After the helicopter crash in Sons of the Forest, your priorities are simple: open the emergency pack, secure a temporary save point, collect basic supplies, and avoid committing to dangerous exploration before your health and equipment are ready. A tarp-and-stick tent gives you somewhere to save and sleep, while the Guide Book, inventory, GPS and Kelvin turn the first day from a scramble into a repeatable routine.

This guide follows that order. It explains what to do immediately, how the survival meters affect one another, which construction and companion tasks matter first, when caves become worthwhile, and how to avoid the severe consequences of dying repeatedly before you have survived a full day.

What to do immediately after the crash

Open the emergency pack

  1. Open the emergency pack as soon as you regain control. The Sons of the Forest Wiki’s Beginner’s Guide specifically reminds new players: “Remember to open your emergency pack after the crash!” Until you do this, you are leaving essential starting equipment unopened.
  2. Search the crash area before walking away. Pick up nearby supplies and anything that can serve as an immediate food, water, light or crafting resource. Early items are more valuable when they are already beside you than when you are trying to recover them later under pressure.
  3. Equip the GPS and a light source. The GPS helps you orient yourself toward important marked locations, while a light prevents a dark first night from forcing a blind retreat.
  4. Do a short visual sweep for sticks, rocks, food and water sources. Do not turn this into a long expedition; the purpose is to collect enough material for shelter and a basic reserve.

The opening minutes are not the time to chase every point on the GPS. Your first objective is a safe place to save, followed by enough supplies to make the next trip deliberate rather than desperate.

Choose a temporary camp, not a permanent home

Place your first camp where you can reach basic resources without crossing a hostile area. A temporary site only needs a practical combination of visibility, nearby sticks and rocks, access to food and water, and a route back to the crash area or another known landmark. You can move later; committing to an elaborate base before understanding the surrounding threats creates work without improving your odds.

Make the first tent

Your first shelter should be a tarp-and-stick tent: one tarp and one stick. Use the Guide Book to place the shelter blueprint, then add the required materials. This small tent is important for two separate reasons: it gives you a place to save, and it gives you a place to sleep. Build it before a long gathering run or any cave trip.

Once the tent is complete, use it immediately so your progress is not tied to the crash site’s starting state. A shelter you can reach quickly is more useful than a larger shelter you have not finished.

Keep the survival meters from collapsing

The first day is governed by five conditions: hunger, thirst, rest, warmth and vitality. Treat them as a connected system rather than five independent bars. Hunger and thirst determine whether you can keep moving; rest affects how long you can work; warmth matters in cold conditions; and vitality sets the ceiling for how much stamina you can use.

Condition What it means in practice First response
Hunger You need a dependable food supply before a long trip or fight. Collect food while gathering other resources and keep an emergency portion in your inventory.
Thirst Water is a route-planning concern, not something to postpone until the meter is critical. Identify a water source near your working area and refill or drink before leaving on a long journey.
Rest Extended activity without sleep makes a dangerous expedition harder to recover from. Return to the tent and sleep when your workday is ending, rather than pushing into darkness.
Warmth Cold limits vitality. Clothing is not equally warm, so equipment choice affects how long you can function in cold conditions. Use warmer clothing when available and shorten exposed trips when conditions are cold.
Vitality Maximum stamina is tied to maximum vitality. A damaged or restricted vitality pool therefore limits how much stamina is available. Heal and recover before treating a difficult fight or cave as routine.

Warmth and vitality are the easy relationship to miss. A cold character is not merely uncomfortable: cold can limit vitality, and available stamina cannot exceed your maximum vitality. If your stamina seems unexpectedly low, check your condition instead of assuming the game has changed your controls.

A practical gathering loop

  1. Start at the tent with a light source, the GPS and enough food and water for a short outing.
  2. Gather sticks and rocks first. They are the materials most likely to determine whether you can extend your shelter, make basic structures or prepare a fire.
  3. Collect food and water while moving through the same area. Avoid making a separate, exposed trip for every category of resource.
  4. Return when rest, warmth or vitality is deteriorating. The goal is a stocked camp and a saved position, not the maximum number of items carried on one run.
  5. Sleep when you have finished the day’s essential work, then begin the next day from a known state.

