To create a MySQL trigger on an Ubuntu VPS, install and secure MySQL, select the correct schema, inspect the target table, then run CREATE TRIGGER with a timing (BEFORE or AFTER), event (INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE), and FOR EACH ROW body. Test the exact data-change statements your application uses, inspect the resulting object with SHOW CREATE TRIGGER, and keep a tested DROP TRIGGER rollback ready.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide covers Ubuntu service preparation, row images with OLD and NEW, trigger ordering, privileges and definers, backup-led deployment, and the common reasons a trigger appears not to fire.

A trigger is a named database object associated with a permanent table. MySQL runs it once for every row affected by a matching INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE event. This makes triggers useful for enforcing row-level normalization, filling derived values, and writing audit records close to the data change.
Triggers are synchronous: the triggering statement waits for the trigger body to finish. A trigger error therefore causes the statement that activated it to fail. That coupling is valuable for invariants and audit consistency, but it also means trigger code adds work to every affected row and must be deployed like application code.

Statements that activate triggers
| Operation | Trigger behavior |
|---|---|
INSERT |
Activates an INSERT trigger for each inserted row. |
UPDATE |
Activates an UPDATE trigger for each row actually updated. |
DELETE |
Activates a DELETE trigger for each deleted row. |
LOAD DATA |
Can activate insert triggers while loading rows. |
REPLACE |
Can activate insert triggers and, depending on the replacement path, other relevant row operations. |
TRUNCATE TABLE or DROP TABLE |
Does not act as a row-by-row delete event, so delete triggers do not run. |
| Cascaded foreign-key actions | Do not activate triggers on the affected child rows. |
| Non-SQL data APIs | Changes made without sending SQL through MySQL do not activate SQL triggers. |
Design and test against the statements your application, import jobs, and maintenance scripts actually issue. An audit trigger that covers ordinary DELETE statements will not automatically record a TRUNCATE TABLE or a foreign-key cascade.
Prepare MySQL on Ubuntu
Install and verify the service
On a supported Ubuntu Server, install the distribution package and check the service:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo apt update
sudo apt install mysql-server
sudo systemctl status mysql
Ubuntu documents that the server starts automatically after installation. If you change configuration or need to restart it, use:
sudo systemctl restart mysql.service
For startup or runtime failures, inspect the systemd journal:
sudo journalctl -u mysql
Before changing database objects, confirm that the service is healthy and record the server version:
mysql --version
sudo mysql -u root -e "SELECT VERSION();"
Use a separate application account
Ubuntu’s packaged server commonly configures the local root account for socket authentication. Local administration can therefore use:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo mysql -u root
Do not put that administrative account in application configuration. Create a dedicated account with only the privileges needed by the application and its trigger operations. Keep schema changes in a controlled migration account or deployment session rather than granting broad administrative access to the running application.
Keep the database private by default
Leave MySQL bound to localhost unless a remote connection is genuinely required. If remote access is necessary, edit:

Set the required bind address, restrict the VPS firewall and provider-level network controls to known source addresses, and restart MySQL. Exposing port 3306 broadly creates an avoidable attack surface; a private application-to-database path is normally safer.
Choose trigger timing and event
The core form is:
CREATE [DEFINER = user] TRIGGER trigger_name
BEFORE | AFTER INSERT | UPDATE | DELETE
ON table_name
FOR EACH ROW
trigger_body;
The target must be a permanent table, not a view or temporary table. Choose the timing based on what the body must do:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Choice | Good fit | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|
BEFORE INSERT or BEFORE UPDATE |
Validate, normalize, or assign values on the incoming row. | NEW can be assigned in the relevant before-trigger cases; the row must still satisfy data types and constraints. |
AFTER INSERT, AFTER UPDATE, or AFTER DELETE |
Write an audit row or perform side-effect work after the row operation succeeds. | The triggering row operation has completed, so use the final row image and avoid treating the trigger as asynchronous processing. |
Use one trigger when its responsibility is cohesive. If several triggers share the same timing and event, make their order explicit with FOLLOWS or PRECEDES rather than relying on an accidental creation order.
Understand OLD and NEW row images
OLD.column is the value from the row before the operation. NEW.column is the value being inserted or the proposed value after an update. Insert triggers have no old row image; delete triggers have no new row image. Update triggers can inspect both.
| Event | Available image | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
INSERT |
NEW |
Default or normalize incoming data. |
UPDATE |
OLD and NEW |
Record the previous and resulting values. |
DELETE |
OLD |
Archive or audit the deleted row. |
Assignments to NEW are primarily useful in BEFORE triggers. Make the assignment compatible with the column type, nullability, and constraints; a trigger is not a substitute for understanding the table definition.
Create a trigger step by step
1. Select the schema and inspect the table
USE app_db;
DESCRIBE orders;
Confirm column names, data types, defaults, generated columns, and constraints before writing the body. Also verify that the audit table or other destination already exists with compatible columns.
2. Create a single-statement trigger
This trigger supplies a timestamp only when the insert did not provide one:
CREATE TRIGGER orders_bi_audit
BEFORE INSERT ON orders
FOR EACH ROW
SET NEW.created_at = COALESCE(NEW.created_at, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP);
The trigger name is unique within the schema. Naming it with the table, timing, and event makes it easier to find in deployment logs and inspection output.

