To block hidden files, configure the web server to reject HTTP requests for dot-prefixed files and directories. A leading period in a filename, or a hidden attribute in a file browser, does not protect a file once the server can map its path to a URL. On Apache, use a rewrite rule that denies dot-path components while explicitly preserving /.well-known/. On IIS, use Request Filtering’s hidden-segment and file-extension policies. Use NTFS permissions instead when access must differ by authenticated user.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Why a hidden file can still be downloaded
Operating-system visibility and web authorization are separate controls. Files such as .env, .git/config, and .svn/entries are commonly hidden from normal directory listings because their names begin with a period. If a web server can reach one through its normal URL-to-filesystem mapping, however, a client that knows the path can request it directly.

The Apache Software Foundation describes the risk plainly: unless you change the server’s behavior, a file that can be found through normal URL mapping can be served to clients. A hidden flag therefore is not a security boundary. The protection must be enforced in the server’s effective authorization path, before the request reaches a static-file handler or application route.
Blocking dot-files is public URL suppression: it prevents anonymous HTTP retrieval. It is not the same as per-user authorization. If one user should be able to read a file while another should not, combine application authentication with filesystem permissions rather than relying only on a URL-deny rule.

Decide what should be blocked before changing configuration
- Dot-prefixed paths: deny files and directories whose path component starts with a period, including nested paths such as
/assets/.cache/data. - Standard discovery files: preserve the
/.well-known/namespace when certificate, security, or other standards-based discovery files must remain reachable. - Backup and source artifacts: handle editor backups, configuration files, logs, and SQL dumps with a separate extension or filename policy. Keeping this rule separate makes its scope easier to audit.
- User-specific access: use NTFS permissions and application authorization when the requirement is “only these users may read it,” not simply “the public must not request it.”
Apply the policy at the highest configuration level you control. A main server or virtual-host configuration gives consistent coverage; a per-directory configuration can work when that is the only permitted editing location, but it must still be active for every directory that needs protection.
Apache: deny dot-files with mod_rewrite
Use the rewrite rule in the effective server configuration
Apache’s mod_rewrite can reject a request when any path component begins with a period. The following pattern also exempts standard .well-known locations. Adapt and review it for your Apache version, URL normalization, and application routing before deploying it:

RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} -d [OR]
RewriteCond %{SCRIPT_FILENAME} -f
RewriteRule "(^|/)\." - [F]
</IfModule>
The first condition is the exception. It says that a request matching the permitted .well-known structure should not be caught by the dot-file rule. The next two conditions limit the rule to paths that resolve to an existing directory or file. The final rule matches a slash or the beginning of the path followed by a period; the [F] flag returns a forbidden response instead of serving the resource.

The exception is deliberately narrow. A request for /.well-known/acme-challenge/token can remain available, while a request for /.git/config or /private/.svn/entries is denied. Review the pattern if your application rewrites URLs before static-file resolution, because the value being tested and the final filesystem path may differ in a complex routing setup.
Keep artifact filtering separate
Dot-files are only one class of accidental publication. MDN also recommends a separate FilesMatch policy for editor backup files, configuration files, logs, SQL dumps, and similar source or operational artifacts. Build that policy from the filenames and extensions used by your deployment process rather than combining every pattern into the dot-file rule. Separate policies make it clear which exception is being evaluated when a legitimate public resource is blocked.
Check for configuration conflicts
- Confirm that
mod_rewriteis available and that the configuration file containing the rule is actually applied to the requested site and directory. - Check whether another rewrite rule runs first and internally maps the request to a different path.
- Ensure that the
.well-knownexception is intentional for your deployment; removing it can break standards-based discovery, while broadening it can expose unrelated dot-files. - Review the server’s error and access logs after a test request. The response alone tells you that access was denied; the log helps identify which rule or mapping produced the result.
IIS: use Request Filtering
Block path segments with Hidden Segments
- In IIS Manager, select the site or directory that should be protected.
- Open Request Filtering.
- Choose Hidden Segments, then select Add Hidden Segment.
- Enter the relative path segment you want IIS to reject, such as
.gitor.svn, and apply the change.
IIS Request Filtering maintains a hiddenSegments collection for URL segments that should be inaccessible. Add each segment that your deployment could expose, and account for nested occurrences. Microsoft’s configuration guidance also documents the equivalent AppCmd and configuration-file approach when changes must be automated or managed outside IIS Manager.

