Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteShort answer: a server-side mod runs on the server and normally does not need to be installed by players; a client-side mod runs in each player’s game and normally does not belong on the server; a content or gameplay mod usually has to be installed on both the server and every connecting client. Always check the mod’s project page for its environment, Minecraft version, and loader before copying a file anywhere.
The three installation cases at a glance
“Server-side” and “client-side” describe where a mod is allowed to run, not which mod loader it uses. A Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge mod can still require a different installation pattern from another mod built for the same loader. Environment, loader, and Minecraft version are separate compatibility checks.

| Both-sides | Server and connecting clients | Matching installation on every participant | New blocks, items, entities, or gameplay systems |
This division is a practical rule rather than a substitute for the mod author’s instructions. A project page’s environment label is the authority for that particular file. A mod can also publish separate client and server builds, or include optional features that change what must be installed.
What “side” means in Minecraft
Physical side: the program that was launched
NeoForge’s current documentation (version 26.1) calls the physical side the program you launch: the physical client is the player’s game, while the physical server is a dedicated-server process. This distinction matters because a class or library available in the client program may not exist in a dedicated-server installation. See the NeoForge sides documentation.

Forge describes the same physical split. A server launched as a dedicated server has no client rendering environment, while a normal game launch includes client code. The Forge sides documentation also explains that checking a Level object identifies the logical side to which that level belongs.
Logical side: what a level or thread is doing
The logical side is the role being executed inside the running program. A physical client can contain an integrated server for single-player or LAN play, so it can perform both client work and server work in one process. A dedicated server has the logical server only. Confusing a physical client with the logical server is a common reason that a mod appears to work in single-player but fails on a dedicated server.
For players, the practical consequence is simple: do not infer a mod’s environment from whether you play alone. Read the environment declaration and installation instructions, then test the same arrangement on the actual dedicated server and clients you intend to use.
Server-side mods: what they do and who needs them
A server-side mod changes server behavior without requiring its code or assets to be present in the connecting client. Typical examples include administration, utility, or performance features that operate entirely on the server. The server can apply those changes while an unmodified client connects, provided the mod’s author explicitly supports that arrangement.
What players see
Players may notice the result—different permissions, tick behavior, automation, or command handling—but they do not necessarily need a matching jar in their mods folder. The absence of a client installation is intentional for a server-only mod, not an incomplete setup.
What to verify
- Confirm the project page labels the file server-only or otherwise states that clients do not need it.
- Use the exact Minecraft version listed by the author.
- Use the loader named by the project, such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge; loader compatibility is independent of the environment label.
- Install the file in the dedicated server’s mods directory, not in a player’s client directory unless the author says otherwise.
A server-side designation does not guarantee that every client version can connect. The server mod may depend on a particular server version, a library mod, or a specific protocol behavior. Treat the project’s dependency list and release notes as part of the installation requirement.
Client-side mods: visual and interface features
A client-side mod runs in the player’s game and does not need to run on the dedicated server. Shaders, minimaps, interface changes, and other rendering or display enhancements are common examples. Installing such a mod on a client can change that player’s view without changing the world’s server rules.

Why the server should not receive a client-only jar
Dedicated servers do not provide the client-only classes and rendering systems that visual mods expect. Uploading a client-only file to the server can therefore make the server fail while loading mods. A troubleshooting guide documents this failure pattern for a Fabric client mod placed on a server: mcdoctor.ai’s Fabric client-mod-on-server guide.
Multiplayer behavior
Players can often use different client-only visual settings in the same multiplayer world. One person may use a minimap or shader while another uses neither. That flexibility ends if the project page identifies the mod as both-sides or says that the server must recognize a matching client; in that case, the mod is not merely cosmetic from the connection protocol’s perspective.
Both-sides mods: content and gameplay changes
Mods that add blocks, items, entities, recipes, dimensions, or other gameplay content generally need to be installed on the server and on every connecting client. The server must know the new game rules and content, while each client must have the corresponding code and assets to render and interact with them.