3. Create a multi-statement trigger
Interactive MySQL clients use semicolons to terminate statements. Change the client delimiter while defining a body that contains several statements:
DELIMITER $$
CREATE TRIGGER orders_au_audit
AFTER UPDATE ON orders
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
INSERT INTO order_audit(order_id, old_status, new_status, changed_at)
VALUES (OLD.id, OLD.status, NEW.status, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP);
END$$
DELIMITER ;
DELIMITER is a client command, not part of the stored trigger definition. Migration tools may manage statement boundaries differently, so follow that tool’s documented SQL execution method rather than blindly sending the interactive-client delimiter commands.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Make execution order deliberate
If another trigger already handles the same timing and event, specify placement during creation:
CREATE TRIGGER orders_au_notify
AFTER UPDATE ON orders
FOLLOWS orders_au_audit
FOR EACH ROW
BEGIN
INSERT INTO order_notifications(order_id, changed_at)
VALUES (NEW.id, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP);
END;
Use either FOLLOWS or PRECEDES with an existing trigger for that same table, event, and timing. Document the dependency in the migration so a later rename or replacement does not silently change behavior.
Privileges and DEFINER security
Creation privilege
The account issuing CREATE TRIGGER needs the TRIGGER privilege on the subject table. A deployment account may have this privilege even when the application account does not.
Activation privilege
When a trigger fires, MySQL checks the privileges of the trigger’s DEFINER, not the account that issued the data-changing statement. The definer may need TRIGGER, SELECT, UPDATE, and the privileges required by every statement in the body. Reading OLD or NEW requires the documented read privileges; assigning to NEW requires update privilege; writing an audit table requires the appropriate privileges on that table.
Choose a definer deliberately
If you omit DEFINER, MySQL uses the account executing CREATE TRIGGER. This is operationally simple, but it ties the object to that account’s identity. If a stable service account is appropriate, specify a real account:
CREATE DEFINER = 'trigger_owner'@'localhost'
TRIGGER orders_bi_audit
BEFORE INSERT ON orders
FOR EACH ROW
SET NEW.created_at = COALESCE(NEW.created_at, CURRENT_TIMESTAMP);
Grant that account only what the trigger requires and ensure it remains present during migrations, restores, and account rotations. A missing or under-privileged definer can make an otherwise valid trigger fail at runtime.

