Mute or change chat settings for immediate relief; leave the match if the interaction is escalating. For serious or repeated abuse, save evidence when you can, report the player through the game or platform, and block them. You do not have to confront someone or stay in a hostile session.
What to do when a player turns toxic
- Stop the immediate exposure. Mute the player, disable or adjust voice or text chat, or leave the session if that feels safer. The Australian eSafety Commissioner recommends changing settings or taking a break when gaming interactions get out of hand. eSafety’s online gaming guidance explains these options.
- Decide whether to respond. If you feel safe and want to, you can tell the person their behavior is unacceptable and ask them to stop. You are not required to argue, educate them, or respond at all; disengaging is often the simpler choice.
- Preserve evidence if the abuse is serious. Where practical, capture screenshots or recordings and note the game, platform, and relevant context. Do this only if it does not prolong an unsafe interaction. Some games let you attach evidence to a report or capture session material through the reporting process.
- Report the conduct, then block the player. Use the game’s or platform’s report function and select the closest accurate category. Blocking helps limit future contact; reporting asks the service to review the behavior. The available controls vary by game, platform, and version.
- Get support if the experience is affecting you. Tell someone you trust. If you are in Australia and aged 5–25, eSafety lists Kids Helpline as a support option; elsewhere, look for a confidential service in your country.
Choose the response that fits the situation

The order can depend on the game’s reporting workflow. If a report tool captures session evidence automatically, use the in-game flow; if it accepts attachments, save evidence first when that is safe and practical.
How reporting works on some gaming platforms
These are examples, not universal menu instructions. Check the current help page for your game, console, or PC service because controls and steps can differ.
Steam
Steam Support’s guidance on abuse and misconduct describes options to block communications and report content. If a player threatens your personal safety, Steam advises contacting local emergency or law-enforcement services.

Epic Games titles
Epic Games Safety’s reporting guidance covers blocking, muting, and reporting. It also describes submitting voice evidence for reports in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys; Fortnite supports text evidence as well.
Battlefield 6
EA’s Battlefield 6 instructions describe an in-game reporting route. EA says its support team automatically receives a recording of the session selected for a report. That recording process is specific to Battlefield 6, not a general feature of every game.

GTA Online
Rockstar’s PC instructions and Xbox instructions show that the available reporting and blocking controls depend on platform; the guidance includes platform tools as well as in-game reporting steps. Rockstar’s pages were last updated February 24, 2026. Check the relevant instructions for your platform, including PlayStation, rather than assuming the PC or Xbox steps apply.

If someone makes a credible threat to your personal safety, treat it as more than ordinary match toxicity. Stop engaging and contact the appropriate local emergency or law-enforcement service. The right service depends on where you live; Steam and Rockstar both direct players to local authorities when personal safety is threatened. For non-emergency support, talk with someone you trust or contact a suitable local support service.
