Shell swaps, paint, and skins are third-party physical modifications: check product fit and instructions, and review your local warranty and service terms before altering a controller.
Choose a different Joy-Con color
For a substantial appearance change without modifying a controller, replace one or both Joy-Con with controllers in another color. Nintendo UK’s accessories page lists options including grey, neon, blue and yellow, and pastel combinations. Its examples include Pastel Pink (L) / Pastel Yellow (R) and Pastel Purple (L) / Pastel Green (R), both listed with a release date of 30 June 2023. That date is the pairs’ release date, not a statement about current stock or availability.
Nintendo UK also says left and right Joy-Con can be purchased separately, so you can mix colors rather than replace a matched pair. Add a small, reversible accent with straps
Colored Joy-Con straps change the edge of each controller while leaving its main shell untouched. Nintendo says each strap works with either the left or right Joy-Con, so you can choose a color accent without matching a specific side. This is a smaller visual change than swapping controllers, but it is removable and does not require opening them. Nintendo UK Joy-Con controllers

Consider skins, paint, or shell swaps carefully
Adhesive skins, painted shells, and replacement shells are physical modifications or third-party accessories, not appearance options endorsed by the Nintendo support pages cited here. The sources do not establish the fit or quality of any specific kit, so check that a product explicitly fits your Joy-Con model and follow its maker’s instructions. A shell swap involves opening the controller; paint and adhesives also alter its surface.
Nintendo says it can provide service only for accessories made by Nintendo and directs owners of products made by other companies, whether licensed or unlicensed, to their manufacturer. That guidance does not establish that every third-party product will fail, nor does it determine whether a particular modification affects warranty coverage. Nintendo says official gaming accessories carry its Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal. Its Spanish-language support page says unofficial products and accessories do not go through Nintendo’s testing and evaluation process; that is a compatibility caution, not evidence that every unlicensed skin or shell is incompatible. Check compatibility if you use a Switch Lite
Joy-Con do not physically attach to a Nintendo Switch Lite. Nintendo says you can use them with Lite after registering them, but separate charging equipment is needed. Do not assume Lite has side rails or that a standard-console attachment method applies. Nintendo Japan Joy-Con support

Appearance changes are not button remapping
Changing controller colors, straps, or shells affects appearance. Button remapping is a separate controller setting documented on Nintendo’s Joy-Con support page; it changes controls, not how the controllers look. Nintendo Japan Joy-Con support

Pick the approach that fits your goal
- Want the largest change without opening a controller? Choose another Joy-Con color pairing, checking your regional catalog.
- Want a subtle accent you can remove? Use colored straps; Nintendo says they fit either side.
- Want a custom design or shell color? A skin or shell kit may offer more variation, but fit and quality depend on the specific third-party product. Check model compatibility, maker instructions, and support terms first.
- Using a Switch Lite? Account for separate Joy-Con registration and charging needs; the controllers do not attach to the console.