If one client lacks a required content mod, that client may be rejected during the connection handshake, disconnect when the world synchronizes, or encounter missing-content errors. A client that has a different version can be just as incompatible as one that has no mod at all. Keep the mod file version, Minecraft version, loader, and required dependencies aligned across the server and all clients.
Do not classify by appearance alone
A mod can look cosmetic while still adding synchronized behavior. A project’s screenshots or name are not enough to determine its environment. Use the author’s environment label and installation instructions, especially when a mod has separate client and server components.
How to determine where a mod belongs
- Open the mod’s official project page. Find the environment or side label and the installation section. Look for explicit wording such as client, server, both, dedicated server, or required on clients.
- Match the Minecraft version exactly. “1.x” is not a sufficient match when the author publishes separate builds for minor releases. Select the file whose supported version includes the version running on your server and clients.
- Match the loader exactly. Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge are different loading ecosystems. A correct environment label on the wrong loader does not make a file usable.
- Read dependencies and optional components. A library may be required on one side, both sides, or only for a particular feature. Install the versions named by the project page.
- Check the release notes for side-specific instructions. Authors sometimes move a feature between client-only and both-sides builds or publish a separate server companion.
- Test a copy before changing a live world. Back up the server and test the exact server/client combination with the same mod list. This isolates compatibility problems without risking the production world.
A project page can use “environment,” “side,” or “distribution” terminology. Whatever label it uses, record three independent values for each file: Minecraft version, loader, and environment. All three must match the installation you are building.
Forge and NeoForge: physical and logical sides in practice
Forge and NeoForge explain sidedness through the physical/logical model rather than relying on a simple per-mod switch. Forge removed the old sidedness setting from mods.toml; its documentation says mods are expected to work whether they are loaded on the physical client or the physical server. That does not make every mod universal. It means the mod’s code must be safe in the environments where it is loaded.

The class-loading failure that causes many server crashes
Forge’s sides page gives this warning: “if any class you write references those names in any way, they will crash the game when that respective class is loaded in an environment where those names do not exist.” The page is several years old, so treat it as a foundational explanation rather than a promise about every current loader release: Forge’s sides documentation.
In practical terms, a client-only class—often a renderer, screen, key-binding, or other graphics class—must not be referenced by code that a dedicated server loads. The server can crash before a world opens even when the mod’s main feature appears unrelated to graphics. A safe implementation keeps client-only references behind the appropriate side checks and registration paths.
What this means for an administrator
- Do not add a client-only jar to a Forge or NeoForge dedicated server simply because the loader accepts the file name.
- When a project says “client and server,” install the matching file on both sides and follow its dependency list.
- If a server crashes during mod construction or class loading, inspect the first mod-specific error rather than assuming the last file copied is the only cause.
NeoForge’s version-26.1 documentation provides the same conceptual separation between the launched program and the logical level or thread. Use the project’s own environment instructions in addition to that general model; the documentation’s conceptual terms do not replace a mod-specific compatibility declaration.
Fabric: the environment field and entrypoints
The fabric.mod.json environment value
Fabric declares a mod’s environment in fabric.mod.json. The specification accepts * for all environments (the default), client for the game client, or server for a dedicated server. The value can be a string or an array. Details are documented in the Fabric Wiki’s fabric.mod.json reference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A Fabric mod marked client is not loaded on a dedicated server. A mod marked server is not loaded on clients, including single-player and LAN according to the same specification. The value * means the mod is declared for both environments, but its code still has to be safe in each one.
Entrypoints determine what code starts where
Fabric’s loader uses entrypoints to run code at startup. The main entrypoint runs on both sides; client runs only on the client and server runs only on the server. Mixin entries can carry their own environment key. The current Fabric documentation for fabric.mod.json describes these keys and entrypoint behavior.
This is why a project may contain both common code and side-specific code in one jar. The metadata controls which entrypoint is invoked, while the implementation must avoid loading client-only classes on the server.

