You can self-host an open AI model on a Linux VPS by installing an inference runtime, placing a license-compatible model on the server, and keeping the runtime behind an authenticated, encrypted network layer. The practical choice depends first on hardware: a CPU-only VPS can run smaller, quantized models with lower throughput, while a GPU VPS is useful only when its accelerator, drivers, and passthrough stack are compatible with your runtime.

Ollama is the quickest route for a single user or small service. llama.cpp gives more control over model files and how many layers use a GPU. vLLM is designed primarily for GPU-backed APIs and higher concurrency, but requires more careful accelerator and security configuration.

What self-hosting an AI model on a VPS actually involves

A VPS is a rented Linux server with allocated CPU, memory, storage and, in some plans, an attached accelerator. Self-hosting means the model weights and inference process run on that server rather than on a hosted AI endpoint. Your application sends prompts to a service you control, and the service returns generated text.

The model itself is only one component. You also need a serving runtime, a Linux service account, storage for model files, a network policy, authentication, logging and a way to limit requests. Treat the inference API like any other production network service: it can consume substantial memory and compute, and an accidentally public listener can be abused.

Check the VPS before installing anything

Confirm the operating system and administrator access

  • Choose a Linux image supported by your VPS provider and by the runtime version you intend to use.
  • Create a non-root administrator account and use root only for system installation and service management.
  • Apply operating-system updates, configure a host firewall and disable unnecessary network services before downloading model files.

Measure the resources that determine whether a model will fit

Do not select a model from its parameter count alone. The model files, runtime overhead, context window and simultaneous requests all compete for RAM or VRAM. Quantization can reduce the memory footprint, but may change quality and supported formats. A model that loads for one short prompt can still fail when a long context or a second user is added.

  • RAM and VRAM: leave headroom for the operating system, runtime, model cache and request-time buffers.
  • Storage: reserve space for the initial model and for additional versions, quantizations and logs. Model downloads can consume more disk than the base Linux image.
  • CPU: check instruction-set support and the number of usable cores. CPU inference works, but throughput depends heavily on model size, context length and VPS contention.
  • Network: account for model download time and the bandwidth needed by clients if the API is remote.

There is no single RAM or GPU number that fits every model. Decide the model, quantization, maximum context and expected concurrency together, then verify that combination on the actual VPS.

Verify that an advertised GPU is usable

A “GPU VPS” label is not enough. The provider must expose the accelerator to your guest, provide a compatible driver path and permit the runtime to discover it. Ollama’s GPU documentation lists NVIDIA compute capability 5.0 or newer as the compatibility threshold and documents an AMD path through ROCm. A card that meets a marketing description but lacks driver or passthrough support will behave like a CPU-only machine.

Before deployment, obtain the exact GPU model, driver version, virtualization or passthrough arrangement and supported runtime versions from the provider. Test discovery from inside the VPS, not from the provider’s product page. If discovery fails, either correct the driver stack or configure CPU inference rather than assuming acceleration is active.

Choose an inference runtime

Runtime Setup effort Best fit Hardware and control Main operational concern
Ollama Lowest; it publishes a one-line Linux installer. Single-user tools and small services. Runs on CPU and can use supported NVIDIA or AMD acceleration. Correct GPU discovery and safe service exposure.
llama.cpp Moderate; Docker or build choices and explicit model parameters. Lightweight serving where you want fine-grained control. CPU and several accelerator backends; GPU layers are configured explicitly. Matching the model format, port and GPU-layer settings.
vLLM Highest; accelerator, Python and package compatibility matter. GPU-backed APIs, batching and higher concurrency. Primarily GPU-oriented; use its versioned accelerator matrix. Resource exhaustion and secure network exposure.

These are capability distinctions from the projects’ documentation, not a controlled benchmark. Throughput and latency vary with model size, quantization, context length, VPS oversubscription and accelerator type.