Use the Guide Book and inventory as your two core interfaces

Guide Book: construction and blueprints

The Guide Book, also referred to as the Survival Book, is where you learn the game’s construction instructions and place building blueprints. Open it whenever you are unsure how a structure is assembled rather than guessing from memory. Start with a tent, then add only the structures that solve an immediate problem: a safer sleeping point, a fire or a defensible work area.

Blueprint placement is a planning step, not a commitment to finish everything immediately. Place a design, gather the listed materials, and leave it if the site becomes unsafe. A half-finished blueprint is less important than keeping your character alive and your last save current.

Inventory: equipment, crafting and quick selection

The inventory is the workspace for equipment, crafting and quick selection. Keep the objects you use repeatedly easy to select so a sudden attack does not become an inventory-management problem. Before leaving camp, check that your light source, food, water and any essential defensive equipment are accessible rather than buried among newly collected items.

Use the GPS to maintain orientation, but do not treat every marker as a mandatory destination. Marked locations are useful when you have a reason to travel and a route home; they are not a substitute for a shelter, supplies and an escape plan.

Turn Kelvin into a safe first-day assistant

Kelvin is most useful when you give him a narrow, concrete job through his notepad while you handle scouting and decisions. He can gather, clear areas, prepare fire or help with shelter-related work. He can also alert you to enemies, but he does not fight them for you.

Assignment When it helps What you still must do
Gather sticks When your first tent or fire is short on basic material. Choose a safe area and check that the worksite is not drawing you into danger.
Gather rocks When construction or a growing camp is consuming your stone supply. Monitor the quantity and move him if the location becomes exposed.
Gather logs When you have selected a site for a larger shelter or defensive structure. Plan the structure first; logs gathered without a design can clutter a temporary camp.
Clear an area When vegetation or debris blocks a planned work area. Decide the boundaries and keep watch while he works.
Build or maintain shelter When you want progress on a camp while you scout nearby. Use the Guide Book to place the blueprint and verify that the site is defensible.
Work on a fire When you need a functioning camp routine while you gather elsewhere. Keep the fire near a practical shelter and return to confirm it is usable.

How to issue commands

  1. Approach Kelvin and open his notepad.
  2. Select the task that matches the material or structure you currently need.
  3. Give him a nearby destination or work area rather than sending him on an ambitious cross-island errand.
  4. Scout, gather or build while he works, checking his position and the surrounding area periodically.
  5. Change the assignment when your immediate shortage is solved. A short task list keeps your camp supplied without making Kelvin’s behavior part of a complicated plan.

Kelvin’s warning about enemies is an early detection tool, not a combat strategy. If he indicates danger, stop treating the area as a quiet worksite: bring him toward shelter, change direction or prepare to disengage yourself.

When to explore the island and its caves

Explore the wider island after you have a tent, a saved position, basic food and water, a light source and enough vitality to retreat. Caves can contain useful items, but they also introduce new enemies and mysteries. Entering one immediately after the crash combines poor equipment, poor visibility and no recovery margin.

A readiness check before a cave trip

  • You have saved at the tent and can return to it without relying on memory alone.
  • Your GPS and light source are available and usable.
  • You have eaten and hydrated rather than starting at the edge of a meter.
  • You are not already cold, exhausted or short on vitality.
  • You know the route back to camp and have a reason to accept the cave’s risk.
  • You are prepared to leave without collecting every item if the encounter becomes dangerous.

Use stealth and control the pace

Stealth is often preferable to an unnecessary fight when your health and equipment are weak. Keep a light ready for navigation, but do not assume that seeing an item is the same as being safe to collect it. Move in short sections, pause to read the space ahead, and preserve a retreat route. The useful outcome of a first cave trip may be learning the approach and returning alive, not clearing the entire cave.

