On PC, open the Xbox app and sign in to the Xbox account you use for Sea of Thieves.

Open Friends, search for your friend’s gamertag, open their profile, and select Add Friend. Check the spelling and spacing if the profile does not appear. You can also add friends through the mobile Xbox app. [Sea of Thieves Support]

How do I invite an Xbox friend from PC?
For the Steam version

Sign in to the Microsoft/Xbox services with the Xbox profile you intend to use in Sea of Thieves. When launching the game, sign in with that same profile and link it to Steam when prompted. A mismatched profile can keep the expected friends or invitations from appearing. [Sea of Thieves Support]

Ask your friend to accept the incoming invitation. On Steam, invitations can appear in an in-game pop-up and through Xbox Game Bar; follow the displayed prompt to join. [Sea of Thieves Support]
For the Xbox app or Microsoft Store version
Use the same Xbox-friend setup and the game’s Invite Friends flow. The detailed instructions for in-game invite locations cited above are specific to the Steam version, so menu behavior may differ for other PC editions.

What should I check if my friend is missing?

Confirm the gamertag: Search it again and check spelling, spacing, and the profile you selected.

Do I need to change crossplay matchmaking settings?

Will my progress carry between PC and Xbox?
Progress is associated with the Xbox account. Use the same intended account when playing on different platforms; if you see a new pirate or missing progress, support says to check whether you have signed in with the wrong account. [Sea of Thieves Support]
Does the Steam version require an Xbox account?
Sea of Thieves’ Steam FAQ says a free Xbox Live account is required to play the Steam version and that Steam players can crew with Xbox and Windows players.
