What TablePress does
TablePress is a WordPress plugin with a spreadsheet-style dashboard editor. Basic table creation does not require HTML coding. You can enter text and numbers, add images and links, include HTML or JavaScript content, and use formulas in cells. Tables remain separate from your page content, so you can update one table and have every placement of that table show the change.

TablePress says it is “the most popular and highest-rated WordPress table plugin” and that it powers more than 750,000 sites. Those are the vendor’s marketing claims, not an independent market measurement. The official plugin information describes the administration workflow as adding, importing, exporting, editing, copying, and deleting tables from the TablePress section of the WordPress admin menu.
Check requirements and protect your data first
The current release identified for this guide is TablePress 3.4.1, released October 12, 2026. It requires WordPress 6.7 or later and PHP 7.4 or newer. Confirm both versions before installing; an older WordPress or PHP environment may prevent installation or cause compatibility problems.

- Decide whether you will enter the data manually or import an existing file.
- Gather the final column headings, row order, links, images, and formulas before you start.
- Keep a current WordPress backup, or export your existing tables, before a major plugin, WordPress, or PHP change.
- If the table contains sensitive information, decide who should be allowed to edit it before choosing a premium access-rights feature.
Install and activate TablePress
- Sign in to WordPress with an account that can install plugins.
- Open Plugins > Add New Plugin, search for TablePress, and select the official plugin listing.
- Choose Install Now, wait for the installation to finish, and select Activate.
- Look for TablePress in the WordPress Dashboard menu. The table-management screens are available there after activation.
If TablePress does not appear, check that activation completed and that the site meets the WordPress and PHP requirements. A failed installation is usually an environment or permissions issue rather than a table-content issue; resolve that before importing data.
Create a table manually
Open the table editor
- In the Dashboard, open TablePress and choose the action to add or create a table.
- Enter a descriptive table name. Add a description when editors or visitors need context about the data.
- Set the initial number of rows and columns, then open the spreadsheet-like editor.
You can change the structure as you work, so the initial dimensions do not need to be perfect. Keep one clear value per cell when you want reliable sorting and filtering. Put a column label in the first row rather than mixing a title or explanatory sentence into the data grid.
Enter and format cell content
Type or paste values into the cells. TablePress supports plain text, numbers, images, links, HTML, JavaScript content, and formulas. Use links when a visitor needs to open a source or detail page, and use images only when their dimensions will remain usable on the page. Test any HTML, JavaScript, or formula after saving because a malformed expression can affect the displayed table.
Use the table controls to insert or delete rows and columns, copy a table when you need a similar layout, and remove unused tables only after checking every page that embeds them. A table’s ID, rather than its name, is what the shortcode uses for embedding.

Import an Excel, CSV, HTML, or JSON table
TablePress can import data from a file upload, a URL, a server path, or manually supplied input. Supported formats include Excel, CSV, HTML, and JSON, with additional formats documented for some workflows. A one-time import can also pull from Google Sheets, Google Drive, Excel Online, OneDrive, or Dropbox.
Import from a file or location
- Open TablePress in the Dashboard and select the option to import a table.
- Choose the source type: upload a file, provide a URL, enter a server path, or supply the data manually.
- Select the file or enter its location, then choose the import action.
- Review the preview carefully. Check that the header row, column count, line breaks, links, and special characters were interpreted correctly.
- Give the imported table a name and description, save it, and open it in the editor for any cleanup.
For a CSV file, make sure the delimiter and text encoding match the file you exported. If values appear in the wrong columns, correct the source file and import again rather than trying to repair a large number of cells individually. For an HTML or JSON source, confirm that the source actually contains a table structure that TablePress can parse.

One-time online imports versus automatic updates
The documented online-service imports are useful for bringing in a snapshot. They do not, by themselves, promise that later changes in the online document will update your WordPress table. Automatic periodic imports are a TablePress Max feature. If the table must refresh on a schedule, choose Max only after confirming that its import method, schedule, permissions, and source format fit your workflow.
Configure headers, display, and visitor controls
Open a table’s settings in the editor before publishing. The available options let you decide how the table looks and how visitors interact with it.

