How to Customize Uptime Kuma Status Pages With Custom CSS

A practical guide to customizing Uptime Kuma status pages: the exact dashboard workflow, responsive CSS patterns, theme variables, public-page verification, five-minute caching, troubleshooting, multi-page maintenance, and iframe security trade-offs.

To customize an Uptime Kuma status page, open Dashboard → Status Pages, select the page, choose Edit Status Page, scroll to Custom CSS, paste valid CSS, and click Save. Then open the public /status/<slug> address in a new tab and allow for Uptime Kuma’s five-minute cache and five-minute refresh cycle before deciding that a change failed. Uptime Kuma stores the CSS per status page; there is no documented shared external stylesheet field.

Custom CSS can change colors, fonts, borders, spacing, columns, visibility, and other presentation details. It cannot change the monitoring data itself, and every selector must match the markup generated by the Uptime Kuma release you run. The safest process is to begin with one obvious rule, verify it on the public page, and add the rest of the design incrementally.

What Uptime Kuma custom CSS can and cannot do

A status page is the public-facing view of your monitored services. Uptime Kuma’s wiki describes it as a page intended for public users to check service status, rather than as another copy of the administration dashboard. The Custom CSS box lets you alter that view without editing Uptime Kuma’s application files or rebuilding its frontend.

Changes CSS can make

  • Set page, card, text, border, and accent colors to match a brand palette.
  • Change font stacks, font sizes, line heights, and visual emphasis.
  • Adjust padding, margins, gaps, border radii, shadows, and separators.
  • Arrange monitors in one or more columns at selected viewport widths.
  • Hide or show selected visual elements, such as a summary block or refresh message.
  • Define reusable color and spacing variables in a :root block.

Limits to keep in mind

CSS only changes presentation. It does not create monitors, alter incident history, change response calculations, or modify the five-minute data-refresh behavior documented by the Uptime Kuma wiki. A selector that worked against one release’s rendered HTML can stop matching after an upgrade, so treat class names as implementation details rather than a permanent API.

Prepare before editing a page

Identify the exact page and public address

Each status page has its own settings and its own public route. Note the page name and its public /status/<slug> URL before you start. If you manage several pages, make sure you are editing the intended one; CSS entered for one page does not automatically apply to another.

Check the running Uptime Kuma version

Version matters when a rule appears to work in the editor but not for visitors. Uptime Kuma’s documentation records multiple status pages from version 1.13.0 and domain-name status pages from version 1.14.0. A historical issue from 2022, #2207, reported CSS working in 1.18.3 but failing on the public page after an upgrade to 1.18.4. That report is evidence of a version-specific regression, not proof that every current release has the same defect. Record your installed version before troubleshooting and retest after upgrades.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make a reversible copy

Copy the current contents of the Custom CSS field into a local text file or version-control repository. Add a short comment at the top identifying the page and the date of the change. This gives you a quick rollback if a selector hides important information or a later rule makes the page unreadable.

Paste and publish custom CSS

  1. Sign in to the Uptime Kuma dashboard.
  2. Open Status Pages.
  3. Select the status page you want to style.
  4. Click Edit Status Page.
  5. Scroll to the Custom CSS field.
  6. Paste valid CSS into that field.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Open the page’s public /status/<slug> URL in a fresh browser tab or window.
  9. Wait through the documented five-minute cache and refresh interval before judging the result.

Do not use the editor preview as your only test. The public route is the view that unauthenticated visitors receive, and the historical 1.18.4 report specifically concerned a difference between editing behavior and the published page.

Build a stylesheet in small, testable layers

Start with one unmistakable rule

A single background change tells you whether the field, save action, public route, and selector are all working. For example:

body {
  background-color: #101827;
}

Save it, open the public page, and allow the cache/refresh interval to pass. If the color never appears, do not add more rules yet; check the troubleshooting steps later in this guide.

Use root variables for a coherent palette

Variables make a long stylesheet easier to maintain. Community theme author Cute Kuma recommends inspecting and editing the variables in its :root {} block. You can use the same pattern in your own CSS:

:root {
  --page-bg: #101827;
  --panel-bg: #172235;
  --text-main: #f5f7fb;
  --text-muted: #aeb9ca;
  --accent: #62d5a7;
  --border: #2d3b52;
  --radius: 10px;
}

body {
  background: var(--page-bg);
  color: var(--text-main);
}

.status-page section,
.status-page .monitor-list {
  background: var(--panel-bg);
  border: 1px solid var(--border);
  border-radius: var(--radius);
}

The final selectors in this example are illustrative. Uptime Kuma’s generated class names can differ by release or theme. Inspect the actual public page and replace them with selectors that exist in your installation.

Control typography and spacing

Keep a readable base size and line height before making decorative changes. A font stack should end with a generic family so the page remains usable when a preferred font is unavailable:

body {
  font-family: Inter, system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, sans-serif;
  line-height: 1.5;
}

.status-page h1,
.status-page h2 {
  letter-spacing: 0.01em;
}

.monitor-list {
  gap: 0.75rem;
}

Again, verify each class in developer tools. A rule with a nonexistent selector is harmless but produces no visible change, which can be mistaken for a caching problem.

