Where Factorio stores the server name and description
Factorio reads dedicated-server listing settings from a JSON file in the installation’s data directory. Do not edit the example in place. Make a working copy named server-settings.json:

cp data/server-settings.example.json data/server-settings.jsonOn Windows, use File Explorer’s Copy and Paste commands, or copy the file in PowerShell. Keep the working file beside the game’s data directory, or use an absolute path when you start the server. The server will not use your edits merely because the file exists; the startup command must point to it.

Fields that control the server-browser listing
Edit valid JSON: property names and string values require double quotation marks, arrays use square brackets, and the final property must not have a trailing comma. These are the fields most relevant to how your server is presented and who can join.

Build a clear, useful listing
Choose a name players can identify
Set name to the label you want in the browser, such as a community name followed by the map style or region. Avoid putting passwords, account details or temporary administrative notes in the name; it is public when the server is publicly listed.
Use the description as a pre-join checklist
The 5,000-character limit leaves room for practical information, but a concise description is easier to scan. A useful order is:
- Whether the map is vanilla, modded or intended for a particular scenario.
- The usual playing hours and time zone.
- Rules such as no griefing, cooperative building or required voice-chat etiquette.
- Whether the map is beginner-friendly and what level of automation has already been completed.
- How to contact an administrator and whether a join password is required.
Do not put a real token or account password in this field. The description is intended for players reading the listing, not for secret configuration.

Use tags consistently
Tags are represented as a JSON array. Keep them descriptive and stable so players can understand the server at a glance. For example, use separate entries for play style, experience level and rules rather than one long sentence in a single tag.
Set public, LAN or hidden visibility

You can enable both public and LAN publication when you want local players to discover the same game while it is also listed online. If you are testing privately, disable both before starting the server so an unfinished map does not appear to strangers.

}The values are examples. Replace the login, token and join password with your own values before use. Never publish a real token in a repository, screenshot or tutorial. If your installation uses username/password authentication instead of a token, configure the credential fields supported by your Factorio version and protect the file with the operating system’s file permissions.

Start or restart the server with the edited file
A dedicated Factorio server needs a save file. To load the newest save in the installation’s saves directory, run:
./bin/x64/factorio --start-server-load-latest --server-settings ./data/server-settings.jsonTo select a specific save, use its filename instead:
./bin/x64/factorio --start-server ./saves/my-save.zip --server-settings ./data/server-settings.json- Stop the running server cleanly so it finishes saving the map.
- Back up the current
server-settings.json. - Edit and save the JSON file.
- Start the server with
--server-settingspointing to that file. - Open the server browser or connect as a player and verify the name, description, tags, visibility and join behavior.
If you change listing fields while the server is already running, restart it with the updated file. A text editor changing the file on disk does not automatically reload the running process.
Networking requirements for an internet server
Factorio uses UDP for game traffic. The Factorio Wiki identifies UDP port 34197 as the default. Internet hosting normally requires forwarding that UDP port from your router to the server machine and allowing it through the machine’s firewall. The port can be changed when your network layout requires it.

If another service already uses the default, choose a different port and make the same value available in your router, firewall and server startup configuration. Players must use the resulting address and port when connecting directly. A correctly edited name or description cannot compensate for a blocked port: the listing may be absent, or players may see it but fail to join.
Command-line controls beyond the listing
The settings file handles the identity and access policy, while the command-line reference provides additional operator controls. Depending on your setup, you may need:
--portto select the UDP game port.--bindto choose the local network address on which the server listens.--rcon-portand--rcon-passwordfor remote console administration.--server-whitelistand--server-banlistfor allow and deny lists.--server-adminlistfor administrator permissions.
These switches do not replace the listing fields. For example, changing an RCON port will not change the browser name, and changing the description will not open a firewall port.

The example file also contains operational options such as auto_pause and autosave_interval. They control how the simulation pauses or saves; they are not browser-facing profile text. Keep these concerns separate:

- Use
name,description,tags, visibility and player-limit fields to describe and expose the server. - Use
auto_pause,autosave_intervaland related keys to control server behavior. - Use startup switches and network configuration for ports, binding and administrative interfaces.
Separating these categories makes troubleshooting faster: a wrong description is a JSON or file-selection problem, while lag, save frequency or pause behavior usually belongs to runtime settings.
Security practices for credentials and passwords
Protect the settings file
server-settings.json is plain text. Restrict read access to the account that runs the server, keep backups private and exclude the file from public repositories. If a token is exposed, revoke or replace it through the account that issued it, then update the server file and restart.
Keep the two password roles distinct
game_password is what players enter to join. The username/password or token fields authenticate the server for public matching-server publication. Do not give players listing credentials merely because they need the game password.
Use account verification deliberately
With require_user_verification set to true, clients must have a valid Factorio.com account to join. This can reduce anonymous access, but it also prevents players without a valid account from entering even if they know the game password.
Troubleshooting checklist
The old name or description still appears
- Confirm the edited file is the same path supplied after
--server-settings. - Check that the server was stopped and restarted after saving the file.
- Verify that you did not edit
server-settings.example.jsonwhile the server loadsserver-settings.json.
The server does not start after editing
- Validate JSON syntax: unmatched braces, missing quotation marks and trailing commas are common causes.
- Restore the backup, then reapply one change at a time to identify the invalid entry.
- Make sure the command includes a real save file, either through
--start-server-load-latestor--start-server ./saves/my-save.zip.
The server is not visible publicly
- Check that
visibility.publicistrue. - Confirm that the listing credentials or token are present and current.
- Ensure the UDP port is forwarded and permitted by the firewall.
- If you intended LAN-only play, check
visibility.laninstead; LAN publication does not create a public listing.
Players see the server but cannot join
- Verify the UDP port and router forwarding point to the correct machine.
- Check the game password and whether account verification is enabled.
- Confirm that
max_playershas not been reached. A value of0means unlimited in the template; any positive value is a simultaneous-player cap.
Self-managed files versus managed hosting
With a self-managed installation, you edit the JSON and control the process, operating-system permissions, firewall, router and command-line switches. A managed Factorio host typically exposes the same server-settings concepts through a control panel, but exact labels and available command-line options vary by provider. Choose self-management when you need direct control over ports, RCON, allowlists, bans, admin lists and file backups. Choose managed hosting when you prefer the provider to handle machine and network administration, while still checking that the panel exposes the name, description, tags, visibility, player limit and credential settings your community requires.

A practical pre-launch checklist
- File: You copied the example to
data/server-settings.jsonand the startup command points to that copy. - JSON: The file parses without syntax errors.
- Listing: Name, description and tags accurately describe the current map.
- Capacity:
max_playersmatches your intended player count, or is0for unlimited behavior from the template. - Visibility: Public, LAN or hidden mode matches your audience.
- Access: Public-listing credentials, game password and account-verification policy are intentional.
- Network: UDP 34197, or your chosen replacement port, is forwarded and allowed through the firewall.
- Save: The launch command names a valid save file.
- Privacy: No real token or password appears in the description, screenshots, documentation or a public repository.
