How to Fix Ticking Entity Crashes on a Minecraft Server

A ticking-entity crash usually points to one damaged mob, block entity, or modded object. This guide shows how to read the report, protect your world, choose between backup restoration, targeted commands, NBT editing, and mod-specific cleanup, and avoid making the damage worse.

A ticking-entity crash is usually caused by one damaged mob, block entity, or modded object being processed when its chunk ticks. Stop the server, make a copy of the world, read the crash report for the exact entity and coordinates, then choose the least destructive remedy: restore a clean backup, remove the entity while its chunk is loaded, or edit/reset the affected chunk offline. Updating or removing the mod may prevent another crash, but it does not remove damage already saved in the world.

What “ticking entity” means

In Minecraft Java Edition, the server repeatedly updates (“ticks”) entities such as mobs, minecarts, dropped items, and modded creatures. It also ticks block entities, including chests, furnaces, machines, and other blocks that store data. If one object contains invalid data, triggers a mod bug, or conflicts with the server’s software versions, the tick can throw an exception and stop the server.

The crash report normally identifies the object that failed. Look for a section headed Entity being ticked. It commonly includes:

  • the entity type or mod identifier;
  • a unique entity ID;
  • the dimension or world;
  • exact X, Y, and Z coordinates; and
  • a data or NBT summary that can reveal the responsible mod.

Block entity being ticked means the problem is a block entity rather than a mobile creature. A chest, furnace, machine, spawner, or other tile-like object cannot be removed with a normal mob-kill command; it generally requires a backup restore, mod-specific cleanup, or offline region editing.

Some reports only say Ticking world and provide no usable coordinates. Because the culprit cannot be targeted reliably in that case, restoring a recent clean backup is the safest first choice.

Protect the world before changing anything

Every removal method changes saved world data. A mistaken command, chunk reset, or NBT edit can delete legitimate builds or make the world harder to recover. Before attempting a fix:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop the server normally. If it is trapped in a crash loop, terminate it from the control panel or console and wait until the process is fully stopped.
  2. Copy the entire world folder to a separate location. Keep the original untouched and work on a duplicate when using an editor.
  3. Copy the server’s crash reports and latest log as well. They preserve the coordinates, stack trace, and mod information you may need if the first fix fails.
  4. Record the Minecraft version, loader (Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric), Java version, mod list, and mod versions before changing them.

Do not delete the only copy of the world in an attempt to make the server boot. A backup is the recovery point if a cleanup removes the wrong object.

Read the crash report precisely

Find the identifying section

Open the newest file in the server’s crash-reports folder and search for Entity being ticked or Block entity being ticked. Copy the complete entity type, dimension, coordinates, and any mod name shown in that section. The coordinate is only useful if you also note the dimension; identical X, Y, and Z values can exist in the Overworld, Nether, and End.

Distinguish a mob from a block entity

An entry such as a namespaced creature ID points toward a mob or other moving entity. A block position, block ID, or machine name points toward a block entity. Treat a block-entity report differently: a targeted /kill command will not remove a chest, furnace, or machine.

Use the stack trace as a clue, not proof

Mod names in the stack trace can identify the code that was executing when the crash occurred. The named mod may be the cause, the object’s owner, or only the code that noticed corrupted data. Confirm the entity type and saved object before removing a mod or deleting a chunk.

Why these crashes happen

Hosting guides report that ticking crashes are most common on larger modded servers and on mismatched software stacks. Typical triggers include:

  • a mod built for a different Minecraft version;
  • an incompatible Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric loader version;
  • two mods changing the same entity or block-entity data;
  • an update that leaves old NBT data in an existing world;
  • an interrupted save or damaged region data; or
  • a Java version that the particular Minecraft or loader build does not support.

Vanilla servers can crash this way too, but the guides describe the problem as less common there. Updating the offending mod can fix the code path that caused the crash; it does not automatically repair an already corrupted entity stored in the world.

Choose a recovery method

Method Speed Residual data-loss risk Backup needed Works with an unloaded chunk? Console access Mod-specific?
Restore a recent clean backup Slowest if a large backup must be copied Lowest Yes, a usable backup Yes No No
Targeted /kill at the reported coordinates Fast Low when the selector is exact Yes No; the chunk must load Yes No
NBT or region editing (for example, NBTExplorer or MCASelector) Moderate Higher; an incorrect edit can remove a whole chunk’s data Yes Yes No, but offline file access is required No
Forge/NeoForge removal flag Automatic after configuration Depends on the flag and mod Yes Often, during startup Usually Yes; only mods that implement the flag
CoFH Core wildcard removal command Fast in supported modpacks High if the wildcard matches intended mobs Yes Yes, according to hosting-guide descriptions Yes Yes; requires CoFH Core support
Update or remove the offending mod Moderate Does not itself remove stored damage Yes Not applicable Usually Yes

Step-by-step recovery procedure

1. Stop, copy, and identify

Complete the backup steps first, then record the report’s entity type, world, and coordinates. If the server crashes before it finishes loading, do not repeatedly restart it on the only copy; each attempt can rewrite data or trigger the same failing tick.

2. Audit every software version

Compare the Minecraft version, loader build, Java runtime, and every recently changed mod with the versions supported by the modpack. Pay particular attention to a mod added or updated immediately before the first crash. If a compatible release exists, install it on the copied server and keep the original backup available. Do not assume that the newest release is compatible with an older world or loader.

