The reliable way to create an online store with WordPress is to build the store in this order: choose hosting and a domain, install a current WordPress version, add WooCommerce, complete its setup wizard, select a compatible theme, add products, connect a payment processor, configure shipping and tax, then test, back up and launch.

A small, mostly standard shop can be configured in about two to four hours. A store with custom design, complex products or unusual fulfilment can take several days. The steps below separate what WooCommerce requires from what you can customise later, so you can launch a sound foundation without committing to unnecessary extensions.

Do this before buying hosting or importing products. WooCommerce’s current server recommendations are targets for a supported, maintainable store; older tutorials often repeat end-of-life minimums that are not sensible targets for a new installation.

The enforced floor can be lower than the recommendation. WooCommerce 10.8 lists PHP 7.4 as its minimum, but running at that floor leaves less room for current WordPress, extensions and future WooCommerce releases. WooCommerce 11.3 adds a dismissible dashboard notice for stores running PHP 7.4 or 8.0, and the planned WooCommerce 11.6 release in February 2027 requires PHP 8.1 or newer. Ask your host about its upgrade path rather than choosing a server that only meets an old minimum.

Choose hosting and a domain
Managed WordPress hosting
WooCommerce-optimised managed hosting generally provides a tuned PHP stack, backups, caching controls and support staff familiar with WordPress. It normally costs more than basic shared hosting, but the performance and troubleshooting advantages matter once customers are checking out. Confirm exactly which backups, staging tools and support responses are included; prices and limits change frequently and were not established here.
General shared hosting
A small shop with modest traffic can work on shared hosting. It is the lower-cost starting point, but resources are shared with other sites and support may not cover WooCommerce-specific problems. Check CPU and memory limits, backup retention, SSL renewal and whether PHP can be upgraded before you commit.

Register a domain that is easy to say and type, then point its DNS records to the host. Enable HTTPS before installing WooCommerce. Do not collect real customer data over an unencrypted HTTP connection.
Install WordPress and secure the foundation
- Use the host’s one-click WordPress installer, or create a database and install WordPress manually if your host does not provide an installer.
- Set the site title, administrator username, a unique password and an administrative email address. Use an individual administrator account rather than sharing credentials.
- In the WordPress dashboard, update WordPress, the active theme and any preinstalled plugins before adding store data.
- Confirm that the site’s WordPress Address and Site Address use
https://. Test the home page and the login page in a private browser window. - Remove unused themes and plugins. Every inactive component is another item that needs security updates.
Keep a record of the host, domain registrar, administrator email and recovery methods. You will need access to all of them when a payment processor or domain service asks for verification.

Install WooCommerce and run the setup wizard
- In WordPress, open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for WooCommerce, install the official plugin and select Activate.
- When the setup wizard opens, enter the store address and choose the operating country or region. These settings influence available payment and shipping options.
- Select the store currency and its position, decimal separator and number of decimals. Use the currency in which customers will be charged, and check whether your payment processor supports it.
- Choose the product types you intend to sell. The wizard can then suggest suitable payment, shipping and tax settings.
- Review the suggested payment gateways, shipping zones and tax configuration. You can change each one later under WooCommerce settings.
- Save the wizard’s choices, then open the store and checkout pages in a second browser window to confirm that they load.
The wizard accelerates setup; it does not decide your legal tax obligations, delivery promises or processor account. Treat its defaults as a starting configuration and verify every value.
Select a theme without blocking the checkout
Choose a theme that declares WooCommerce compatibility, receives updates and keeps the cart and checkout readable on a phone. Lightweight free themes such as Storefront, Botiga, Astra, GeneratePress and Kadence are among the options cited in current setup guides. A multipurpose paid theme can offer more visual controls, but it also adds code and settings to maintain.

- Install and activate the theme from Appearance > Themes.
- Use the Customizer or Site Editor to set the logo, colours, typography, navigation and homepage.
- Check product, cart, checkout, account and order-confirmation pages at narrow and wide screen sizes.
- Do not edit a parent theme’s files directly. Use its supported customisation method or a child theme so updates do not erase changes.
Add products and organise the catalogue
In the dashboard, open Products > Add New. A useful product record contains enough information for a customer to decide and for you to fulfil the order.
- Enter a clear product title and a description that states what the buyer receives, important specifications and any limitations.
- Upload a main image and a gallery. Use consistent backgrounds, crop ratios and filenames; compress large images before uploading.
- Set the regular price and, if applicable, a sale price with its start and end dates.
- In the inventory panel, add a stock-keeping unit (SKU), enable stock management if you want WooCommerce to reduce inventory after purchase, and set an out-of-stock behaviour.
- Assign a category and relevant tags. Keep the category tree short enough that a shopper can understand it from the navigation.
- Preview the product, test its add-to-cart button and publish it only after checking the mobile layout.
Use the same naming, image and SKU conventions for every item. Consistency makes bulk editing, fulfilment and customer support much easier as the catalogue grows.

