use clear markdown headings and tables only when they improve scanning. Distinguish confirmed facts, assumptions, and unresolved decisions. Preserve the user's terminology. If the user asks for a rewrite, update the existing decisions instead of silently changing scope.

This is a starting contract, not a guarantee that every project has enough information for every section. The important behaviour is the distinction between supplied facts and generated structure.

Step 8: Invoke and inspect the skill

After placing the folder in the workspace’s skills/ directory, invoke it using the interface your OpenClaw setup exposes. If you enabled slash invocation, call the skill by its name and provide a concrete request such as:

write a PRD for the new checkout flow

Check the first output against the contract:

  • Did it ask for missing information before making consequential assumptions?
  • Are the headings in the required order?
  • Are success criteria measurable rather than vague aspirations?
  • Does every user story have acceptance criteria?
  • Are priorities explained and used consistently?
  • Are failure paths and non-goals present?
  • Are unknown metrics and unresolved decisions clearly labelled?

Run several different prompts: a complete feature brief, a one-line idea, a request that changes an existing feature, and a request with contradictory constraints. The goal is to expose instruction gaps, not to prove that one polished example works.

Comparison of available PRD skill approaches

Skill or listing Emphasis Scope or installation detail
prd-skill (ClawHub) Natural-language app ideas converted to markdown PRDs with P0/P1/P2 features Install command documented as openclaw skills install prd-skill; it is a community skill
prd-writer (HelloPM examples) Problem statements, success metrics, MoSCoW user stories, Given/When/Then acceptance criteria, clarification questions, and recalled decisions Example implementation rather than an official OpenClaw package
prd (bjesuiter) Structured task lists, user stories, and acceptance criteria Community skill; the listing identifies an MIT licence
prd (Smithery listing) Executive summary, user stories, technical specifications, risk analysis, and three to five measurable success criteria Listing information; package stability and security review were not established
ios-prd-generator iOS-specific flow from vision and personas through timeline Use only when an iOS-oriented structure matches the product

These options are not interchangeable. Select based on the output sections and prioritisation model your team actually uses, then inspect the instructions before enabling any community skill.

Troubleshooting common failures

The skill is not discovered

Confirm that the folder is inside the active workspace’s skills/ directory, that the file is named exactly SKILL.md, and that the YAML frontmatter starts at the top of the file and closes with a second --- line. Check that name contains only lowercase letters, digits, and hyphens.

  • Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
  • Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

The slash command is missing

Ensure user-invocable is true or omitted so the documented default applies. If you set disable-model-invocation: true, the skill should still be explicitly runnable; that setting controls normal model invocation, not deliberate use.

The output invents metrics or dates

Add a stronger prohibition in the workflow and require an “Assumptions” or “Open questions” entry whenever a baseline, target, owner, or deadline is absent. Include an example showing the desired behaviour: “Baseline not provided; confirm analytics owner and measurement window.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The document changes priorities between runs

Define one priority vocabulary and require a rationale for every label. If your team uses MoSCoW, remove P0/P1/P2 language from the instructions; mixing both schemes invites inconsistent interpretation.

The agent skips technical or risk sections

Make those headings mandatory and specify the minimum questions to consider: integrations, data handling, permissions, performance, accessibility, operational monitoring, dependencies, and rollback concerns. Permit “not yet determined” where the requester has no answer, but do not allow the section to disappear.

Security and maintenance considerations

A skill’s markdown is instruction code in practical terms: it shapes what the agent does and what files or context it may be told to use. Review community skills before installation, especially any that reference external files, tools, or data sources. Keep company-sensitive templates in the intended workspace and avoid placing credentials or private tokens in a PRD template.

Version your custom skill with the same care as other workflow documentation. When you change a heading, priority definition, or clarification rule, test an existing sample request again. A small wording change can alter whether the agent asks questions, records assumptions, or treats a feature as mandatory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a custom generator is the better choice

Write your own skill when the PRD must match an internal approval process, when your product spans multiple platforms, when you need a strict distinction between confirmed and proposed requirements, or when a community skill’s scope does not fit. Install a community option when its documented structure already matches your workflow and you are prepared to review and maintain the instructions.

In both cases, the durable design is the same: a discoverable skill directory, valid frontmatter, a clear clarification gate, a fixed output contract, explicit prioritisation, and acceptance criteria that a team can test. OpenClaw supplies the skill mechanism; your SKILL.md supplies the product judgment.