3. Restore a recent clean backup when available

A backup made before the entity appeared is the most reliable fix because it removes the bad saved state instead of trying to identify every damaged field. Restore the world, then reinstall the same compatible mod versions that were present when that backup was made. Avoid reintroducing the action that created the entity until the responsible mod has been updated or configured correctly.

If your backup system stores multiple snapshots, choose the newest one from before the first crash, not merely the newest archive. Check that the restored world opens on a copy before replacing the live world.

4. Use a targeted kill only when the chunk can load

This method is appropriate for a mobile entity when the server stays online long enough to accept a command and the reported chunk can be loaded safely. Teleport an operator to the dimension and coordinates if necessary, then use a selector restricted to the reported type and a very small radius. A Java selector follows this pattern:

/kill @e[type=<entity_id>,x=<X>,y=<Y>,z=<Z>,distance=..2,limit=1]

Replace the values with the exact names and coordinates from the report. Verify the type before pressing Enter; a broad selector or wildcard can kill pets, villagers, named mobs, or quest entities nearby. The command cannot remove a block entity. If the server crashes as soon as the chunk loads, stop trying this route and use an offline method.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Edit an unloaded chunk on a backup copy

When the chunk cannot load, shut the server down and open the duplicate world with an NBT or region editor such as NBTExplorer or MCASelector. Locate the dimension and region containing the reported coordinates, inspect the chunk’s entity or block-entity list, and remove only the object whose type and position match the crash report.

Save the edited copy under a new name and test it before replacing the live world. If you cannot confidently identify the entry, reset the entire affected chunk only as a last resort; that can erase terrain, containers, machines, and player construction in the chunk. A region editor’s chunk reset is substantially more destructive than deleting one confirmed entity.

6. Use a Forge or NeoForge removal setting only temporarily

Some Forge-based setups and mods provide a configuration flag that removes problematic entities during startup. The exact flag name and location vary by version and by mod. One guide places a Forge 1.13-and-newer server configuration file, forge-server.toml, in the world’s serverconfig folder, but this path is not universal across current Forge or NeoForge builds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the configuration comments for your exact loader and mod, enable only the documented removal option, start the server once, and confirm that the identified object is gone. Revert the temporary setting immediately after a successful boot. Leaving an automatic-removal flag enabled can silently delete future entities that are valid but trigger the same broad rule.

7. Treat CoFH Core wildcard removal as a last-resort modpack tool

Modpacks that include CoFH Core may expose a removal command capable of targeting entities in unloaded chunks. Use the command syntax documented for the installed CoFH Core version and restrict it to the exact entity ID whenever possible. A wildcard can match every entity of a class, including mobs you intended to keep. Make a fresh copy before running it and inspect the world afterward.

8. Retest on an isolated copy

Start the repaired copy with the same Java, loader, and mod versions you plan to use in production. Let the affected dimension load, visit the area if it is safe, and review the new log for another ticking exception. If the crash returns, stop the server and return to the untouched backup rather than stacking several uncertain edits.

Special cases and failure branches

The report names a block entity

Do not issue a mob-kill command. Identify the block position and owning mod, then choose a backup restore, a precise offline NBT deletion, or the mod’s documented cleanup option. Removing the mod alone can leave the invalid block entity in the region and cause the same crash when the chunk is loaded again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The server crashes before the world appears

Because no command can run reliably, begin with a pre-crash backup. If none exists, work only on a copy with a region editor and use the coordinates from the report. If the report has no coordinates, a blind chunk reset is risky; preserving the world and obtaining loader- or mod-specific advice is safer than deleting random regions.

The crash returns after an update

An update may stop the original bug while leaving incompatible NBT from the previous version. Restore the backup or remove the stored entity first, then retest with the updated mod. Keep the loader and Java versions within the mod’s supported range; changing several major components at once makes the cause harder to isolate.

An old guide recommends a Paper setting

Older instructions mention a Paper option called remove-corrupt-tile-entities. Current-build status is not established here, and third-party issue reports say the option was removed in builds after 241. Do not assume the setting exists or works on a current server. Check the configuration generated by your exact Paper build; if the option is absent, use a backup, targeted cleanup, or region editor instead.

Preventing another ticking crash

  • Keep a rotating set of world backups and test that at least one can actually be restored.
  • Record the Minecraft, loader, Java, and mod versions for each server update.
  • Update one mod or loader component at a time on a staging copy, then load previously generated chunks before updating the live world.
  • Remove temporary cleanup flags after they have done their job.
  • Keep commands narrowly scoped; never use a wildcard removal command when the crash report supplies a specific ID.
  • When a mod is removed, clean its stored entities or blocks first if the mod’s documentation requires it.
  • Preserve crash reports and logs so a recurring object can be traced to the same dimension and coordinates.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Is there a clean backup from before the first crash? Restore it first.
  2. Does the report provide an entity type and coordinates? If not, avoid blind commands and prefer a backup.
  3. Is it a mobile entity, not a block entity? Only then consider a narrowly targeted /kill.
  4. Can the affected chunk load without an immediate crash? If no, use offline region or NBT work on a duplicate.
  5. Did a mod, loader, Java runtime, or Minecraft version change recently? Align the stack before testing.
  6. Did you use a temporary flag or wildcard command? Revert the flag and verify that unrelated entities remain.

Bottom line

The crash report is your map: the “Entity being ticked” or “Block entity being ticked” entry identifies what to remove and where it is stored. A recent backup is the lowest-risk solution. If no suitable backup exists, update the incompatible software, then remove the confirmed entity with a tightly scoped command or an offline edit, always working from a copy and treating chunk resets and wildcard commands as last resorts.