Change the layout without sacrificing mobile usability

Two columns on wide screens

Community guidance for Cute Kuma demonstrates a two-column arrangement on wide screens. A media query keeps narrow screens in one column:

@media (min-width: 900px) {
  .monitor-list {
    display: grid;
    grid-template-columns: repeat(2, minmax(0, 1fr));
    gap: 1rem;
  }
}

This pattern assumes that .monitor-list is the container in your rendered markup. Confirm the container and its children before using the rule. Test at several widths, including a phone-sized viewport, because a layout that looks balanced on a desktop can make monitor names or status explanations difficult to scan on small screens.

When one column is the better choice

Cute Kuma’s documentation strongly recommends one column when monitor tags are enabled. Tags add another layer of text and can make a dense grid harder to interpret. To force a single column, remove the grid rule or override it:

.monitor-list {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr;
}

Use one column when the status page contains long monitor names, descriptions, tags, or incident details. A compact multi-column layout is most useful when each monitor row is short and visually consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep responsive rules close to the base rule

Place the default layout first and the wide-screen override afterward. This makes the cascade easier to understand and reduces accidental conflicts. Avoid setting fixed pixel heights on cards; status text and incident messages can expand, and a fixed height can clip the information visitors need.

Hide or restore individual elements carefully

Target a specific class, not every element

Visibility changes should use the narrowest selector that accomplishes the goal. Broad rules such as div { display: none; } can remove navigation, monitor details, or accessibility content. Write the selector for the exact element and check the result on both desktop and mobile.

The historical overall-status example

Issue #2207 used .overall-status { display: none; } as a reproduction example while discussing a 1.18.4 public-page failure. That class may be useful when investigating a matching page, but the issue is historical and version-specific; do not treat it as a guaranteed current selector or as evidence that hiding the overall status is safe for every deployment.

/* Only use after confirming this class exists in your release */
.overall-status {
  display: none;
}

Before hiding a summary, ask whether visitors rely on it to understand the overall state quickly. Removing a prominent status indicator can make an otherwise attractive page less informative.

Show the refresh timer again

Cute Kuma hides the refresh timer by default with a rule targeting .refresh-info. To restore it, remove or comment out the rule that sets display: none;:

/* Restore the timer if your theme hides it */
.refresh-info {
  display: block;
}

As with every example here, confirm the class in your page’s markup. The timer communicates that the public page is not an instantaneous dashboard; the wiki states that results are cached for five minutes and that the page refreshes every five minutes.

Use a community theme as a starting point

If you do not want to design every rule yourself, Cute Kuma provides a community theme with light and dark variants, responsive column guidance, and a refresh-timer rule. The practical workflow is to copy the theme CSS into Uptime Kuma’s Custom CSS field, save it, and then customize its :root variables first.

A sensible customization order

  1. Copy the theme into a separate backup file before editing.
  2. Read the :root block and change colors, radius, and spacing variables before touching component selectors.
  3. Save and verify the public page.
  4. Adjust the column rule after deciding whether tags and descriptions need one column.
  5. Decide whether the refresh timer should remain hidden; remove or comment out its display: none; declaration if you want it visible.
  6. Only then make targeted visibility or typography changes.

A complete theme can save time, but it also brings more selectors and more assumptions about the generated markup. When an upgrade changes the markup, a small hand-written stylesheet is usually easier to audit than a large copied theme.

Verify changes on the public page

Why edit mode is not enough

The editor is an administrative interface, while visitors load the public status route. A style can appear while editing yet fail to reach the public page because of a version regression, a selector mismatch, an unsaved change, or stale cached output. Always test the public URL after saving.

Account for the five-minute cycle

Louis Lam’s Uptime Kuma wiki, maintained in 2026, states that the status page caches results for five minutes and refreshes the page every five minutes. Treat five minutes as the documented observation window: save the CSS, open the public route, and allow that interval before concluding that a saved change is absent. If you are changing several rules, make one change at a time so you know which result you are observing.

Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
  • Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
  • Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.

Use a private window and multiple viewport sizes

A private window avoids confusing an authenticated dashboard session with the public page. Test at a desktop width, a tablet width, and a narrow phone width. Check monitor names, tags, incident text, status colors, keyboard focus, and any element you hid. A design that is visually correct at one width can still create horizontal scrolling or unreadable cards elsewhere.

Troubleshoot CSS that does not appear

Symptom Likely cause Action
Nothing changes anywhere CSS was pasted into the wrong setting, contains a syntax error, or was not saved. Return to the specific page’s Edit Status Page → Custom CSS field, save a single background-color rule, and remove unmatched braces or comments.
The editor changes but the public page does not Stale five-minute cache/refresh cycle, selector mismatch, or a release-specific regression. Open the public /status/<slug> URL, wait through the documented interval, inspect the rendered markup, and check the running Uptime Kuma version.
A rule is present but has no visual effect A more-specific rule wins, the element is not the one you targeted, or the class changed. Use browser developer tools to inspect the element, see which declaration wins, and temporarily test a narrowly scoped rule with higher specificity.
Only some monitors follow the layout The selector targets one wrapper but not all monitor containers, or nested markup differs. Inspect a working and a non-working monitor, then adjust the container selector rather than adding unrelated global rules.
The page looks broken on phones Fixed widths, a forced multi-column grid, or hidden text. Remove fixed dimensions, restore a one-column mobile rule, and test with long names, tags, and incident messages.

