An $80 game is worth buying when its likely experience fits what you want, its price is acceptable compared with your real alternatives, and you are comfortable with the risk that reviews or estimated playtime may not predict your own enjoyment. There is no universal hours-per-dollar cutoff. Because no game, platform, edition, retailer, or country is specified here, the decision framework below can help you evaluate a listing—but cannot deliver a verdict on one particular game.
Start with the experience you want
Before weighing the price, name what you hope to get from the purchase: a particular kind of story, a demanding challenge, a world to explore, accessibility features, or time playing with friends. Those priorities shape value more than a generic playtime target. A short game may be a good purchase if it delivers the experience you want; a long one may not be if its repeated activities or systems do not appeal to you.
Also consider how soon you want to play. If friends are starting together or you are especially eager to avoid spoilers, buying now may have value that waiting for a lower price does not. If you have other games you would happily play first, waiting may be easier.
Estimate what you are likely to get, not what is promised
Read more than one review or preview, looking for details that match your interests rather than relying only on a score. Check what sources say about campaign length, optional activities, replayability, online population, accessibility, and technical condition. Note which platform was reviewed and whether the coverage predates important patches. A completion-time estimate or one reviewer’s playtime is a clue, not a promise about your experience.

- Check whether reported performance or technical problems apply to your platform and current version.
Use price per expected hour as a comparison, not a verdict
You can divide the price by your estimated playtime to compare games that offer similar kinds of enjoyment. For example, if you expect to play an $80 game for 20 hours, that works out to $4 per expected hour. That calculation is only a rough aid: it treats every hour as equally valuable and does not account for how much you enjoy the experience.
A November 4, 2025 working paper by Imke Reimers, Christoph Riedl, and Joel Waldfogel analyzed Steam data covering 50,000 consumers and 100 games. In that dataset, the authors report that 7,407 of 59,139 observed reviews for owned user-game combinations—12.5%—were “not recommended.” They also found an association between lower playtime per dollar spent and a greater likelihood of a negative recommendation. This is evidence from a particular Steam sample, not proof that hours alone cause satisfaction or regret, and it does not predict whether an unnamed game is worth $80. Read the working paper.

Compare the actual options for the same game
Check the current listing for the edition and platform you intend to buy, then compare it with other legitimate offers. Make sure a lower price is not for a different edition, platform, or format, and compare what each edition includes. If you are deciding between physical and digital, consider availability and the practical difference to you as well as price.
Nintendo’s guidance is specific to Switch 2: packaged and digital Nintendo games offer the same experience, but prices may differ by format and retailer. Nintendo also says that for new Nintendo-published digital titles exclusive to Switch 2 beginning with May 2026 preorders, MSRP may differ from physical versions; retail partners set their own prices, and title pricing can vary. This is not a general rule for other platforms, publishers, or stores. See Nintendo’s Switch 2 pricing guidance.

Check the refund or return terms before checkout
Do not assume that buying a game gives you a no-questions-asked trial. Storefront policies differ, and eligibility can depend on region, download or streaming status, playtime, product marking, exceptions, and local law. Check the current terms for the exact store and purchase before paying.
- Steam: Valve says a title is eligible for a refund when requested within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours, subject to exclusions and details on its refund support page.
- Epic Games Store: For PC and Mac, Epic says products marked “refundable” or “self-refundable” are generally eligible within 14 days if runtime is under two hours. Check the product marking and Epic’s policy and exceptions.
- PlayStation Store, United States: Sony says a game can be canceled within 14 days if downloading or streaming has not started. Once it has started, the game generally is not eligible unless faulty. Regional rules and local law can affect rights; consult the current U.S. refund terms.
Choose a personal price ceiling
Ask yourself how you would feel if the game turned out to be merely okay, or if you played less than expected. If paying $80 would feel like a loss you are not comfortable with, wait, wishlist it, or choose an alternative you value more. If you are confident the experience is right for you and the price fits your budget, buying now may be reasonable even if another player would set a lower ceiling.
