First, identify which checkout you are editing
WooCommerce has two different checkout implementations, and they do not share every customization method. Start by opening the page assigned as checkout and inspect its content. A page built with Cart and Checkout blocks uses the block workflow. A page containing the classic [woocommerce_checkout] shortcode uses the legacy shortcode workflow.

WooCommerce states that stores started after version 8.3, released in November 2023, use Cart and Checkout blocks by default. Older stores may still use the shortcode, and an administrator can also have changed the page manually. Never assume that a PHP checkout snippet will affect every store: many classic hooks do not automatically provide equivalent behavior in the block checkout.

Prepare safely before changing checkout
Confirm the assigned checkout page
Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced and verify which page is assigned as the store checkout. A beautifully edited page will not be used if WooCommerce is pointing to a different page. This setting also matters when switching between a block page and a shortcode page.

Use a staging copy
Checkout changes can affect required data, shipping calculations, payment requests, and order creation. Make changes on a staging copy first, record the original settings, and keep a way to restore the previous page or code. Test with the same payment, shipping, tax, and user-account configuration used by the live store.
Map the business requirement to a field type
Decide whether the information belongs to the customer’s contact details, the billing or shipping address, or the order itself. A delivery instruction is different from a marketing question; putting it in the wrong location can make the form confusing and can send data to an unexpected part of the order record. Only make a field required when the store genuinely needs it to fulfill or process the order.
Method 1: Customize a Checkout block with the Site Editor
The Checkout template is the final step in the shopping journey. Its block structure covers customer details, shipping and delivery, payment methods, and order review. The Site Editor lets an administrator rearrange those areas and style the template without editing theme PHP.
Open the Checkout template
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Appearance > Editor.
- Open Templates, then choose WooCommerce.
- Select Page: Checkout.
- Use List View to identify the Checkout block and its inner sections before moving anything.
- Make the layout or style change, save the template, and then test the assigned checkout page in a new browser session.
The exact controls displayed depend on the block and theme. Work at the smallest level that solves the problem: change a block’s spacing or typography rather than replacing the whole template when only presentation needs adjustment.

Control built-in checkout fields
The Checkout Fields block exposes controls for form-step numbering and for the visibility and required state of company, address line 2, and phone fields. Use those controls when the store does not need one of these values. Hiding an unnecessary field can shorten the form; making a field required adds a validation obligation that customers must satisfy before placing the order.
- Select the Checkout Fields block inside the Checkout template.
- Open its settings panel and review the form-step numbering.
- For company, address line 2, or phone, choose whether the field is shown and whether it is required.
- Save, then complete a test order with the field both present and absent where the setting permits.
Rearrange sections without breaking the journey
Keep the customer-details, shipping-and-delivery, payment, and order-review steps in a sequence that matches how a shopper makes decisions. If you move a block, check that its labels, notices, validation messages, and payment controls remain inside the intended parent block. A visual move in the editor should be followed by an actual order test, because checkout behavior is determined by the block structure as well as its appearance.
Method 2: Customize classic shortcode checkout with PHP
If the page uses [woocommerce_checkout], the primary customization route is the woocommerce_checkout_fields filter. It can change field labels, placeholders, priorities, and related properties, and it can remove fields from the field arrays. WooCommerce’s developer guidance is to put custom code in a child theme’s functions.php or, preferably for a site-specific change, an appropriate custom plugin.
Example: remove a field and change a phone label

} );This example targets the classic billing field array. Field keys and available properties should be checked against the fields active on the store. A filter that references a missing key will not create a complete field definition by itself, and a snippet copied into the wrong theme or plugin file will have no effect.

Change required state and priority deliberately
Field priority controls ordering within the classic checkout field group. Required state changes validation, not just visual presentation. If you make a field required, test an incomplete submission and confirm that the customer receives a clear message. If you lower a field’s priority to move it, check desktop and mobile layouts because adjacent fields may wrap differently.
Know when the filter will not work
If the page is built with Checkout blocks, changing woocommerce_checkout_fields is not a reliable solution. The block checkout uses its own rendering and data APIs. Seeing no change after adding a classic filter is often evidence that the page is not using the shortcode, not that the PHP syntax is wrong. Identify the page type before debugging the snippet.

For a block checkout, WooCommerce provides woocommerce_register_additional_checkout_field for registering extra fields. Official examples cover contact, address, and order fields, including questions such as “How did you hear about us?” and an order-level “Gift message.” This is the supported starting point for a simple field rather than trying to inject HTML into the rendered block.
Choose the correct location
- Contact: information associated with reaching the customer.
- Address: information that belongs with billing or shipping details.
- Order: instructions or choices that apply to the order as a whole, such as a gift message.
Register the field with a stable namespaced identifier, a customer-facing label, the supported location, the appropriate field type, and only the validation rules the store needs. Keep the identifier stable after launch so existing integrations do not lose access to saved values. Follow the current WooCommerce API documentation for the accepted arguments and validation behavior rather than treating a classic checkout field array as a block-field definition.

