What Makes a Good Protagonist in a Survival Horror Game?

A strong survival-horror protagonist makes danger personal without making survival feel predetermined. The character must be vulnerable enough for threats to matter, capable enough for the player to make meaningful choices, and emotionally specific enough to earn concern. Scarce resources, a carefully chosen point of view, important relationships and morally costly decisions then turn those traits into playable fear. An ordinary civilian is one effective model, but it is not a universal rule.

Start with the central tension: vulnerability plus agency

Survival horror depends on an unstable balance. If the protagonist is invincible, danger becomes spectacle. If the character is helpless in every practical sense, the player has no meaningful way to respond and tension can flatten into frustration. The most useful design question is not “How weak is this character?” but “What can this character do, and when does doing it stop being enough?”

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Masachika Kawata, producer of Resident Evil 7, described its lead as “an ordinary person stuck in an extraordinary situation.” In Capcom’s June 24, 2016 developer interview, he connected that framing to the player’s uncertainty about whether the character can cope: “That’s a real feeling of helplessness that helps the horror stand out.” The ordinary-person approach works because the protagonist’s limits are easy to understand. A player does not need a lengthy explanation for why an unprepared civilian fears a hostile house.

That framing should not be mistaken for a demand that every protagonist be inexperienced. A trained survivor, investigator or soldier can also support horror if the game identifies situations that exceed their training, isolate them from support or make their skills expensive to use. Competence creates agency; limits preserve uncertainty. The designer’s task is to make both visible in play rather than merely announcing them in dialogue.

Make vulnerability concrete

Vulnerability is designed through the character’s body, knowledge, equipment and circumstances. A protagonist may be physically outmatched, unable to interpret what is happening, injured, separated from allies or forced to protect someone else. Each condition changes what the player can safely attempt. A locked route means something different when the character has no tools, when a companion is waiting behind the door, or when opening it will reveal the player’s position.

Good vulnerability also has a readable cause. The player should understand why a threat cannot simply be ignored or solved with a familiar tactic. If an enemy is dangerous because ammunition is scarce, the inventory and encounter design must make that scarcity legible. If the protagonist is frightened because they do not know who is trustworthy, scenes should provide incomplete but interpretable evidence rather than arbitrary reversals.

Preserve a path through fear

Jun Takeuchi’s description of survival horror emphasizes a cycle in which players feel fear and eventually confront and overcome it. GameSpot’s 2016 interview with the Resident Evil 7 team describes this rhythm as “a cycle of tension and release.” Release does not mean that every encounter ends in victory. It can be a safe room, a solved puzzle, a temporary escape, a new piece of information or the decision to spend a valuable item. What matters is that the player can convert fear into an action with consequences.

This is why a protagonist’s abilities should be limited rather than absent. The ability to barricade a door, read a map, craft a treatment or land a difficult shot gives the player a route through danger. The fact that each ability works only under certain conditions keeps the route uncertain. A good character kit creates questions such as “Can I survive this fight?” and “What will surviving it cost me?” instead of reducing every encounter to either automatic victory or a scripted defeat.

Use resources to turn personality into decisions

Capcom identifies exploration, puzzle-solving, resource management and combat as pillars of the Resident Evil approach. Those systems matter to characterization because they make the protagonist’s survival a sequence of judgments. A resource is not frightening merely because its quantity is low; it is frightening when spending it reveals what the character values and what the player is willing to risk.

Give every scarce item a competing use

Design ammunition, healing, light, tools or safe storage so that the player must choose among plausible alternatives. A shot can remove an immediate threat, while avoiding that threat may conserve ammunition but expose the protagonist to a longer route. A healing item can restore the ability to fight, yet carrying it may mean leaving a key tool behind. These trade-offs make the protagonist’s capability feel conditional rather than abstract.

Scarcity should be paced around decisions, not used as a permanent punishment. If supplies are so restricted that the player cannot recover from an early mistake, fear becomes bookkeeping. If supplies are so plentiful that every threat can be neutralized, the character’s vulnerability is cosmetic. The useful middle ground lets players recover through exploration or skill while making a careless choice costly.

