Where to find an Altar of Spellmaking
The official Oblivion PC manual describes the Altar of Spellmaking at the Praxographical Center in the Arcane University, in the Imperial City. Access is tied to reaching the proper Mages Guild rank. The cited manual passage does not specify a numeric rank or spell-school skill threshold for Oblivion Remastered.
A Remastered-specific route reported by Beebom’s guide is Frostcrag Spire, a player home near Bruma. The guide says you can reach the spire after leaving the Imperial City sewers, but must buy a Magetallow Candles Box from Aurelinwae at the Mystic Emporium to unlock the relevant section. The guide’s quoted price is approximate and has not been independently verified, so check the merchant’s current price in your game.

How to make a custom spell
- Reach an Altar of Spellmaking. Use the Arcane University altar if you have the required Mages Guild access, or the Frostcrag Spire route described above.
- Choose from Known Effects. The altar only lets you use effects your character has already learned. It cannot create an effect you have never acquired.
- Add and configure each effect. Select an effect, then set its available properties, such as magnitude and duration. You can add area where applicable and combine two or more effects in one spell.
- Choose a range. The options described in the Remastered guide are Self, which affects the caster; Touch, for a nearby target; and Target, which sends a projectile that applies on impact.
- Review the costs and requirement. Check Magicka Cost, Cost to Create, Current Gold and Skill to Cast. The creation cost is paid in gold; the casting cost uses Magicka each time you cast the spell.
- Name and create the spell. Enter a name in the altar interface and select the creation option once the spell is affordable and usable by your character.
The altar’s labels and warnings are documented in Bethesda Softworks’ Oblivion PC manual. It cautions: “Don’t make spells that cost more Magicka than you have, or which require more skill than you have.”

How to keep a spell affordable and usable
Start with one effect at a modest magnitude and duration, then inspect the displayed Magicka cost. Add area, increase strength or duration, or combine another effect only after checking how each change affects the total. This incremental approach makes it easier to catch a spell that exceeds your Magicka or Skill to Cast before spending gold to create it.
Magnitude and area affect Magicka cost, according to Beebom’s guide. The altar provides the values to review before you commit; use those displayed figures for your character and current spell rather than assuming a cost based on another build.

What to do if altar controls stop working
Bethesda Support says a controller issue that prevented changing categories or selecting skills in the Altar of Spellmaking was fixed in an update dated July 16, 2025. If the problem continues, follow the steps in Bethesda’s troubleshooting article:
- Update the game, then exit and reopen the altar.
- Try pressing the Name button early in the altar process.
- Save and reload, or load a save from before entering the area.
- Fast travel away and return; Bethesda notes that waiting three in-game days may occasionally help.
- Restart the game. On PC, verify the game files.
- Disable mods or add-ons where applicable.
