Creating a stylized game character means building more than an attractive model: the finished asset needs topology, UVs, materials, and—if it will animate—a tested rig that imports correctly into the target engine. Work from design and broad forms toward a clean game mesh, then texture, rig, export, and validate. Choose the engine and character type early, because they shape the requirements at the end of the pipeline.
1. Define the design and target
Start with the character’s silhouette, proportions, large shapes, and visual language. Decide whether you are making a biped, creature, or another rig type, and identify the intended engine and platform before detailed modeling. These choices affect how you build the mesh and what you need to validate at export.
Blender Studio’s stylized-character course frames the work around design, sculpting, and retopology. Treat the design as a guide for the asset’s eventual use, not just as a target for a polished sculpt.
2. Block out forms with the right modeling approach
Establish the large shapes before spending time on small details. You can develop those forms through direct modeling or a sculpt-first workflow; the better choice depends on the design and how much form exploration it needs. Sculpting can make it easier to explore broad forms, but a detailed sculpt is not automatically a suitable game mesh.

Blender Studio describes production work in which artists develop a design through sculpting or loose modeling before retopology. The important handoff is to make a final mesh that supports the asset’s next jobs, rather than assuming the exploratory model will serve every purpose.
3. Retopologize for shading, rigging, and animation
Create clean game topology over or from the developed forms. Retopology is not only about reducing visible polygon count: the mesh must also shade well, accept textures, and deform as intended. Plan edge flow around likely movement, especially at joints, so bending does not produce avoidable pinching or distortion.

Blender Studio’s modeling guidance places production retopology after design development and treats topology as part of a broader asset-creation process. There is no universal polygon budget established here; project limits depend on the engine, platform, and the game’s own performance requirements.
4. Plan UVs with the mesh
UV layout is connected to topology and should be considered alongside it, rather than left as an afterthought. Place seams where they are least disruptive for the model and clothing, minimize texture stretching, and allocate texture detail where it matters. Blender Studio specifically highlights seam placement, stretching, and texel density as considerations in asset creation.

5. Texture and prepare materials for real-time use
Build textures and materials for the intended game rather than copying settings from a film-oriented asset workflow. Blender Studio’s comparison notes that games call for compressed, lighter textures than high-resolution film textures. Match resolution, material setup, and detail to the project’s actual requirements; no single texture size or geometry limit is suitable for every character and platform.
Check the result in the target engine’s lighting and material system. A texture that looks convincing in a modeling application may read differently once imported, so review both the visual style and the practical level of detail in context.

6. Rig and skin the character if it needs animation
If the character will move, create a skeleton, bind the mesh, and test deformation with animation. Refine skinning where joints bend, then check that the mesh and rig behave as intended through the movements the character must perform. Unity’s documentation emphasizes deformation testing, mesh cleanup, and scale checks.
Requirements differ by engine and rig category. For example, Unity’s 2022.3 Humanoid documentation specifies a minimum of 15 bones for that workflow. That is a Unity Humanoid requirement, not a general rule for all characters or engines.

7. Export and validate in the target engine
Export for the engine and workflow you selected, then reimport and inspect the character in the actual project. Unity 2022.3 recommends FBX for models and describes it as a format that can carry mesh, skeleton hierarchy, normals, textures, and animation. Confirm current import settings for your engine version rather than treating Unity’s guidance as universal.
- Import the exported asset into the target project. Check that the mesh, skeleton hierarchy, materials, and any animation are present.
- Verify scale in-engine. Unity’s guidance recommends checking scale against its one-unit cube.
- Inspect deformation with animation. Look for joint distortion, unexpected shading, or skinning problems in motion, not just in a static pose.
- Review the final appearance in context. Confirm that materials and texture detail read as intended under the project’s rendering setup.
Choosing a workflow without overbuilding
The main modeling choice is sculpt-first development versus direct modeling. Sculpting is useful when broad forms need exploration; direct modeling may suit a design whose forms are already clear. Either route still needs a final topology suited to shading, texturing, rigging, and animation. The delivery choice is likewise engine-specific: rig type, platform, format, scale, materials, and animation needs determine what must be checked at import.
Blender Studio’s course overview notes that its course material was created for Blender 2.8, so it is best treated as a conceptual resource rather than a guarantee of current interface labels. Its general modeling guide can inform the production principles, while exact application steps should be checked against the versions in use.