Validate and consume the value
A field is useful only if the value is validated, stored, and available where staff or downstream systems expect it. Test empty, unusually long, and malformed input. Confirm where the saved value appears in the resulting order and whether fulfillment, email, export, or customer-support processes can read it. If a field requires conditional behavior, custom controls, or a specialized front-end component, the additional-field API may not be sufficient on its own.
Use JavaScript and PHP extensions for advanced behavior
More advanced block customizations use JavaScript for front-end extensions and PHP for server-side changes through supported Store API or block-extension mechanisms. Examples include dynamic controls, conditional sections, or integrations that must communicate with another service. Treat these as development projects: define the data contract, handle validation on the server, and retest after WooCommerce updates.

Checkout Add-ons
WooCommerce Checkout Add-ons is designed for order-level extras such as tips, gift wrapping, rush handling, and gift messages. It can be a better fit than custom code when the requirement includes administrative configuration and a repeatable store workflow. Its documentation warns that compatibility with the newer block checkout may require reverting to shortcode checkout. Verify the extension’s current compatibility for the exact WooCommerce version and checkout implementation before installing it on a live store.
Checkout Field Editor
Checkout Field Editor provides add, remove, and modify controls for legacy checkout fields. It is therefore a candidate for stores that intentionally use the classic shortcode checkout. Do not assume that an editor built around legacy fields will control Checkout blocks. Confirm the extension’s supported checkout type, field storage behavior, and update policy before relying on it for order-critical data.

When custom development or an agency is appropriate
Use custom JavaScript/PHP block extensibility or a Woo Agency Partner when the change affects multiple systems, has conditional logic, requires a bespoke interface, or must survive theme and WooCommerce updates. The cost is not just the initial build: compatibility testing and maintenance are part of the implementation.
Common problems and how to fix them
“My changes are not visible”
- Check the page assigned under WooCommerce > Settings > Advanced.
- Confirm whether the page contains Checkout blocks or the
[woocommerce_checkout]shortcode. - Clear any page or object cache, then test while logged out in a private window.
- Make sure the template was saved in the Site Editor and that the edited template belongs to the active theme.
“The PHP hook does nothing”
The most common cause is a block checkout. Move the requirement to the Site Editor or the additional checkout-field API. If the store is definitely using the shortcode, check that the code is loaded from the child theme or custom plugin, that the field key exists, and that another customization is not replacing the returned array later.

“A field appears but cannot be submitted”
Review required state, field type, validation, and location. A field can be visible while its value fails server-side validation. Test the empty case, invalid input, and a valid order, then inspect the created order to ensure the value was saved.
“An extension breaks the block checkout”
Disable the extension on staging and retest with the native checkout. If the extension documents shortcode-only compatibility, either keep the block checkout and choose a compatible approach or deliberately revert the checkout page to the shortcode workflow. Record the decision because future editors need to know why the page type was selected.
“The checkout looks correct but the order process fails”
Run a complete test order through shipping selection, payment, confirmation, and order administration. A layout change can expose a payment or shipping integration issue even when the editor preview looks normal. Test both a signed-in customer and a guest if the store permits guest checkout.
A practical testing checklist
- Open the assigned checkout URL on desktop and mobile widths.
- Complete the form with every optional field empty.
- Submit invalid and overlong values to verify readable validation messages.
- Test each enabled shipping and payment method.
- Check that customer, billing, shipping, and order-level values appear in the created order.
- Review customer and store notifications for the new or renamed data.
- Repeat the test while logged in and logged out.
- Retest after updating WooCommerce, the theme, or any checkout extension.
How to choose the right approach
Choose the Site Editor when the goal is layout, styling, step order, or visibility of the built-in company, address-line-2, and phone fields. Choose the classic PHP filter when the store intentionally uses the shortcode and you need precise changes to its existing field definitions. Choose the additional checkout-field API for a straightforward extra value in a block checkout. Choose an extension for a packaged feature such as tips or gift wrapping, but verify compatibility first. Choose custom block extensibility or an agency for integrations and conditional behavior that cannot be expressed safely with those tools.
Keeping the implementation aligned with the checkout type is the central maintenance decision. A block template should be customized with block-aware controls and APIs; a shortcode page should be customized with its legacy hooks or tools. Document the page type, the fields added or removed, and the tests required after updates so the next change does not reintroduce an incompatible method.