Let exploration and puzzles reveal the character

Exploration is more than movement between combat arenas. The route a protagonist takes can show what they fear, whom they trust and which risks they accept. A character searching every room for medicine communicates a different priority from one who pushes directly toward a trapped companion. Puzzle design can similarly connect practical action to emotional need: finding a way through a barrier may be inseparable from deciding whether to expose another person to danger.

The player should be able to understand the logic of the protagonist’s actions even when the situation is frightening. Clear goals do not reduce horror; they give fear direction. “Find the missing person,” “restore power to the exit” or “determine whether the voice is genuine” creates a path through uncertainty while leaving the solution and its price unresolved.

Choose a point of view that serves the intended connection

Camera perspective changes what the player notices and how they interpret the protagonist. Capcom chose first person for Resident Evil 7 to put the player in the character’s position. That direct embodiment can make distance, darkness and sudden movement feel immediate because the player sees from the protagonist’s approximate location rather than watching a separate avatar.

First person: direct embodiment

First person is especially useful when the design depends on limited information. The player cannot routinely inspect the protagonist’s face, so fear is communicated through sound, movement, breathing, delayed reactions and what the character can or cannot see. The perspective can also make ordinary actions—opening a door, leaning around a corner, reading a note—feel exposed because the player occupies the same narrow field of attention as the character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The trade-off is reduced visual access to performance. If the protagonist’s changing expression is central to a scene, first person must convey that change through voice, gesture at the edges of the frame, animation and dialogue, or briefly shift perspective for a deliberate reason. The camera should be selected for the kind of connection the game needs, not because one format is inherently more frightening.

Third person: readable performance

Discussing The Callisto Protocol on PlayStation.Blog on August 23, 2022, creator Glen Schofield said: “Rather than feature a silent, faceless character, we really wanted to put Jacob’s humanity front and center to capture the terror and emotion he experiences as he explores Black Iron Prison.” A visible body and face let players read pain, hesitation, exhaustion and resolve while still controlling the character through danger.

Third person can therefore support horror built around observation: the player watches an expression change, sees a character limp after an injury or notices how an enemy approaches from outside the avatar’s immediate view. The camera can create vulnerability by showing a threat the protagonist has not yet perceived, but overuse of that information can weaken uncertainty. Decide whether each scene should make the player inhabit fear, observe it, or alternate between both.

Give the protagonist emotional specificity

Fear becomes memorable when it threatens something particular. A generic objective such as “escape” can motivate movement, but a specific relationship, promise, guilt or need gives the same movement meaning. Emotional specificity does not require a long biography. It requires a small number of priorities that consistently shape what the protagonist notices and chooses.

Build relationships that alter play

A companion, missing relative, former partner or distrusted authority can change the value of every resource and route. The relationship should affect decisions rather than exist only in exposition. Protecting someone may force the player to spend ammunition; distrusting them may require a longer investigation; believing them may open a shortcut that later becomes dangerous. When a bond changes the available options, the player experiences the relationship as part of survival rather than as a separate story layer.

Neil Druckmann, discussing The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation.Blog on October 9, 2019, described Ellie’s evolution by saying, “I think she’s really come into her own.” His discussion of Ellie’s attachments and choices illustrates a broader principle: a protagonist’s journey is legible when changing relationships alter the decisions the player is asked to make. The character’s development should be expressed through action, not only through a later statement that they have changed.

Use performance to carry inner conflict

Facial animation, body language, vocal delivery and timing can make a practical action emotionally legible. A pause before opening a door, a glance toward an injured ally or a hand that trembles while reloading can tell the player what the protagonist fears without explaining it. Nuanced performance is most effective when the game allows the player to create the situation that prompts it. A reaction to a choice the player made feels more personal than a reaction that plays identically after every route.

Make moral pressure playable

Survival horror becomes more unsettling when the player cannot reduce every person to a target or every choice to a clean solution. Takeuchi described a moment of hesitation with the question, “Is it OK for me to shoot?” The power of that question comes from uncertainty with stakes: the player must act before complete information is available, and the decision says something about both the protagonist and the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Design uncertainty with evidence

Moral ambiguity should not be random. Give the player conflicting signals, partial testimony or observable behavior that supports more than one interpretation. A figure may appear dangerous but also be protecting someone; an apparently safe route may abandon another person; a hostile act may be deliberate or caused by the environment. The player can then make a reasoned choice while still fearing that the reasoning is wrong.