Provision and harden the base server

  1. Create the VPS and inspect it. Record the Linux distribution, CPU features, available RAM, storage, GPU model and driver details. Confirm that you can log in with your non-root account.
  2. Patch the host. Install current security updates and remove services you do not need. Reboot if the distribution requires it.
  3. Set a firewall policy. Allow SSH from your administration network and expose only the reverse-proxy ports you actually use. Keep the inference listener private while testing.
  4. Prepare storage. Put model files on a volume with enough free space for updates and rollback copies. Monitor free space because failed downloads and multiple quantizations can silently fill a disk.
  5. Create service boundaries. Run the runtime under a dedicated account where possible, with only the directory and devices it needs. Avoid running an internet-facing inference process as root.
  6. Document rollback. Record the runtime version, model identifier, quantization and configuration before each change so you can return to a known working combination.

Install Ollama for the shortest path

Install the runtime

On a supported Linux host, Ollama’s official installation command is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh

Use the project’s quickstart and API documentation for the model-download and service commands that match the current release. Keep the first test local to the VPS. Confirm that the process starts, that the selected model can be loaded and that a short prompt completes before changing network exposure.

Check acceleration instead of assuming it

After installation, inspect the runtime’s reported hardware and the host’s driver status. If an NVIDIA device is not discovered, verify the driver and the provider’s passthrough configuration; installing a runtime alone cannot create GPU access. For AMD, use the documented ROCm compatibility path. If the VPS has no supported accelerator, choose a model and quantization that fit CPU memory and plan for lower throughput.

Keep the service private during validation

Bind the service to localhost or a private interface while you test model loading, context limits and error handling. A local test proves that the runtime works without exposing an unauthenticated endpoint to the internet. Only after the service is stable should you place a controlled proxy in front of it.

Serve a model with llama.cpp

llama.cpp provides a Docker-based server as well as build options. The deployment has four decisions that must agree:

  • Model file: use a format supported by the server build you selected.
  • Volume mount: mount the host directory containing the model into the container at a read-only path when practical.
  • Port: publish only the port needed by your private network or reverse proxy, rather than exposing the container broadly.
  • Acceleration: select the CUDA image or other documented backend when appropriate and set --n-gpu-layers deliberately. More layers on the GPU can reduce CPU work, but only if VRAM is sufficient.

Start with a conservative layer count and a short context. Increase GPU layers or context only after observing memory use under a real request. A container that starts with an empty or incorrectly mounted model directory can appear healthy while every request fails, so verify the model path from inside the container and check startup logs.

Deploy vLLM when GPU serving and concurrency are the priority

vLLM is aimed at GPU-backed serving. Follow its versioned installation matrix for the exact accelerator, driver, Python version and package combination on your VPS. Do not copy an installation intended for a different CUDA or accelerator release and assume it is interchangeable.

Before loading a large model, test the environment with a small, license-compatible model and a single request. Then establish limits for maximum context, request size, concurrent sequences and batching. vLLM’s security guidance warns that very large request parameters can allocate substantial CPU, GPU and memory resources and trigger out-of-memory failures.

Pay particular attention to initialization networking. The vLLM security guidance warns that TCP initialization can listen on all network interfaces by default. Restrict bind addresses and firewall access explicitly, even when the service is meant to be used only by another application on the same host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Select a model and verify its license

Choose the model only after deciding the task, hardware and serving runtime. Compare the model’s file size and supported quantizations with the VPS memory available after the operating system and runtime are running. Set a maximum context that your workload needs rather than accepting an unnecessarily large default.

License permission is separate from technical compatibility. A model can load successfully in Ollama, llama.cpp, vLLM or another compatible stack while still imposing restrictions on commercial use, redistribution, attribution or acceptable use. Read the specific license and any model-card conditions before serving it to customers or embedding it in a public application.

Open-model deployment guidance from OpenAI lists vLLM, Ollama, llama.cpp and Transformers as compatible stacks for its open models. That compatibility statement does not grant rights for every model or use case; check the license attached to the exact weights you download.

Expose the API without turning the VPS into an open relay

Use a private listener first

During setup, bind the runtime to localhost or a private network address. Permit access only from the application host, VPN or administrator network. This limits accidental data exposure while you are still changing model and runtime settings.

Add an authenticated reverse proxy for public clients

If outside clients must connect, put a reverse proxy or gateway in front of the inference service. The proxy should:

  • Terminate TLS with a certificate managed for the service’s hostname.
  • Require authentication and reject unauthenticated requests before they reach the model.
  • Apply per-user or per-key rate limits and concurrent-request caps.
  • Enforce maximum request body, prompt, completion and context sizes.
  • Forward only the API paths and methods your application needs.
  • Log request identifiers, status codes, latency and resource failures without storing sensitive prompts by default.