A hidden static file can result in an IIS HTTP 404.9 - Not Found response or an Access Denied message. That behavior is different in appearance from Apache’s forbidden response, but the purpose is the same: the server refuses to return the hidden resource over HTTP.
Control risky extensions with File Extensions
Path filtering does not catch a plainly named file such as settings.inc or a backup with a non-dot filename. In Request Filtering, use the File Name Extensions collection to deny specific extensions. Microsoft’s example denies inc. For a strict allow-list, set allowUnlisted="false" and explicitly allow only the extensions your site serves; test that approach carefully because every legitimate static type must then be listed.
Extension rules and hidden-segment rules solve different problems. A segment policy follows where a name appears in the URL, while an extension policy follows the suffix of the requested file. Use both when your exposure model requires both, and document the reason for every exception.

Use NTFS permissions for identity-based authorization
If the requirement is to permit particular users or application identities rather than the general public, configure NTFS permissions. The IIS application-pool identity must retain read permission for files the application is required to serve. Removing that permission can make the application fail even though the URL filtering rule is correct. Request Filtering is a URL-level exposure control; NTFS is the filesystem authorization layer.

Validate the policy without breaking required files
Test from an HTTP client that is not relying on a local file browser. Use a staging site first, then repeat the checks after deployment. The following sequence covers the important branches:
- Request a representative dot-file such as
/.env. It should be rejected and should not return the file contents. - Request a nested dot-directory resource such as
/.git/configor/project/.svn/entries. This verifies that the rule is not limited to the document root. - Request a permitted discovery resource under
/.well-known/that your service genuinely uses. It should remain reachable when the exception is configured correctly. - Request an ordinary public asset, such as a stylesheet or image. It should continue to return normally.
- Request a non-dot backup or source artifact covered by your separate extension policy, such as a denied
.incfile on IIS. Confirm that the extension rule, rather than the dot-file rule, handles it. - Inspect access and error logs for each request. Confirm that the blocked request is recorded as a filtering or authorization event and that no application route accidentally serves the underlying file.
Do not treat a generic application error page as proof of protection. Follow redirects, check the final status, and verify that the response body does not contain the requested file. Also test URL forms your front end may normalize, including nested paths and trailing slashes.

Troubleshooting common failures
A dot-file is still returned
- The rule may be in a configuration file that is not loaded for the site, or the relevant module or Request Filtering feature may not be active.
- An application rewrite may map the request to a different path before the protection runs. Compare the requested URL with the mapped filesystem path in the logs.
- A proxy, cache, or CDN may be serving an old response. Purge that cache and retest against the origin while investigating.
- The path may not be covered because the rule is installed only in one directory. Move it to a configuration scope that covers every served location or repeat the policy in each required scope.
A legitimate .well-known file is blocked
Check the exception before weakening the entire rule. The Apache pattern exempts a specific .well-known structure, not every URL containing that text. Confirm that the requested resource fits the allowed form, that the file exists at the expected location, and that no separate extension or filesystem rule denies it.
Other static files stop working on IIS
If you set allowUnlisted="false", IIS will deny every extension that is not explicitly allowed. Add the legitimate extensions used by the site, then retest normal assets, rather than removing filtering altogether. If the failure is an Access Denied message for a file the application needs, inspect NTFS permissions and the application-pool identity.
The server returns a different status than expected
Status codes vary by server and by which layer rejected the request. Apache’s [F] rule is intended to forbid access; IIS can report 404.9 or Access Denied for a hidden static file. Evaluate the body, headers, and server logs together instead of assuming that only one status code represents successful blocking.
Operational practices that prevent regressions
- Keep dot-file, backup-artifact, extension, and identity-based policies distinct so a future exception has a narrow effect.
- Review deployment packages for newly introduced dot-directories and source artifacts before publishing them.
- Include direct HTTP requests for a blocked dot-file, a nested dot-directory, a permitted
.well-knownresource, and a normal asset in release validation. - Record intentional exceptions and the owner responsible for reviewing them. An exception that was needed for discovery can become an unintended publication path after a deployment change.
- Use logs to detect repeated requests for sensitive paths. Blocking the response prevents delivery, while the request pattern can still reveal scanning or a misconfigured client.
What this protection does—and does not do
These controls stop direct HTTP retrieval of paths the server is configured to reject. They do not remove secrets from a repository, rotate credentials that were previously exposed, or prevent a separate application endpoint from reading and returning the same data. Remove sensitive files from the public document tree, keep secrets outside deployable web roots where possible, and verify that application routes do not bypass the static-file policy.
The practical rule is straightforward: treat every URL-mappable file as public until an explicit server, filesystem, or application authorization control says otherwise. Configure the narrowest exception required for /.well-known/, test both blocked and allowed paths, and keep user-specific permissions separate from public URL filtering.
