The reliable pattern is simple: run OpenClaw on infrastructure that stays online, connect one private messaging channel, define the coach in SOUL.md, record your goals in USER.md, schedule restrained check-ins, and test the complete reminder-and-reply loop before trusting it with daily habits. Start with three habits, not twenty.
Antihost offers VPS plans with one-click OpenClaw, NVMe storage and a 14-day free trial.
This guide uses Telegram as the example channel and separates current OpenClaw behavior from older community instructions. File names such as SOUL.md, USER.md, and streaks.json are used by community setups, but their exact schemas are not established in the official documentation. Confirm the behavior against the version you have installed.

An accountability coach is a scheduled conversational loop, not a magic motivation engine. At a chosen time, OpenClaw wakes, checks the instructions and state available to it, sends a short prompt through your private channel, records your answer, and uses that answer to decide what happens next. The useful state is small: the habits you selected, the day’s status, a streak or history record, and rules for when the agent should remind you, ask a follow-up question, or stop.
OpenClaw must be running when a scheduled wake occurs. A laptop that sleeps, loses its network, or is closed will miss production check-ins; use a laptop only while testing. For daily use, choose an always-on VPS or a managed OpenClaw service. Keep the first deployment deliberately narrow: one channel, three habits, one state file, and explicit approval rules.

Choose the deployment before writing prompts
| Option | Always-on behavior | Maintenance trade-off | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Laptop or desktop | Stops when the machine sleeps, shuts down, or loses connectivity | Easy to experiment with, but unreliable for unattended reminders | Initial testing only |
| Self-managed VPS | Designed to run continuously when configured correctly | You maintain the operating system, OpenClaw process, updates, backups, and secrets | People who want control over the runtime |
| Managed OpenClaw hosting | Provider maintains an always-on OpenClaw environment | Less server maintenance, with provider-specific limits and controls to review | People who want production uptime without administering a VPS |
A community estimate puts a simple Telegram-based deployment at roughly $10–$50 per month, depending on hosting, AI usage, and the channel. The estimate has no publication year and is not a quoted plan price, so treat it as a planning range rather than a bill you can expect.
Define a small, measurable coaching contract
Write the contract before you write the personality. A good first version answers five questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Which three to five actions count as success today?
- At what local times may the coach contact you?
- What counts as “done,” “skipped,” and “deferred”?
- How many reminders are acceptable before the coach stops?
- What must the coach ask for approval before doing?
Examples of concrete habits include a morning workout, reading a specified number of pages, drinking a target amount of water, or avoiding social media before noon. Keep each habit observable. “Work on my health” cannot be recorded consistently; “walk for 20 minutes” can.
Use a weekly review rather than increasing message frequency. The getopenclaw setup guidance recommends one private channel, three habits, and clear approval rules before adding integrations. It also warns against connecting many channels, putting tokens in prompt files, tracking about twenty habits, or having the coach nag constantly. See the getopenclaw accountability-coach setup guide for that minimalist approach.
Step 1: Install OpenClaw on an always-on machine
- Prepare the VPS or managed environment and verify that it remains online when your personal computer is off.
- Install OpenClaw using the current instructions for your operating system and release.
- Start the gateway or service using the command and process manager recommended by the version you installed.
- Send a local test message or run a manual wake before connecting a real channel.
- Record the installed version. Scheduling and workspace behavior have changed, so version information is part of your troubleshooting notes.
Do not assume that a process running in one terminal will survive a logout or a reboot. Confirm persistence with a test: close your local terminal, wait through a scheduled interval, and check whether the gateway still responds. If you use a managed service, learn where its logs, restart controls, backups, and secret settings live before you depend on it.