On the surface, use the GPS to connect marked locations into manageable outings. Make one objective the purpose of a trip, then return to the tent to save and reorganize. This rhythm limits the amount of progress lost when an encounter goes badly.

Choose a first base by trade-offs, not by a single “best” location

No universally best first-base location is established. The right site depends on whether you value safety, nearby materials, quick access to marked locations or room for defenses. Evaluate candidate sites with the same five questions before committing to a larger build.

Decision factor Questions to ask Trade-off
Safety How far is the site from hostile patrols, and can you see an approach? A remote site may be safer but can lengthen every supply run.
Resource access Can you reach sticks, logs, rocks, food and water without a long exposed trip? A resource-rich site reduces travel but may be busier or harder to defend.
Save convenience Can you reach the tent quickly after a failed expedition? A central site shortens recovery trips but may expose you to more encounters.
Mobility Does the site connect sensibly to GPS-marked locations and cave routes? Travel access saves time, while a secluded site can force repeated detours.
Defensibility Do you have visibility and enough room for walls, traps or a work area? Open ground is easier to watch and build on, but may offer less natural cover.

For the first night, favor a site that makes saving and resupplying easy. For a permanent base, reassess after you have explored enough to understand local threats and travel patterns. Moving a small camp is cheap compared with building a large structure in a location that fails one of these tests.

Save deliberately and understand the cost of early deaths

The tent is your first reliable save point, so use it before major departures and after meaningful progress. Saving is most valuable immediately before a cave, a long supply run or any experiment with an unfamiliar enemy.

The death page describes a severe early-game consequence: if you lose all health a second time before you have survived a day, the game can return you to the crash site, remove inventory items and reset statistics. This is why repeated “just one more attempt” deaths are especially costly at the beginning. A retreat that preserves your save and equipment is often the correct tactical decision.

Recovery procedure after a failed outing

  1. Do not immediately repeat the same route. Identify whether cold, low vitality, darkness, poor supplies or an enemy encounter caused the failure.
  2. Return to the tent and save once you have recovered enough to do so safely.
  3. Replace the missing basics first: food, water, light and construction materials.
  4. Change one variable on the next attempt, such as leaving earlier, taking a different route or avoiding the encounter.
  5. Use Kelvin for low-risk gathering while you rebuild your reserve, rather than exposing yourself to another long trip with an empty inventory.

A complete first-day plan

First 10 minutes: stabilize

  • Open the emergency pack.
  • Collect nearby supplies at the crash site.
  • Equip the GPS and a light source.
  • Gather enough sticks and one tarp for a tent.

Next 20–30 minutes: create a recovery point

  • Move a short distance to a practical temporary camp.
  • Use the Guide Book to place and complete the tarp-and-stick tent.
  • Save and sleep so the next trip starts from a controlled position.
  • Identify where food, water, sticks and rocks are easiest to collect.

Remainder of the first day: build a reserve

  • Gather basic materials without outrunning your warmth, rest or vitality.
  • Give Kelvin a simple stick, rock, clearing, shelter or fire assignment.
  • Use the inventory to organize equipment and quick selection.
  • Return to camp before darkness or exhaustion turns a routine trip into a forced fight.

Only after that: test exploration

Take a short surface trip toward a GPS-marked point if your supplies and route are secure. Treat a cave as an optional escalation, not a first-day requirement. If the trip reveals enemies, cold or poor visibility, return, save and improve the camp before trying again.

Patch and version considerations

The Sons of the Forest Wiki overview lists Patch 16 Hotfix 3 as released on October 3, 2025. Controls, item locations and companion behavior can change after updates. If a button, item position or Kelvin command does not match an older guide, verify the live game’s current controls and labels rather than assuming your installation is broken.

The principles in this guide are deliberately more durable than a keybind: open the starting pack, establish a save-and-sleep point, protect the survival meters, use Kelvin for support work, and scale exploration to your equipment and recovery options.