An important integrated-server qualification
Fabric’s specification says the server environment excludes integrated servers, while the Fabric documentation guide describes server-only mods as not loading in single-player or LAN. Those statements do not establish a single universal rule for every integrated-server case. If a mod’s instructions mention single-player or LAN explicitly, follow those instructions; otherwise, test the exact game version and loader combination rather than assuming that “server” always means “dedicated server only” or that it always covers an integrated server.
Installing a mod without mixing the sides
For a dedicated server
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of the world, configuration, and current mod directory.
- Verify that the server is running the loader and Minecraft version required by the mod.
- Copy only files identified as server-side or both-sides into the server’s mods directory. Keep client-only files out.
- Install every required dependency listed by the project page, using versions compatible with the same loader and Minecraft release.
- Start the server and read the complete startup log. Resolve the first environment, dependency, or version error before adding another mod.
- For a both-sides mod, distribute the identical mod version and dependencies to each player who will connect.
For a player client
- Install the loader profile that matches the server and the mod’s release.
- Place client-only and both-sides files in the client’s mods directory; do not copy server-only files unless the author specifically says the client also needs them.
- Keep the content-mod list and versions synchronized with the server.
- Launch the game once with the new set and confirm that the client reaches the title screen before joining the server.
- Join the target server and record any “missing,” “incompatible,” or “required mod” message exactly; those words usually identify whether the mismatch is on the client or server side.
For single-player or LAN
Single-player runs an integrated server inside the client process, so it can exercise both logical sides at once. A mod that succeeds there has not necessarily been tested against a dedicated server. For LAN, use the project’s explicit guidance and verify the Fabric integrated-server qualification above when applicable.
Why a server crashes after a mod is installed
Client-only code was loaded on the dedicated server
This is the classic sidedness error. Rendering or interface classes exist in the client environment but not on a dedicated server. The class-loading warning in Forge’s documentation explains why a reference in common code can crash as soon as that class is loaded. Remove the client-only file from the server, or install the server-compatible build named by the project.
The mod’s environment or entrypoint is wrong
On Fabric, inspect fabric.mod.json when the project source or documentation makes it available. A client entrypoint or a client environment declaration should not be invoked by a dedicated server. A server entrypoint should not be expected to provide client functionality.
Version, loader, or dependency mismatch
A file can be correctly classified as server-side and still fail if it targets another Minecraft release, another loader, or a missing library. Compare the exact versions in the crash report with the project page before changing side placement.
How to isolate the offending file
- Restore the last known-good backup or remove the newest mod from the server’s mods directory.
- Start the server with the remaining set and confirm whether it reaches a ready state.
- Read the earliest mod-specific exception in the log, not only the final shutdown line.
- Check that mod’s page for a server build, a required dependency, and a supported Minecraft/loader combination.
- Add the corrected file back in a test copy before returning it to the live server.
Do not “fix” a crash by installing every server file on every client. That can create a second mismatch. Correct the environment, version, loader, or dependency identified by the error.

| Question | If the answer is yes | Installation decision |
|---|---|---|
| Does it add or change blocks, items, entities, dimensions, recipes, or core gameplay? | The world and client must understand new synchronized content. | Expect a both-sides installation; confirm on the project page. |
| Does it change only rendering, screens, key bindings, or the local interface? | The feature is normally local to the player’s game. | Expect client-only placement; keep it off a dedicated server unless instructed otherwise. |
| Does it administer, optimize, or alter server operation without adding client content? | The server can apply the behavior independently. | Expect server-only placement; confirm that unmodified clients are supported. |
| Does the project label the environment explicitly? | The author has provided the most specific compatibility signal. | Follow that label over assumptions based on the mod’s name or screenshots. |
| Does it list a loader, Minecraft version, or dependency different from yours? | The file is not a drop-in match. | Choose the matching release or do not install it. |
Common misconceptions
“If it works in single-player, it is server-side.”
Single-player includes an integrated server inside the client process. A client-only feature can work there because the physical client supplies the classes it needs, even though those classes are absent from a dedicated server.

“The loader will reject a wrong-side mod automatically.”
Some metadata prevents a mod from loading in the wrong environment, but unsafe code can still crash during class loading or initialization. A successful file copy is not a compatibility test.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Every player must install every server mod.”
Server-only mods are specifically intended to run without a matching client installation when the project supports that arrangement. Installing them on clients can be unnecessary or, if the file contains server-only code, harmful.
“A client-only mod can never affect multiplayer.”
It can affect the player’s view and interface, even when it does not alter the server world. The distinction is where the authoritative gameplay change occurs, not whether another player can see the local display.
“Forge and Fabric use the same environment metadata.”
They do not. Fabric documents an environment field and side-specific entrypoints in fabric.mod.json. Forge removed the sidedness setting from mods.toml and relies on side-safe code. NeoForge documents the physical/logical model but still requires mod-specific instructions.
Keeping a multiplayer mod pack maintainable
- Maintain separate server and client manifests, plus a shared list for both-sides content.
- Record the Minecraft version, loader version, mod version, and dependency versions together.
- Distribute exact files for content mods instead of asking players to download “the latest” release.
- Keep client-only visual preferences out of the server manifest so players can choose them independently.
- Back up before updates, and update one related group of mods at a time so a regression has a clear cause.
- When a player cannot connect, compare the server’s required both-sides list with that player’s client list before changing unrelated settings.
The reliable habit is to classify first, then match versions and loaders, then test. Environment tells you where a mod is allowed to run; it does not by itself guarantee that two different releases can communicate.

Can I join a modded server with only client-side mods installed?
Usually, yes. Client-only visual or interface mods generally do not need a server copy, but the server’s project page and connection requirements take priority.
What should I do if a mod works in single-player but crashes my dedicated server?
Remove the file from the dedicated server, inspect the first mod-specific error, and verify its environment, Minecraft version, loader, and dependencies. A client-only class loaded on a dedicated server is a common cause.
Does a server-side mod need to be installed on players’ clients?
Not when the author identifies it as server-only and supports unmodified clients. Install matching copies only for mods labeled both-sides or required by the server’s connection checks.