Step 2: Connect one private Telegram channel
Telegram is a practical first channel because it supports direct, private conversations, but the exact connection screens and commands were not established in the available documentation. Follow the current channel instructions for your installed OpenClaw release rather than copying an old command from a blog.
- Create or select a private Telegram conversation that only you can access.
- Connect that channel through OpenClaw’s current channel configuration.
- Send a manual message in both directions: OpenClaw to Telegram and Telegram back to OpenClaw.
- Verify that the agent can distinguish your account from an unknown sender.
- Store the bot token in the runtime’s secret configuration, never in
SOUL.md,USER.md, a task note, or a prompt pasted into chat.
Keep this channel private while you test. Adding email, group chats, calendars, or several social channels increases the number of permissions and failure points without improving the first habit loop.
Step 3: Write the coach persona in SOUL.md
The official personal-assistant setup identifies SOUL.md as a place to tune persona and instructions. Treat it as policy, not as a motivational essay. State the coach’s role, tone, boundaries, response format, and escalation rules in short, testable sentences.
A useful persona specifies that the coach should:
- Ask one clear question at a time.
- Prefer a short check-in over a lecture.
- Accept “skip” or “defer” as explicit states instead of inventing success.
- Never shame, threaten, diagnose, or claim that a message was sent when it was not.
- Ask before changing a goal, contacting another person, or taking an external action.
- End a completed check-in with the next agreed action and time.
Keep the file human-readable and under source control or another private backup. Since the official documentation does not publish a complete accountability-coach schema, do not assume that a particular heading, YAML key, or markdown table is mandatory. The safe requirement is that the instructions are available to the runtime in the way your installed version documents.
Step 4: Put goals and preferences in USER.md
Community workspace guides describe USER.md as a place for facts and preferences about the user. That convention is not confirmed by the official setup page, so verify that your version loads the file before relying on it.

Record only information that improves a check-in:
- Your time zone and the hours during which messages are welcome.
- The exact definition of each habit and its minimum acceptable version.
- Known constraints, such as work shifts, travel, injuries, or quiet hours.
- Your preferred tone and the maximum number of reminders.
- What the coach must ask before changing a target.
Avoid sensitive details that the coach does not need. A private channel is not the same as a medical or financial record. Review the file whenever your schedule changes, and remove stale preferences instead of letting the agent infer around them.
Step 5: Represent streaks without assuming an official file format
A community tutorial uses a file named streaks.json for habit history, but no official source found for this guide confirms that file name or a JSON schema. Use it only if your installed version or your own integration explicitly supports it. Otherwise, use the state mechanism documented for your deployment.
Whatever storage you choose, each record needs an unambiguous date, habit identifier, status, and optional note. Define whether a deferred day preserves a streak, whether a missed day resets it, and how corrections are made. Store dates in one declared time zone; a midnight boundary interpreted differently by the server and Telegram can create duplicate or missing days.
Do not let the model silently rewrite history. A robust approval rule is: the coach may propose a correction, but you must confirm it before the stored status changes. Keep a backup or export so a prompt change cannot erase your record.
Step 6: Schedule check-ins with the current heartbeat and cron model
OpenClaw has two scheduling concepts that are easy to confuse. The official heartbeat documentation says heartbeats run at a fixed interval in the main session, while cron is intended for exact times. Use heartbeat for a periodic “is anything due?” check; use cron when a morning message must arrive at a particular clock time.