Reduce to a known-good baseline

  1. Copy the current stylesheet to a backup.
  2. Replace the field temporarily with one obvious rule such as body { background-color: #101827; }.
  3. Save and test the public page after the cache/refresh interval.
  4. If that works, add the original rules back in small groups until the failing selector or declaration is identified.
  5. If the baseline still fails, confirm the page, URL, version, and save action before investigating specificity.

Issue #2207 demonstrates why this sequence matters: a report from 1.18.4 cannot establish a universal current bug. Reproduce the behavior on your installed release, then consult release-specific issue information if the minimal rule fails only after an upgrade.

Can several status pages share one external stylesheet?

Not through a documented Uptime Kuma feature. Issue #7339 describes the current limitation: users paste raw CSS into a text area, and there is no documented way to reference one external stylesheet from multiple pages. The request proposed an @import url(...) approach or a dedicated external-CSS field and is marked Closed as not planned.

Practical ways to keep multiple pages consistent

  • Maintain one master CSS file in version control, then copy its contents into each page’s Custom CSS field.
  • Keep a short header comment in each copy with the master file’s revision or date.
  • Use the same :root variable names on every page so palette updates are mechanical.
  • After changing the master, update each page deliberately and verify every public URL.

Do not assume that adding an @import statement creates a supported shared stylesheet. External loading, cross-origin policy, availability of the remote host, and Uptime Kuma’s sanitization or rendering behavior can all change the result, and the issue does not document it as a supported mechanism.

Embedding a status page in an iframe

Styling the status page directly is different from placing it inside a custom surrounding site. The official Uptime Kuma wiki documents an iframe workaround that requires the environment variable UPTIME_KUMA_DISABLE_FRAME_SAMEORIGIN=true.

Security consequence

That variable disables the same-origin frame protection so the page can be framed. The wiki warns that enabling it makes the deployment vulnerable to clickjacking. Use the workaround only after evaluating who can frame the page, how authentication is handled, and whether the exposure is acceptable for your installation. Do not enable it merely to avoid writing a few CSS rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When direct CSS is preferable

Use the built-in Custom CSS field when you control the Uptime Kuma page and only need to change its presentation. Consider framing only when you genuinely need custom surrounding HTML that cannot be achieved inside the status page, and document the environment-variable change so it is not forgotten during deployment or migration.

Choose an approach by maintenance and risk

Approach Best for Maintenance Main trade-off
Small page-specific stylesheet A few colors, spacing changes, or a targeted visibility rule. Lowest; edit one page directly. Styles must be repeated on other pages.
Copied variable-based theme A consistent visual system with responsive columns and light/dark variants. Moderate; update copied theme rules when the source changes. More selectors can be affected by Uptime Kuma markup changes.
One master file copied to several pages Multiple pages that should look alike without relying on unsupported external loading. Moderate to high; synchronize every page after edits. No automatic propagation; a page can become outdated.
Iframe workaround A surrounding custom site that cannot be built inside the status page. Operational and security review required. Requires UPTIME_KUMA_DISABLE_FRAME_SAMEORIGIN=true and introduces clickjacking risk.

A repeatable production checklist

  • Confirm you selected the intended page under Status Pages.
  • Back up the existing Custom CSS.
  • Record the Uptime Kuma version.
  • Start with one reversible rule.
  • Use selectors observed in the rendered public markup.
  • Put shared colors and spacing in :root variables.
  • Keep a one-column mobile layout, especially when monitor tags are enabled.
  • Test long monitor names, descriptions, tags, incidents, and status messages.
  • Save before testing and use the public /status/<slug> URL.
  • Allow the documented five-minute cache and refresh interval.
  • Inspect specificity and computed styles in browser developer tools when a rule is overridden.
  • For several pages, copy from a maintained master rather than relying on an undocumented external import.
  • Enable the iframe environment variable only after accepting and mitigating its clickjacking exposure.

Key takeaways for a dependable customized page

The built-in workflow is deliberately simple: edit the selected status page, paste CSS, save, and verify the public route. Reliability comes from the details around that workflow: use selectors that exist in your release, make one change at a time, design for narrow screens, and wait for the documented five-minute cache and refresh cycle. Community themes can provide a useful foundation, especially when their variables are clearly organized, but they still need testing after Uptime Kuma upgrades.

Uptime Kuma does not currently document a shared external stylesheet mechanism, so several pages require a synchronization process or separate page-specific CSS. An iframe can supply custom surrounding HTML, but disabling same-origin frame protection with UPTIME_KUMA_DISABLE_FRAME_SAMEORIGIN=true carries a stated clickjacking risk. For most installations, direct Custom CSS is the simplest and safest way to give a public status page a distinct, maintainable visual identity.