Keep the runtime’s private port out of public firewall rules. If TLS or FIPS-level controls are required, supply them in the proxy or platform layer; do not assume the inference runtime provides every transport-security feature itself.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Set resource limits that match the workload

Memory use grows with model size, context length and concurrency. Start with one client and a bounded context, then increase one variable at a time while watching RAM, VRAM, swap activity, CPU load and latency. A request that succeeds alone may fail when several clients arrive together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Model limits: keep only the versions you need on the host and remove failed or obsolete downloads.
  • Request limits: cap prompt and output sizes at the proxy and runtime layers.
  • Concurrency: set a maximum number of active generations; queue or reject excess work instead of allowing unbounded allocation.
  • Timeouts: terminate stalled requests and return a clear error to the caller.
  • Observability: alert on low disk space, sustained memory pressure, GPU allocation failures, rising latency and repeated authentication failures.

There is no universal tokens-per-second figure for a VPS. Measure your own model and workload because quantization, context, accelerator, CPU contention and provider oversubscription all change the result.

Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see

Symptom Likely cause Action
Runtime uses CPU despite a GPU plan Unsupported accelerator, missing driver or failed passthrough. Check the exact device and driver inside the VPS, compare them with the runtime’s support requirements, then correct the provider or driver configuration before tuning the model.
Model loads, then requests fail with out-of-memory errors Context, concurrency or request limits exceed available RAM or VRAM. Reduce context and concurrent requests, select a smaller or more aggressively quantized model, and leave headroom for the operating system.
Container starts but cannot find the model Incorrect volume mount or model path. Inspect the mounted directory from inside the container, verify read permissions and use the path expected by the server build.
Local requests work but remote requests time out Private bind address, firewall rule or proxy routing problem. Test each hop separately: local runtime, private-network reachability, proxy listener, firewall and TLS. Do not expose the runtime directly just to bypass the proxy.
Latency rises sharply with multiple users CPU or GPU saturation, oversized context or unbounded batching. Measure resource usage, cap concurrency and context, then decide whether a smaller model, a GPU-backed runtime or a larger VPS is justified.
Disk fills during updates Multiple model copies, partial downloads or verbose logs. Remove incomplete artifacts, retain only required model versions and rotate logs before attempting another download.

Choose between CPU and GPU deployment

CPU-only VPS

CPU inference is the simplest fallback when no compatible accelerator is available. It avoids GPU driver and passthrough issues, but generation is generally slower and concurrent workloads consume CPU quickly. Use a model and quantization that leave memory headroom, keep context limits realistic and design the client to tolerate longer response times.

GPU VPS

A compatible GPU can improve throughput and concurrency, but it adds driver, image and monitoring requirements. Validate the actual device from the guest, select a runtime backend supported by that device and watch VRAM under the longest context and highest expected concurrency. The advertised GPU model alone is not a guarantee of usable acceleration.

A practical deployment checklist

  • Supported Linux image and patched host.
  • Non-root administrator and dedicated runtime account.
  • Measured RAM, storage, CPU features and, if present, GPU and driver details.
  • Model whose license permits the intended use.
  • Model format and quantization supported by the chosen runtime.
  • Private listener during installation and testing.
  • Firewall rules that expose only administration and proxy ports.
  • Authentication, TLS, rate limits, request-size limits and concurrency caps before public access.
  • Monitoring for RAM or VRAM pressure, disk growth, latency, failed requests and suspicious traffic.
  • A recorded runtime, model and configuration version so you can roll back.

Which runtime should you start with?

Start with Ollama when you need the shortest installation path for one user or a small internal service and its supported hardware matches your VPS. Choose llama.cpp when you need a lightweight server and explicit control over model mounting, ports and GPU-layer assignment. Choose vLLM when the VPS has a supported GPU and your application benefits from batching or higher concurrency, accepting the additional accelerator and security work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whichever runtime you choose, the safe sequence is the same: verify hardware, install one serving stack, load a license-compatible model, test privately, impose resource limits and only then publish an authenticated TLS endpoint.