Inspect existing triggers
Use these statements before and after a deployment:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →SHOW TRIGGERS FROM app_db;
SHOW CREATE TRIGGER app_db.orders_au_audit;
SHOW TRIGGERS gives a schema-level inventory, while SHOW CREATE TRIGGER reveals the stored definition, timing, event, and definer for one object. Capture this output with the migration record so you can compare the live database with the intended definition.
Because trigger names share a schema namespace, two tables cannot safely use the same trigger name in one schema. Include the schema-qualified name when inspecting or removing an object to avoid operating in the wrong database.
Drop, replace, and roll back safely
Drop an object explicitly
DROP TRIGGER IF EXISTS app_db.orders_au_audit;
IF EXISTS makes a rollback or cleanup step idempotent. It does not preserve the trigger, so run it only after recording the current definition and confirming the target schema.
Replace a trigger through a migration
MySQL does not use a universal CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER form. A controlled replacement is therefore a drop followed by a create, executed in the intended schema and maintenance window:
- Export or record the existing definition with
SHOW CREATE TRIGGER. - Back up the database before changing the object.
- Drop the old trigger with the fully qualified name.
- Create the new definition, including any required
DEFINERand ordering clause. - Run representative DML and inspect the resulting side effects.
- Keep the original definition and the drop command available for immediate rollback.
If the trigger change caused incorrect data or a broader migration problem, dropping the object stops future activations but does not undo rows already changed. Restore from the backup when data repair requires it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Back up before deployment
Ubuntu documents both mysqldump and MySQL Shell Dump Utility for backup and restore workflows. Choose one that matches your database size, restore process, and operational standards, then verify that the resulting backup can be read and restored in a safe environment.
A logical dump example for a single schema is:
mysqldump -u backup_user -p --databases app_db > app_db-before-triggers.sql
Store the backup securely, record when it was taken, and confirm that it includes the tables affected by the trigger and any audit destination tables. A backup is useful only if its credentials, storage, and restore procedure are available when needed.

Test every path that matters
Do not test only one hand-written insert. Exercise the same statement classes used in production and verify both the base row and every side effect.

- Insert one valid row and confirm the
BEFOREtrigger supplied or normalized the expected value. - Insert multiple rows in one statement and verify that the trigger ran once per inserted row.
- Update a row without changing the audited column, then update it with a real change; confirm that
OLDandNEWcontain the expected images. - Delete a row and verify the audit record uses
OLD. - Run the import or bulk statement used by the application, including
LOAD DATAwhere applicable. - Test the application’s
REPLACEbehavior if it uses that statement. - Attempt invalid data and confirm that type or constraint failures do not leave an incomplete side effect.
- Run a multi-row operation and check transaction behavior when one affected row causes the trigger body to fail.
After testing, run SHOW CREATE TRIGGER and inspect audit rows, timestamps, and application responses. A successful CREATE TRIGGER command proves only that the definition was accepted, not that every production path will activate it.
Why a trigger does not fire
The statement is not an activating event
Check whether the code uses TRUNCATE TABLE, DROP TABLE, a foreign-key cascade, or a non-SQL API. These paths do not activate row triggers. Replace the operation with a tested row-level statement if trigger behavior is required, or implement separate maintenance auditing.
The trigger is in another schema or table
Run SHOW TRIGGERS FROM app_db and confirm the exact table, event, and timing. A trigger belongs to one named table; creating a similarly named object in another schema does not affect the application table.
The data path is not the event you assumed
An insert trigger will not run for an update, and a delete trigger will not run for an insert. Check the actual SQL emitted by the application, including bulk loads and replacement statements. For updates, confirm that rows are genuinely matched and changed as expected.
The definer cannot execute the body
Inspect the stored definition and account named by DEFINER. Verify that the account exists and has the required privileges on the subject table, referenced columns, and audit tables. Runtime privilege errors often appear only when the first matching DML statement fires.
The trigger failed and the statement rolled back
Review the client error, MySQL error log, and service journal. Because trigger execution is synchronous, an error in the body can abort the triggering statement. Check data types, nullability, duplicate keys in the audit table, and permissions before retrying.
Execution order is different from the design
List all triggers for the table and compare their ordering. Add FOLLOWS or PRECEDES to make same-event, same-time dependencies explicit, then retest the complete chain.
Operational design choices
| Decision | Use a trigger when | Consider another mechanism when |
|---|---|---|
BEFORE versus AFTER |
The rule must run as part of the row change and requires incoming or final row values. | The work is slow, remote, or better handled asynchronously. |
| Validation/normalization versus audit | The rule must protect every SQL writer, including scripts and imports. | The rule depends on user-interface context that is not present in the row. |
| One trigger versus several | One cohesive body is easier to reason about and deploy. | Separate responsibilities need independent ownership, but then define ordering explicitly. |
| Synchronous side effect versus application processing | The side effect must succeed or fail atomically with the row change. | Latency, retries, external services, or high write volume make synchronous work unsuitable. |
| Explicit definer versus implicit creator | A stable, least-privilege service account must own execution. | Account lifecycle is simple and tying the object to the migration account is acceptable. |
Keep trigger bodies short, deterministic, and documented. Treat their privileges, ordering, and rollback definition as part of the schema contract, not as hidden application behavior.
