There isn’t one universal way to create a Roblox “face”: a flat face decal, facial makeup, a custom animated head, and a face used only inside your own game are different things. If you have a 2D decal and want an animated avatar head, Roblox’s Avatar Setup tool can help convert it. If you want a fully custom dynamic head, you’ll need 3D modeling, UV mapping, rigging, and facial poses.
Choose the kind of Roblox face you want to make

A decal, makeup item, and dynamic head are not interchangeable asset types. Roblox’s Avatar Setup documentation explains the decal-conversion workflow, while its dynamic-head tutorial covers custom animated heads.
Convert a 2D face decal into a dynamic head
This route suits creators who already have a face texture and want Roblox to process it into a dynamic head. Avatar Setup infers eye and mouth regions from the texture, generates cages and FACS data, and maps the result to a dynamic-head template. It is an automated starting point, not a guarantee that the result will pass validation or moderation.
- Prepare the character body and head. The face should point forward and be visible in the preview. If you manually aligned the model, Roblox documents a “Manually align front” setting.
- Run Avatar Setup with both the body and head. In Avatar Setup, enable “Handle face as 2D decal” for the face-decal conversion workflow. Roblox warns: “If you only run Avatar Setup with the character’s head, this speciality setting will fail.”
- Inspect the generated result. Check the generated model, errors, and facial behavior in Studio; correct problems rather than assuming automatic processing produced a submission-ready asset.
- Submit only if you want to publish it. Using a head in your own experience and selling it as a Marketplace item are different outcomes, with Marketplace eligibility and technical requirements applying to submissions.
Create a custom animated head
A custom dynamic head is a 3D modeling and rigging project, not a painted image alone. Roblox’s tutorial uses third-party software such as Blender or Maya and assumes prior knowledge of modeling, UV mapping, rigging, animation, and character setup. The tutorial currently references Blender 5.2; software interfaces and steps can change between versions.

Build and prepare the model
- Create or modify suitable head geometry and map its surface with UVs so facial textures align as intended.
- Set up the rig or internal joint structure needed for facial movement, then create and save the facial poses.
- Export the model into Roblox Studio and use the tutorial’s setup and validation workflow.
Distinguish tutorial poses from sale requirements
Roblox Creator Hub says there are 50 base poses available to portray a range of facial expressions, while a specific 17 poses are required to sell a dynamic head on the Marketplace. Its tutorial maps five basic FACS poses as a learning exercise; those five alone do not meet the stated 17-pose Marketplace requirement. Build and validate the required poses and controls for the intended submission.

You can create a face for use in an experience without making it a Marketplace product. The Marketplace is for avatar items offered to users; the Creator Store is for development assets. If you plan to sell an avatar item, Roblox’s publishing documentation describes upload through Studio for technical validation and moderation, followed by publishing and metadata configuration.

Before uploading, check Roblox’s current Marketplace publishing requirements and avatar-asset fees. Roblox’s fee documentation, accessed in 2026, states that avatar-asset upload requires account verification through the creator’s government ID or a linked parental account with government ID verification. It lists an 80 Robux fee per submission, or 500 Robux for assets using an emissive mask. Fees and eligibility rules can change, so confirm the current terms before submitting.

Common problems to check
- Avatar Setup fails on the decal route: Confirm you included the character body as well as the head and enabled “Handle face as 2D decal.”
- The face appears backward or is not detected correctly: Check that the face points forward and is visible in the preview; use “Manually align front” if you manually aligned the model.
- The head moves poorly: Review the rig, saved facial poses, and Studio validation rather than treating a successful conversion or import as proof of correct facial behavior.
- A submission is rejected or cannot be uploaded: Check technical validation, moderation, account eligibility, and current fees. Automated setup does not bypass those checks.
