The reliable sequence
Superflat generation is a first-creation setting. The server reads the world-generation options when it creates a world for a particular name. If that name already has a save, changing the generation option normally leaves the existing terrain untouched.

- Stop the server completely. Use the control panel’s Stop action or the normal server shutdown process. Do not edit a live configuration file while the process is running.
- Back up the current save. Copy the entire
data/Saves/directory, or use your host’s backup function, before changing names or deleting anything. - Open the active server configuration. Most guides identify
data/serverconfig.json; another identifiesvintagestoryserver.jsonin the server directory. Confirm the filename and location in your own installation and server version. - Set the world type to superflat. In a panel, this may be a dropdown labelled Super Flat. In a file, look for the existing property named
WorldTypeand change its value tosuperflat. Do not add a second property if one already exists. - Give the world a new name. A new name guarantees that the server performs a fresh generation pass. This is safer than deleting the existing save and lets you return to the old world later.
- Start the server and watch the startup log. The first start with the new name should create the new world. Join only after startup has completed and the server reports that it is ready.
If you must reuse the old name, stop the server, verify your backup, remove the corresponding contents of data/Saves/, and start again. Deleting saves is irreversible without a usable backup.
What is known, and what varies by server version
Instructions for this task differ because Vintage Story server packages and hosting panels do not expose the configuration in one universal layout. The setting’s name and the file that contains it should be verified against the version actually running your server.

The official World Configuration documentation describes creation-only settings such as climate, world size and polar-to-equator distance. It also identifies /worldconfig as the in-game route for changing applicable settings on an already-created world. The documentation snippet does not establish superflat as a universal official value, so treat that value as version-dependent rather than guaranteed for every server build.
Using a hosting control panel
A control panel is usually the least error-prone method because it writes the JSON for you. Labels vary, but the workflow is consistent.

Choose Stop and wait until the panel shows the process as offline. If the panel offers a graceful shutdown, use it first; force-stopping can leave a save in an incomplete state.
2. Find world-generation settings
Open the server’s configuration or startup-settings page. Look for a world-type selector, a field named WorldType, or an advanced world-configuration section. Select Super Flat if that exact option is offered. If the panel exposes only free-form text, enter the value expected by that panel’s documentation and avoid changing unrelated fields.

3. Change the world name
Set a distinct name such as flat-build-01. The exact spelling is not important; uniqueness is. A new name prevents the server from associating the request with an existing save and gives you an easy rollback path.
4. Save, then start
Save the panel form before pressing Start. During the first startup, look for a message indicating that a new world is being generated. If the panel has a live console, keep it open until generation and initialization finish.

5. Verify in game
Connect after the server is ready and inspect the spawn area. Confirm that the terrain is flat and that the world name shown by the server matches the new name. If you see your old landscape, stop immediately and troubleshoot instead of building on the wrong save.
Editing configuration files safely
File-based setup is useful on a self-hosted or unmanaged server, but a malformed JSON file can prevent startup. Keep an untouched backup of the configuration before editing.

Identify the file the process uses
Start with data/serverconfig.json, which is the filename used by most of the available server guides. If it is absent, inspect the server’s main directory for vintagestoryserver.json or a version-specific configuration file. The presence of a similarly named file does not prove that it is active; use the server’s launch documentation or startup output to confirm.
Find the existing world-type property
Open the file in a JSON-aware editor and search for WorldType. Published examples disagree about whether it is nested under WorldConfiguration, under worldConfig, or at the top level. That disagreement is why copying a path from another version is risky. Preserve the surrounding structure and edit the value where the property already appears.

Preserve valid JSON
- Keep property names and string values in double quotes.
- Do not leave a trailing comma after the last property in an object.
- Do not create duplicate
WorldTypeentries. - Save the file as plain text without changing its extension.
- Reopen the file in the editor to check that it still parses before starting the server.
Because the accepted world-type value is not confirmed for every release, retain the original file until you have successfully started and verified the new world. If the server rejects the value, restore the backup and use the version-specific documentation or panel options supplied with your installation.
Why a new name is preferable to deleting a save
The server associates generated terrain with a world name and its save directory. Changing a generation option does not retroactively rebuild chunks that already exist. A new name therefore provides three benefits:

- It protects the old world. The original save remains available for rollback.
- It makes the test unambiguous. A successful startup must create a separate world rather than silently loading old terrain.
- It supports side-by-side evaluation. You can compare the new flat map with the original without repeatedly deleting and restoring files.
Use deletion only when you specifically need the original name. Stop the server, create and verify a backup outside the live save directory, then remove the relevant contents of data/Saves/. Do not delete the entire server directory, and do not assume that a panel’s “reset world” action preserves a recoverable copy unless it explicitly says so.
Choosing a play style for a flat build world
One hosting guide recommends a creative-building play style because a superflat map has no natural resources in the usual survival sense. That recommendation is about convenience, not a requirement for generation. If your objective is construction, creative mode avoids turning the absence of resource generation into an early progression problem. If you want a challenge, retain a survival-oriented style and plan to provide resources through whatever administrative or gameplay tools your server version supports.
Set the play style during the same pre-generation configuration pass when your panel or version exposes it. Treat it as separate from the world-type setting: changing play style later does not regenerate terrain, and changing terrain settings does not automatically change how existing players are configured.

/worldconfig is the in-game command route for world settings that the game permits you to change after creation. The official documentation distinguishes those mutable settings from creation-only options. Superflat generation belongs to the creation step in the available server instructions, so using /worldconfig should not be treated as a way to flatten an already-generated landscape.

If you need a flat map, create a new world as described above. Use /worldconfig only for settings that your running version explicitly lists as changeable, and make administrative changes while you understand who can execute the command and how they affect connected players.

The server starts, but the terrain is not flat
- Confirm that you changed the active configuration file, not a template or an unused copy.
- Check that the world name is genuinely new. If it is unchanged, the server may be loading the existing save.
- Verify that the old save was removed only if you intended to reuse the name and that the backup was made first.
- Search the file for every
WorldTypeentry and remove accidental duplicates, following the structure generated by your server version. - Stop and start again after saving the configuration; editing while the process is running may be overwritten on shutdown.
The server refuses to start after the edit
- Restore the original configuration backup to get the server online.
- Validate the JSON for missing quotes, braces or commas.
- Check whether your release accepts the literal
superflat. If the panel offers a Super Flat selector, use that instead of hand-editing. - Review the startup log for the filename and section that the process actually reads, then make one change at a time.
The panel has no Super Flat option
Use the panel’s file manager to locate the active configuration and search for WorldType. If neither a selector nor an existing property is present, do not invent a new hierarchy from an unrelated guide. Consult the documentation for the exact Vintage Story server version or ask the host which world-type values it supports. Keep the current save untouched while testing.
The world generates, but players report missing resources
This is consistent with the reason one guide recommends creative building for superflat maps. Decide whether the server’s purpose is construction or survival, then set an appropriate play style and resource plan for that purpose. Do not assume that changing the play style will add resources to terrain that has already been generated.
Backup and rollback checklist
- Stop the server and wait for an offline state.
- Copy
data/Saves/to storage outside the server’s live directory. - Record the old world name and the original configuration file.
- Make the new world under a distinct name whenever possible.
- Keep the backup until you have joined the new map, checked terrain, and confirmed that important player data is available as expected.
- To roll back, stop the server, restore the original configuration and save directory, and start with the original world name.
A rollback is simplest when the original save and configuration are preserved as a matched pair. Avoid mixing a newly generated world’s configuration with an older save unless you know exactly which settings are safe to combine.
Pre-start and post-start checklists
Before starting
- The server process is stopped.
- A verified copy of
data/Saves/exists. - You identified the configuration file loaded by this server version.
- The existing
WorldTypeentry, or the panel’s Super Flat selector, is set for the new generation. - The world name is new, or you deliberately removed the old save after backing it up.
- Any creative-building play-style choice is saved with the configuration.
After starting
- The startup log shows generation of the intended world rather than loading the previous one.
- The server reaches its ready state without configuration errors.
- The spawn area has the expected flat terrain.
- The world name and player permissions are correct.
- The old backup remains available until verification is complete.
Bottom line
Use the stop-edit-new-name-start workflow. Treat superflat as a value used by current hosting instructions but verify it against your server release, because the official documentation snippet does not establish one universal key path or filename. Never expect a generation setting to remodel an existing save, and never delete data/Saves/ without a tested backup.
