If you reach the nearby boat and encounter a creature hurling objects, that is a Poltergeist—and in that early area, you can avoid fighting it.
First identify the enemy
“Invisible enemy” can mean two different mutants in the early game. The Bloodsucker rushes you and briefly becomes visible; the Poltergeist attacks from a distance by throwing nearby objects. Telling them apart matters: the Bloodsucker encounter is a fight, while the Poltergeist in the early boat area can be bypassed.

How to fight the Bloodsucker
- Listen and keep moving. Track its movement and growls rather than firing at empty space while it is cloaked.
- Wait for the attack. When it rushes close and starts to strike, move or dodge clear of the hit.
- Fire during the reveal. Shoot when its body becomes visible, then be ready to repeat the cycle when it vanishes again.
- Use the lab entrance if you are struggling. Retreat into the lab building to narrow the directions from which it can approach, making it easier to watch for its rush.
- Heal when needed. Pure Xbox describes repeated attacks during visible openings, with healing as necessary, as a way to defeat it on the game’s normal “Stalker” difficulty. That is guide advice, not a guarantee for every difficulty, weapon, patch, or player.
Avoid wasting ammunition on blind shots: the useful opening is short, so let the mutant come into view before attacking. The tactic is described in guides by Pure Xbox and Game8.
How to handle the early Poltergeist
The Poltergeist stays hidden much of the time and attacks by launching objects. Use the static and its visible orb or dusty outline as cues, keep clear of incoming objects, and fire only when it becomes visible if you choose to fight.

In the early boat-area encounter, fighting is difficult and not necessary according to Game8’s guide. To bypass that encounter, enter the boat using the small ladder, crouch through the opening, and disable the radio inside. This is a route for that specific encounter, not a universal way to stop Poltergeists.

- Bloodsucker: Fight when you can track its approach and use its reveal window; fall back toward the lab entrance if you need a more controlled approach.
- Early boat Poltergeist: Bypass it if the objective allows and you want to conserve health or ammunition.
- Later Poltergeist: In the abandoned communication hub on Richter’s path during Behind Seven Seals, you can fight or avoid the creature while searching for information, according to Prima Games.
The guides describing these encounters were published in November 2024. Their tactics are not verified here for every later game update, so treat details such as difficulty-specific combat advice as guidance rather than a guarantee.