Heartbeat configuration
The documented interval setting is agents.defaults.heartbeat.every. The default is 30 minutes. Setting it to 0m disables recurring heartbeats. The interval is not a promise that a user-visible message will be sent every 30 minutes; your instructions still need to decide whether anything is due and whether a message is warranted.
Cron prerequisites
Scheduled heartbeats require cron to be enabled. If cron.enabled is false, or if the environment variable OPENCLAW_SKIP_CRON=1 is set, the gateway logs a warning and runs no scheduled heartbeats. Manual and event-driven wakes can still work, which can make a broken schedule look healthy during interactive testing.
The HEARTBEAT.md conflict
Older material describes HEARTBEAT.md as a checklist read on every heartbeat. The current official heartbeat page says runtime instructions come from database scratch and that the runtime does not read HEARTBEAT.md. Running openclaw doctor --fix moves a legacy workspace file into that scratch store and archives the original.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
That difference is version-sensitive. Before you put a production task in HEARTBEAT.md, read the heartbeat page for your installed release and inspect a real log entry. A third-party runbook shows a tasks: block with per-task intervals, and another guide suggests keeping the file below about 50 lines because it is read on each scheduled run; neither is an official limit or universal schema.
For primary references, consult the current OpenClaw heartbeat documentation, the official personal-assistant setup page, and the OpenClaw GitHub heartbeat document. An older explanation is available at openclawlab; compare its assumptions with the current page. The Fossies mirror notes that OAuth or token-based Anthropic authentication may default to a one-hour interval, but it is a mirror rather than the primary source.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Step 7: Run a complete dry test before going daily
Test the entire loop, not just the chatbot reply:
- Temporarily set a short schedule that your version supports.
- Confirm that cron is enabled and that no
OPENCLAW_SKIP_CRONsetting disables it. - Let the machine pass through a scheduled wake while your laptop is disconnected.
- Verify that the Telegram message arrives in the private chat.
- Reply with each state you intend to use: completed, skipped, deferred, and “not now.”
- Check that the state record changes only as your rules permit.
- Restart the gateway and confirm that the next wake still uses the intended persona, goals, and schedule.
- Inspect logs for duplicate sends, missed wakes, authentication errors, or a disabled scheduler.
Only after this test should you choose the real daily times. A manual chat proves that the model can answer; it does not prove that unattended scheduling, persistence, and state updates work together.
Design check-ins that people will answer
Use a compact daily message
Ask for a reply that can be parsed without a long conversation, for example: “Workout, reading, and water: done, partial, skipped, or defer?” Follow with one optional detail. If every check-in becomes an essay, the coach becomes another task.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Separate reminder, report, and review
- Reminder: one prompt at the agreed time.
- Report: record the status you supplied; do not infer completion from silence.
- Review: once a week, inspect patterns and propose one adjustment for approval.
Set a stopping rule
For example, send one reminder, wait for the response window you selected, then mark the habit unanswered and stop messaging until the next scheduled check-in. The precise interval is your policy; the important property is that silence does not trigger an endless nag loop.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No scheduled messages | Cron is disabled or skipped | Inspect cron.enabled, the OPENCLAW_SKIP_CRON environment variable, and gateway logs. |
| Manual replies work but timed checks do not | Only interactive or event-driven wakes are functioning | Run a real unattended test and verify the heartbeat interval and scheduler process. |
| Instructions in HEARTBEAT.md are ignored | Your release follows the current runtime model, which does not read that file | Read the installed version’s heartbeat documentation; run openclaw doctor --fix only after understanding its migration behavior. |
| Duplicate or missing daily records | Time-zone or midnight-boundary mismatch | Declare one time zone for the server, schedule, and state record, then test around midnight. |
| Coach sends too many messages | No explicit frequency or stopping rule | Reduce the number of scheduled checks and add a maximum-reminder policy to the persona. |
| Streak data changes unexpectedly | Unverified file convention or unrestricted model edits | Confirm the storage format for your release and require approval for corrections. |
| Token appears in a prompt file | Secrets were pasted into workspace text | Rotate the token and move it to the runtime’s documented secret configuration. |
Privacy, safety, and scope boundaries
An accountability coach should handle routine self-management, not replace professional care. Keep medical, legal, and financial decisions outside an informal prompt unless you have deliberately designed and secured that workflow. The coach should ask permission before changing targets, contacting anyone, or invoking an external integration.
Use the least data necessary, restrict the Telegram conversation, protect the VPS or managed account with strong authentication, and keep backups private. Review logs for accidental disclosure. If another person could access the channel, assume that habit history is no longer private and redesign the deployment.
Should you install a prebuilt Coach skill?
A third-party listing describes a skill installed with openclaw skill install coach and aimed at goal-oriented coaching. Its official status and maintenance were not confirmed. If you investigate it, read the listing at the Coach skill page, inspect the package and permissions, and test it in a disposable workspace before granting access to your real channel or state files. A prebuilt skill is optional; the manual setup above makes the behavior auditable.
A practical launch checklist
- OpenClaw runs on a machine that stays online.
- Your installed version and scheduler settings are recorded.
- One private Telegram channel receives and sends test messages.
SOUL.mddefines tone, boundaries, approval, and stopping rules.USER.mdcontains only necessary goals, preferences, time zone, and constraints, and your version actually loads it.- Your streak storage format is supported or explicitly treated as a custom integration.
- There are three to five measurable habits, not an unmanageable catalog.
- Heartbeat versus cron is chosen intentionally.
- Cron is enabled, and
OPENCLAW_SKIP_CRONis not suppressing scheduled wakes. - You completed an unattended end-to-end test and checked the logs.
- Secrets are outside prompt files, and a recovery path exists for lost or corrupted state.
Bottom line
OpenClaw can become a useful accountability coach when you treat it as a small, testable automation system: always-on hosting, one private channel, three to five measurable habits, explicit persona and approval rules, and a scheduler verified on your exact release. The most important caution is scheduling drift: current heartbeat behavior differs from older HEARTBEAT.md guides, so check the official documentation and logs before relying on a file-based checklist.