Structure and appearance options
- Choose whether the first row is a header and whether a footer row should be used.
- Enable alternating row colors to make long tables easier to scan.
- Enable hover highlighting when visitors benefit from seeing the row under the pointer.
- Choose whether the table name and description appear above the table.
- Use the available CSS styling controls when the table needs to match the surrounding WordPress design.
Sorting, pagination, scrolling, and search
These visitor features are configured per table. Enable sorting when users need to order a column, pagination when showing every row at once would make the page unwieldy, scrolling when the table is wider than its container, and filtering or searching when visitors need to find a specific value. Test the controls with realistic data: a search box is useful only when the visible labels and values are consistent enough to match what a visitor will type.
Do not enable every control automatically. A short five-row table usually needs neither pagination nor a search field, while a large catalog may need both. Decide based on the number of rows, the width of the columns, and the task visitors are trying to complete.

A desktop table can overflow a narrow phone viewport even when the WordPress page itself is responsive. TablePress provides a Responsive Tables module with documented layout modes. Select the mode that preserves the relationships between headings and values for your data.

After selecting a mode, preview the page at a phone width and check long headings, links, images, and any interactive controls. A responsive mode changes presentation; it does not fix incorrect data, excessively long text, or a poorly chosen column order.

Save and publish the table in WordPress
Use the block editor
- Save the table in TablePress and note its table ID.
- Edit the WordPress page or post where it belongs.
- Insert the TablePress table block.
- Select the table from the block’s list, then preview the page.
- Publish or update the page.
The block points to the saved TablePress table. When you later edit the table in the TablePress dashboard, the embedded version reflects those changes without requiring you to rebuild the page.
Use a shortcode
When a block is unsuitable, place this shortcode in the WordPress editor or another field that processes shortcodes:
[table id=N /]
Replace N with the table’s numeric ID. Keep the space and slash exactly as shown in the documented form. If the shortcode prints as plain text, the location you used is not processing shortcodes; move it to a standard shortcode-capable field or use the TablePress block instead.
Use a page-builder widget
Elementor users can insert the TablePress widget and choose the saved table. The widget is an alternative embedding method, not a separate copy of the table, so edits made in TablePress remain the source of truth.

Maintain, export, and recover tables
Export before risky changes
TablePress can export tables as CSV, HTML, or JSON. Multiple exports can be packaged as a ZIP. Export a table before a major redesign, bulk edit, plugin update, or migration. Keep the export with the date and table name so you can identify the correct recovery copy.
Use backups as a second recovery path
An export protects the table data; a full WordPress backup also protects the surrounding site and configuration. Keep both when a table is business-critical. If an edit produces unexpected output, restore the last known-good export or backup rather than repeatedly modifying the damaged copy.
Review embedded locations
Before deleting or replacing a table, search your pages and posts for its block, shortcode, or widget. A table can be used in more than one location, and deleting it can leave those placements empty. Copy the table when you need a new version while preserving the original for existing pages.
Basic, Pro, or Max: which tier fits?
Basic covers ordinary tables: table management, unlimited tables, block, widget, and shortcode embedding, file and URL imports, exports, formulas, basic options, and CSS styling. The official pricing page lists Pro at $89 per year and Max at $189 per year. Prices and feature bundles can change, so verify the current listing before purchasing.

Choose Basic when
Use Basic for a finite table that you will edit in WordPress, import occasionally, and embed with a block, shortcode, or widget. It is the sensible starting point for schedules, item lists, feature matrices, and other tables that do not need automation or advanced mobile behavior.
Choose Pro when
Choose Pro when responsive layouts, fixed rows or columns, advanced filtering, or visitor action buttons solve a known problem. The extra cost is justified by a specific interaction or layout requirement, not simply by having a table.

Choose Max when
Choose Max when the table must refresh automatically, needs advanced access rights, handles a large data set with server-side processing, requires advanced loading, needs email notifications, or must connect through the REST API. Confirm the source system and update schedule before relying on an automated import.

Troubleshoot common problems
The plugin is installed but no TablePress menu appears
- Confirm that the plugin is activated, not merely installed.
- Check that WordPress is 6.7 or newer and PHP is 7.4 or newer.
- Sign out and back in if the dashboard was open during activation.

The imported columns or characters are wrong

- For a widget, verify that the selected table still exists and was not deleted or renamed through a replacement workflow.
The table is too wide on mobile
- Enable the Responsive Tables module and test scroll, collapse/modal, stack, or flip.
- Shorten unnecessarily long headings and check image dimensions.
- Use scrolling when row-by-row comparison is essential; use stack or collapse when each record should be read vertically.
Search, sorting, or pagination is confusing visitors
- Enable only the controls needed for the table’s size and purpose.
- Make sure the first row is configured as a header so column labels are clear.
- Test searches using the exact spelling and punctuation visitors are likely to enter.

- WordPress and PHP meet the TablePress 3.4.1 requirements.
