Choose the first set of options during character creation or revise many of them at an in-game Barber Shop. Use the current Transmog system to save equipment appearances in Outfit Slots, then change or automate complete looks without reapplying every item individually.
The choices are not identical for every race or class. Treat the examples below as a map of how the systems work, not as a complete catalog of every option in the game. Blizzard’s current Transmog overview, dated February 12, 2026, describes the updated system as available in Midnight; its behavior is the reference point for the outfit instructions in this guide.

Which customization method should you use?
Start by deciding whether you want to alter the character model or the appearance of equipment. These systems are related visually but are edited in different places and have different costs.

A new haircut cannot change the model of a chest piece, and Transmog cannot give your character a different face. If both need changing, complete the Barber visit and the outfit setup separately.

Choose appearance options during character creation
Character creation is the broadest point for establishing a visual identity. Blizzard’s Shadowlands customization preview describes race-specific controls for skin tones, hairstyles and eye colors, along with additional choices such as tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars and hair ornaments. The important qualification is that these are examples of the system’s design, not a promise that every race displays every control.
Work through the available controls in order
- Select the race first. The race determines which appearance categories and variants the creator can display. Do not plan a look from another race’s screenshots and assume the same controls will appear.
- Set the major features. Choose the available skin tone, hairstyle and eye color before fine details. These categories are common examples, but their names and ranges can differ between races.
- Check the additional-feature panels. Look for controls such as tattoos, jewelry, beards, scars or hair ornaments when the selected race offers them. Some options that were once linked to one another were redesigned so they could be selected independently.
- Preview the result from more than one angle. A feature that is subtle in the front preview can be prominent in profile or under different lighting. Make sure the final combination is intentional before confirming the character.
Creation screens can change as the game is updated. If a control mentioned in an older guide is absent, treat the current in-game menu for your race as authoritative rather than assuming the character is missing a feature.
Change an existing character at the Barber Shop
The Barber Shop is the official route for revising many established-character features. Blizzard’s 2020 Barber Shop update specifically described changes including gender, hair and facial features, and its Shadowlands preview also placed Druid shapeshift appearances at the Barber. The exact menu presented to you is conditional: race-specific options are normal, and later updates can add or rearrange entries.

Barber Shop workflow
- Enter an in-game Barber Shop. Select the Barber interaction to open the customization interface. The shop, not the character-creation screen, is the place to revise an existing character.
- Review each category shown for your character. Check hair, facial features and any other available sections. The presence of a category does not mean every race receives the same choices.
- Preview before accepting. Move through the available variants and inspect the character in the shop preview. For a Druid, check the available shapeshift appearance controls as part of the same visit when they are offered.
- Confirm the change in the Barber interface. Save only after checking that the selected appearance is the one you want. If a desired option is not listed, it is not established as universally available; it may be restricted by race, class or a later update.
Why your menu may differ from a screenshot
Customization has been expanded in stages. Blizzard’s Seeds of Renewal update, for example, mentioned Troll hair colors, a Draenei skin color and additional warlock demon options. The 9.1.5 update discussed further looks for Highmountain Tauren, Lightforged Draenei, Nightborne and Void Elves. Those announcements demonstrate continued race-specific additions; they are not a current, exhaustive menu for every character.
Blizzard also reproduced the player question “Will I be able to customize my face?” in its facial-customization article. The practical answer is yes for the facial controls your race exposes at creation or at the Barber, but the available choices are not universal.

Understand race and class restrictions
Race is the most important filter on appearance options. Two characters of different races can see different skin, hair, jewelry, tattoo, scar or ornament controls even when they are using the same class. A race-specific option should therefore be described as an example, not as a game-wide entitlement.
Class can add another layer. Druid shapeshift appearances are a clear example: the character’s normal face and hair are one set of controls, while forms used during shapeshifting can have their own cosmetic choices. Warlock demon options are another class-linked example mentioned in Blizzard’s update notes.

- When checking a class feature, confirm that you are looking at a class-specific appearance category rather than a normal body or face category.
- Use the current in-game menu for final availability because update posts describe additions at particular points in time, not a permanent promise that every menu remains unchanged.
How the 2026 Transmog system differs from the old approach
Blizzard’s February 12, 2026 article describes an updated Transmog system available in Midnight. Instead of assigning a visual style to one physical item and then having to redo that appearance whenever the item is replaced, you save a look to an Outfit Slot. New equipment placed in that slot inherits the slot’s selected appearance.
This changes the maintenance problem. Replacing a helmet, weapon or other item no longer automatically means rebuilding the same visual set piece by piece, provided the replacement is in the relevant Outfit Slot and the slot still has the intended style.
What happened to older looks?
Blizzard says previously applied transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets. If a familiar older appearance seems to have moved, look for it among Custom Sets rather than assuming it was deleted. The conversion statement does not establish that every historical interface label or every eligibility rule is unchanged.