Let consequences remain specific

A moral choice has weight when it changes a relationship, resource state, route or later encounter. Consequences need not be a simple good-versus-bad score. A decision can preserve ammunition but destroy trust, save one person while exposing another, or reveal that the protagonist’s assumptions were self-serving. Avoid presenting moral pressure as a decorative dialogue prompt that leaves the underlying game unchanged.

Compare protagonist models with the same design questions

There is no single correct template. A vulnerable civilian, a trained survivor and a highly capable action-horror lead can all work when their strengths and limits fit the game’s systems. Use the following axes to test a concept before committing to its backstory or camera.

Axis Design question
Vulnerability What can threaten this character, and why can’t they simply dismiss it?
Competence Which abilities create agency, and where do those abilities stop helping?
Resources What does the player lack, and what trade-offs follow?
Embodiment Does the camera place the player inside the character or let them read the character from outside?
Emotional legibility Can players understand the protagonist’s fear, priorities and change?
Relationships Who matters to the protagonist, and how do those bonds affect choices?
Moral agency Are the protagonist’s actions uncertain, costly or revealing?

These questions are a practical synthesis of the developer interviews discussed above, not a published scoring system or a player-tested ranking. They help expose mismatches. For example, a highly trained lead may require enemies that attack through unfamiliar rules, a mission that conflicts with professional protocol or resources that cannot be replenished. A civilian may need a believable reason to learn basic survival skills without becoming an expert overnight. The right model is the one that keeps the player making consequential decisions in the game’s intended rhythm.

A step-by-step method for creating the protagonist

  1. Write the survival problem in one sentence. State what the character must accomplish and what makes failure personal. If the objective is only “escape,” add the person, promise or truth that gives escape meaning.
  2. List the character’s starting abilities. Include physical skills, knowledge, social leverage and equipment. Mark which abilities are reliable, which are slow or risky, and which are unavailable under pressure.
  3. Define the boundary of competence. Create situations in which the protagonist’s best skill is insufficient, costly or morally compromised. This boundary is where uncertainty enters.
  4. Turn scarcity into competing actions. For each limited resource, specify at least two uses and the consequence of choosing one. Check that exploration, puzzles and combat all feed into these decisions.
  5. Select the camera for the scene’s emotional job. Use first person when occupying the protagonist’s limited viewpoint is the priority; use a visible avatar when expression, physical vulnerability or observed behavior must carry the moment. Mix perspectives only when the change has a clear purpose.
  6. Give relationships mechanical consequences. Decide how protecting, trusting, abandoning or deceiving another person changes routes, resources or information. Remove relationships that never affect a choice.
  7. Place a moral question before the player has certainty. Supply enough evidence for a reasoned decision, then make the outcome alter the character’s situation rather than merely changing a line of dialogue.
  8. Test the emotional readability of failure. When the player loses, the result should clarify what was at stake: a person left behind, a resource wasted, a promise broken or a dangerous truth missed. Failure that communicates nothing feels arbitrary.

Common mistakes that weaken a horror protagonist

  • Declaring vulnerability without designing it: A frightened line cannot compensate for generous supplies, effortless combat and no meaningful consequences.
  • Confusing helplessness with inactivity: The player needs a route through danger, even if that route is narrow, costly or temporary.
  • Making competence limitless: A character who can solve every threat with the same tactic turns resource management and exploration into routine.
  • Using relationships as decoration: If a bond never changes a decision, it cannot carry much survival pressure.
  • Adding moral choices without uncertainty: A clearly labeled correct answer produces compliance, not dread.
  • Choosing perspective by habit: First person and third person create different forms of connection; neither automatically produces stronger horror.
  • Equating complexity with emotional depth: A few consistent priorities, expressed through playable choices and performance, can be more powerful than an elaborate biography.

What the evidence can—and cannot—establish

The interviews with Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 team, Glen Schofield and Neil Druckmann document specific creative intentions: ordinary-person vulnerability, a tension-and-release rhythm, direct or observable embodiment, human relationships and morally uncertain choices. They do not report a named statistic proving that one protagonist type or camera perspective performs best for all players. Treat the principles as design tools to test against the particular game, not as universal laws or guarantees of audience response.
