To beat Everdark Sovereign Caligo, prepare to resist Frostbite, bring fire damage if available, and treat the ice armor that appears during the fight as a new priority. Stay near Caligo’s head when it is safe, but move out of dangerous frost effects and use Surge Sprint to escape breath attacks. If your expedition includes the Shifting Earth: Mountaintop event, its reported Frostbite and anti-dragon benefits can help; those options are not available in Deep of Night runs.
Prepare for Frostbite and use the damage options available to you
Caligo’s ice crystals and frost attacks can build Frostbite quickly, so survivability and damage should be planned together. The following recommendations come from published boss guides, not official boss specifications.

| Fire damage | Both PC Gamer and Windows Central identify fire as useful against Caligo. Consider a fire weapon, fire affinity, or a relevant damage buff. | Use what your expedition offers; neither guide establishes a mandatory weapon or build. |
| Bleed | Windows Central reports that Caligo is susceptible to bleed. | An additional damage option, not a requirement. |
| Dragon-damage effects | Windows Central names Dragonwound Grease and the Mountaintop anti-dragon effect as ways to increase damage. | The Mountaintop effect depends on having access to that Shifting Earth event. |
| Mountaintop Frostbite preparation | PC Gamer reports that Favor of the Mountaintop halves Frostbite damage and buildup. | Shifting Earth states do not apply in Deep of Night, according to Bandai Namco’s Deep of Night overview. |
When the Mountaintop event is available
PC Gamer’s guide describes several ways to prepare in the Shifting Earth: Mountaintop event:
- Defeat the Flying Dragon and select the anti-dragon attack effect.
- Defeat Snow Trolls or a Demi-Human Swordsman for improved Frostbite resistance.
- Collect the northern blue crystal to obtain Favor of the Mountaintop, which the guide says halves Frostbite damage and buildup.
- The guide also reports that the Collector Signboard can activate Mountaintop for one Sovereign Sigil, with the effect lasting three runs.
These are reported in-game routes, not a promise that Mountaintop will appear in every expedition. Do not plan around this preparation in Deep of Night: Bandai Namco says Shifting Earth states are inactive in that mode.

Read the fight in two parts
Before the ice armor
PC Gamer reports that the Sovereign encounter begins with Caligo’s regular phase-two pattern. Windows Central recommends staying near the head when possible, where attacks may be easier to read, and avoiding extended time beneath the body, where tells are harder to see. Dodge the claws and use Surge Sprint to get clear of breath attacks.
Ice crystals can rapidly build Frostbite. When crystals or frost make the head area unsafe, prioritize escaping the hazard over maintaining damage uptime. Windows Central describes two different responses to arena-wide cues: move far from the black-wind convergence before its wave, but move toward Caligo when crackling ice signals a different attack. Read the cue rather than treating every broad effect the same way.
At around three-quarters health: break the armor
PC Gamer reports that at about 75% health Caligo forms ice armor, increasing its resistance and beginning the Sovereign’s new phase. The guide says striking the armored head, torso, and tail can break those sections, deal damage, and cause a stun. Treat the percentage and armor-breaking behavior as reported guide information, rather than an official threshold specification.
During this phase, the guide identifies missile-like icicles, a crystal explosion that sends out an expanding frost wave, frequent breath attacks, a crystal tail slam, and an ice-armor charge that leaves a lingering frost area. Dodge the icicles individually, move away from the expanding wave, and do not rush back into the path of the charge while its frost remains. Take openings to attack armor sections when the immediate hazard has passed.

Adjust for the expedition mode
Standard expeditions
If the Shifting Earth: Mountaintop event is part of the expedition, its reported Frostbite resistance and anti-dragon options can support the fight. The event itself is situational, so use the fire, bleed, or other suitable options you can actually bring rather than assuming one preparation route will be available.
Deep of Night
Bandai Namco’s Deep of Night overview says Shifting Earth states do not apply during Deep of Night runs and that an Everdark Sovereign may appear on day three. That means Mountaintop-specific preparation cannot be assumed in this mode; focus on the defensive and damage options available in the run.
What is established about Everdark Sovereign rules and patches
Bandai Namco’s June 18, 2025 announcement described Everdark Sovereigns as stronger, more challenging Nightlord encounters with new moves and increased power. It said players could face a Sovereign after defeating that Nightlord’s original form, described the encounters as online-only at that time, and listed Sovereign Sigils for victories plus an additional reward for a first victory. The announcement also described a rotating, limited-time schedule; its historical dates should not be read as a current schedule.
Bandai Namco’s August 12, 2025 version 1.02.1 patch notes document a fix for a bug that caused some Everdark Sovereign Caligo attacks to miss playable characters, as well as a frame-rate fix for Caligo battles under certain conditions. Those notes establish the listed fixes, not the full balance state after that patch.