Connect payments and test them before launch
A payment gateway transfers checkout data to a processor and returns an approval or failure to WooCommerce. You need a merchant account with the processor and the API keys or connection credentials it issues. Never paste live keys into a screenshot, ticket or shared document.
Choose the payment methods your customers actually use
Stripe and PayPal are common gateway choices. Depending on country and extension availability, you may also offer provider-native card methods, WooPayments, pay-later services such as Klarna or Riverty, and local methods such as Bancontact in Belgium. Offline methods such as cheque or cash on delivery can be enabled when your fulfilment process supports them. Availability, approval requirements and transaction fees vary by processor and region; no universal fee figure should be assumed.
Configure a gateway
- Create and verify the processor account outside WordPress.
- Install the processor’s official WooCommerce extension if it is not already available in your installation.
- Open the gateway’s settings under WooCommerce > Settings > Payments, enable the method and enter the requested API keys or connect the account.
- Set the statement descriptor, capture or authorisation behaviour and any email or fraud-screening options offered by the processor.
- Use the gateway’s test or sandbox mode and its test credentials. Place successful, declined and cancelled test transactions, then confirm the resulting order statuses and emails.
- Only after the test results are correct, switch to live mode and replace test credentials with live keys. Make one small real transaction and refund it if your processor’s verification process allows.
Test the complete path: an item is added to the cart, the customer reaches HTTPS checkout, the processor approves or declines, WooCommerce records the order, inventory changes as expected and the customer receives the correct confirmation.
Set shipping zones, methods and tax rules
Shipping
- Open WooCommerce > Settings > Shipping and create a zone for each area to which you deliver.
- Assign countries, states or postal-code ranges to each zone. Put the most specific zones first when ranges overlap.
- Add the methods you actually offer, such as a flat rate, free shipping threshold or local pickup, and enter the charge or conditions.
- Set product weights and dimensions when your carrier or rate calculation depends on them.
- Place a test order for every important zone and verify that the correct method appears at checkout.
Do not promise a delivery time merely because a shipping method exists. Confirm carrier collection times, packaging, exclusions and return handling before publishing the promise.

Tax
Tax rules depend on the seller’s location, the customer’s location, product classification and registration status. Under WooCommerce > Settings > Tax, decide whether prices are entered inclusive or exclusive of tax, create the applicable rates and test the display in the cart and checkout. Obtain advice for your jurisdiction when registration thresholds, digital goods or cross-border sales apply. WooCommerce’s wizard can suggest settings, but it cannot determine your legal obligation.

Make automated backups that are stored off the production server. A useful backup includes the database, uploaded media, themes, plugins and configuration. Test restoring a backup; a backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.

Use a staging copy for WordPress, WooCommerce, theme and plugin updates. After updating on staging, test login, product pages, cart, checkout, payment callbacks, shipping calculations and email delivery before applying the same changes to the live store. Schedule updates rather than allowing an untested change during a sales period.
For a quick environment check, open WooCommerce > Status in WordPress. The Server environment section shows the PHP version and other values that help explain compatibility warnings. If the displayed environment is below WooCommerce’s recommendation, ask the host about upgrading PHP, the database or the memory limit before troubleshooting plugin code.

Run a launch checklist
- The domain resolves to the correct server and every store page uses HTTPS.
- WordPress, WooCommerce, the theme and extensions are updated and compatible.
- Administrator recovery details are available to more than one trusted person.
- Products have accurate titles, descriptions, images, prices, SKUs, categories and stock behaviour.
- Cart, checkout, account and order-confirmation pages work on a phone and desktop.
- At least one successful and one failed payment have been exercised in gateway test mode.
- Live payment credentials are stored securely and test mode is disabled before accepting customers.
- Each delivery zone displays the intended method and charge.
- Tax display and rates have been checked against the seller’s obligations.
- Order emails reach the store and customer addresses, including a failed-payment notification.
- Offsite backups run and a recent restore has been verified.
- A rollback plan exists for the next update, and the staging copy is available.
How long the setup takes and what changes the timeline
The basic sequence can take roughly two to four hours when the domain, hosting account, product information and processor account are ready. That estimate covers configuration, not writing product copy, photographing items, obtaining tax advice, negotiating carrier accounts or designing a custom storefront.
Expect the schedule to expand to days when you need a bespoke theme, many products, complex shipping zones, multiple currencies, subscriptions, external inventory or custom integrations. Build the simplest version that can accept and fulfil a real order, then add one extension at a time while keeping staging and backups in place.

Common problems and the safest fixes
The installer reports an unsupported PHP or database version
Do not force-install an older stack merely because an old tutorial lists it. Check the version in WooCommerce > Status, ask the host to move the site to a supported release and test the theme and extensions on staging before changing production.
The checkout is blank or returns an error
Temporarily switch to a default WooCommerce-compatible theme on staging and disable nonessential extensions one at a time. If the problem disappears, re-enable components individually to identify the conflict. Also verify HTTPS, the assigned checkout page and the payment gateway’s test connection.
Orders remain pending after a successful payment
Check the processor dashboard for the transaction, then inspect the gateway’s webhook or callback configuration and its event log. Regenerate keys only after confirming that the account and site are connected to the same test or live mode; mixing modes is a common configuration mistake.
Shipping or tax is missing at checkout
Confirm the customer’s address matches a configured zone, that the product has the required weight or tax class, and that overlapping zones are ordered correctly. Place a fresh test order after each change rather than relying on a cached cart.
The complete sequence in one view
- Buy a domain and select hosting that meets the current WordPress and WooCommerce recommendations.
- Enable HTTPS, install WordPress and remove unused components.
- Install WooCommerce and complete the store, currency, product, payment, shipping and tax wizard.
- Activate a maintained theme and verify every commerce page on mobile and desktop.
- Add products with consistent descriptions, images, prices, inventory, SKUs, categories and tags.
- Connect a processor with its API keys, run test transactions and confirm order and email behaviour.
- Configure delivery zones, methods and legally appropriate tax rates.
- Create offsite backups, test restoration and use staging for updates.
- Run the launch checklist, switch the gateway to live mode and monitor the first orders closely.
Following this order gives you a functioning WooCommerce store before you spend time on optional design and marketing work, while leaving a controlled path for customisation as sales and operational needs grow.