Create and maintain an Outfit Slot
The names below follow the current system’s concepts. Individual interface placement can change with patches, so use the Transmog or outfit interface’s current labels when the location of a button differs.

- Unlock an Outfit Slot. Blizzard states that unlocking slots costs in-game gold. The official overview does not state a universal gold amount, so do not rely on a number from an older guide or assume every slot has the same price.
- Build the appearance. Select the equipment appearances you want the slot to use. The resulting style belongs to the outfit, not permanently to one particular physical item.
- Save or update the outfit. Updating an outfit’s style also costs gold. Confirm the update only after checking the complete look, because changing one piece can alter the impression of the whole set.
- Equip replacement gear normally. New equipment in that Outfit Slot inherits the selected appearance, eliminating the need to reapply the same look after every replacement.
The source establishes the gold cost categories, but not exact prices. Prices may also depend on the live game’s economy or future updates; check the amount displayed in your client before confirming an unlock or style change.
Switch between saved outfits
Once multiple Outfit Slots are unlocked, changing between those saved looks is free according to Blizzard’s current overview. That is different from unlocking another slot or editing an outfit’s style, both of which cost gold.
Manual switching
- Open the outfit controls and select one of your unlocked outfits.
- Apply the outfit when you want the saved appearance to become active.
- For faster access, add an outfit to an action bar. Blizzard explicitly describes action-bar placement as a way to make manual changes.
Manual switching is useful when you want a deliberate choice—for example, selecting a role-themed look before a group activity—without changing the conditions that govern your other outfits.
Automatic switching by situation
The system can associate outfits with situations. Blizzard’s examples include going to town, entering a dungeon, changing specialization and returning home. Configure the situation options in the outfit interface, select the outfit that should be used for each condition, and save the rule. The game can then change the active appearance when the condition is met.

Use automatic rules for predictable context changes, not for every moment-to-moment decision. If two rules overlap, inspect the interface’s displayed priority or resulting selection rather than assuming which one wins; the official overview confirms the feature but does not enumerate every priority rule.
A practical setup for multiple looks
A useful organization is to give each outfit a clear purpose instead of creating near-duplicates that are difficult to identify.
- Everyday or town look: a relaxed appearance for routine activity and social areas.
- Dungeon or group look: a durable, role-oriented visual assigned to dungeon situations if that matches your play style.
- Specialization look: a style tied to a particular specialization, allowing a visual change when your role changes.
- Home or downtime look: a separate option for returning home or other conditions you want to distinguish.
These labels are organizational suggestions, not additional game categories. The system’s documented examples are situations such as town, dungeon entry, specialization changes and returning home; you decide which of those deserve a dedicated slot.

The reviewed official material does not provide a complete current customization matrix for every race and class, a definitive list of all outfit eligibility rules or exact gold prices. It is safer to read the live menu and its confirmation dialog than to treat an old price or screenshot as permanent.

Troubleshoot common appearance problems
“The hairstyle or tattoo I saw is not available.”
Check the race first. Appearance menus are race-specific, and an option announced for one race does not prove it exists for another. Also check whether the example came from a particular update; later menus can add, rename or reorganize choices.
“My new item does not look like the outfit.”
Confirm that the item was placed in the intended Outfit Slot and that the slot is active. The current system’s inheritance applies to new equipment in the slot; an item managed outside that slot will not necessarily use its appearance.
“I cannot find an old transmog.”
Look in Custom Sets. Blizzard says previously applied transmogs and legacy outfits were converted into Custom Sets, so the older label may no longer be the place to search.
“Switching outfits charged me gold.”
Switching among already unlocked outfits is free. A gold prompt normally indicates that you are unlocking a slot or updating its style rather than merely selecting an existing saved outfit. Read the confirmation action before accepting.
“Automatic switching is not doing what I expect.”
Review the situation assignment for the active outfit and test one condition at a time. The documented system supports manual action-bar changes and situation-based automation, but the official overview does not list every precedence rule. Temporarily remove overlapping assignments if you need to identify which condition is triggering.
Best practices for a stable character wardrobe
- Choose the race before planning a detailed appearance because it controls the available menu.
- Use the Barber for character features and Transmog for equipment; neither system replaces the other.
- Save a complete look to an Outfit Slot instead of rebuilding it after every gear replacement.
- Reserve gold for slots and style revisions, and remember that selecting an already unlocked outfit is free.
- Name or organize outfits by purpose so action-bar buttons and automatic rules remain understandable.
- After a major update, inspect the current menus rather than assuming an older screenshot still describes the live interface.
What to remember
Customize the model at creation or in the Barber Shop, with race and class determining which options appear. Customize equipment through the current Outfit Slot-based Transmog system. Outfit slots preserve a chosen look as gear changes, older transmogs appear as Custom Sets, and saved outfits can be selected manually or assigned to situations such as town, dungeons or specialization changes. Gold is required to unlock slots and update styles, while switching among unlocked outfits costs nothing; exact prices and a universal option list are not established by the current official overview.
