1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a real, currently available handheld gaming PC, released on October 15, 2026, for US$1,299. Its headline upgrade is a 7.4-inch 120Hz OLED display with HDR and variable refresh rate. Shuhei Yoshida, the former President of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, has called it his favorite portable gaming PC. The catch is equally important: the X20’s core performance is broadly unchanged from the US$999 ROG Xbox Ally X, so the premium mainly buys a better screen, revised controls and redesigned cooling rather than a major frame-rate increase.
What Yoshida praised
On October 16, Yoshida posted: “My new favorite portable gaming PC, ROG Xbox Ally X20! A larger, beautiful OLED display is a big upgrade @ASUS_ROG.” His comment is notable because he previously led Sony’s worldwide game studios, but it is a personal endorsement rather than evidence of a benchmark advantage or an official Xbox evaluation.

The screen is the X20’s defining change. ASUS specifies a 7.4-inch Full HD OLED panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, HDR, variable refresh rate, a claimed 0.2ms response time and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. In Tom’s Guide’s early review testing, the X20 averaged 579.8 nits of brightness, compared with 515.8 nits for the LCD screen in the Ally X. That review described the OLED panel as a standout while warning that the overall value is difficult to justify at $1,299.

ROG Xbox Ally X20 versus ROG Xbox Ally X
| Category | ROG Xbox Ally X20 | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|---|
| Listed price | US$1,299 | US$999 |
| Display | 7.4-inch FHD OLED, up to 120Hz, HDR and VRR | LCD display; Tom’s Guide measured 515.8 nits average brightness |
| Processor | AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme | Core power is described as identical to the X20 in PC Gamer’s review |
| Memory | 24GB LPDDR5X | 24GB |
| Storage | 1TB-class SSD | 1TB |
| Controls and grip | TMR joysticks, rubberized grips, revised bumpers and triggers, customizable Xbox controls | Earlier control and grip design |
| Battery | Not stated in the available specifications | 80Wh |
ASUS lists the regular ROG Xbox Ally at $599 and the Ally X at $999, making the X20 a $300 premium over the Ally X. The older model remains the more rational choice if your priority is maximum performance per dollar and you are satisfied with an LCD panel.
Does OLED make the upgrade worthwhile?
Choose the X20 for display quality and handheld feel
OLED delivers per-pixel lighting, deep blacks and high contrast that are especially visible in dark games. The larger 7.4-inch panel also gives menus and subtitles more room than the Ally X’s display. HDR, 120Hz capability and VRR can make motion and brightness transitions look cleaner, although the practical result depends on each game’s frame rate and settings. The revised grips, triggers and joysticks matter if you use the handheld for long sessions or prefer console-style controls.

Keep the Ally X if you expect a generational speed jump
PC Gamer characterized the X20’s core power as identical to the prior Ally X. Its review includes game-specific benchmark results, which should not be generalized to every title or graphics preset. In other words, the X20 is not a new performance tier: the same processor class means the extra $300 is primarily paying for the panel, controls, cooling redesign and anniversary hardware.

Bundle and availability
ASUS also offers a US$2,499 bundle containing the handheld, ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses, a custom Killswitch case and a Pelican Protector Case. The standalone X20 is the relevant option for most buyers; the bundle’s value depends on whether you specifically want those accessories. Availability was announced for October 15, 2026, and launch reviews are early assessments that could change with firmware updates or price changes.
