The safest plan is to learn which attack is coming, move out of the dangerous ghostflame area when you need space, and punish the recovery rather than staying in to force damage. You can fight on foot or use Torrent to approach and disengage; neither Torrent nor Spirit Ashes is required.
The expansion is required to reach these encounters. There are Ghostflame Dragons in Gravesite Plain, Scadu Altus, and Cerulean Coast.

Where to find the Ghostflame Dragons
Gravesite Plain
The first encounter is by a small lake west of the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace, and northwest of the Scorched Ruins. The dragon may be curled up and difficult to distinguish from the surroundings. A Great Katana is also found by this lake. Prima Games describes the location and nearby weapon.

EIP Gaming lists another encounter near Moorth Ruins. Messmer Soldiers can join the fight, so you may need to manage them as well as the dragon.
Cerulean Coast
The Cerulean Coast encounter can involve Skeletal Warriors summoned during the fight. These added enemies make it harder to focus exclusively on the boss. EIP Gaming lists all three locations and their encounter complications.
Choose a position before attacking
On foot, stay close enough to read the dragon’s head and body. You can work around its legs or target its head when an opening appears. Leg-focused fighting offers chances to hit the feet and belly, but you must watch for stomps and tail responses. Attacking the head may create better stagger opportunities and make some stomps easier to read, but puts you in range of bites. Shorter-reach weapons may be more practical against the legs; your weapon’s reach and your comfort reading the moves matter.
GamesRadar recommends fighting close beneath the dragon and punishing its feet, belly, and occasional head openings. EIP Gaming discusses both leg- and head-focused approaches. If using Torrent, take advantage of the mount to approach or retreat, then consider dismounting for close-range control; GamesRadar recommends fighting on foot once engaged.

Read the ghostflame attacks and respond to each one
Raised foot: Ghostflame Stomp
When the dragon raises a foot, expect a stomp that can damage you around the landing and leave a dangerous ghostflame area. If you are not confident in your timing, move away from the raised-foot side early, then dodge the landing. This gives you more distance but may cost you a chance to attack immediately.
Alternatively, you can roll toward or through the foot as it comes down. EIP Gaming notes that this can evade both the hit and flame, while GamesRadar recommends rolling into the radial stomp. It is a tighter-timing option, not a guaranteed safe answer: use it only when you can read the landing and commit to the roll.
Breath or spray
For a ghostflame breath or spray, identify whether the attack is sweeping toward your position and whether you are mounted. EIP Gaming recommends using Torrent to get clear, then returning when the breath ends. On foot, GamesRadar advises moving toward or through some fire attacks rather than simply retreating, but that approach depends on the specific animation and timing. Do not treat every flame attack as the same move.
Roar and ground-spreading flame
When the dragon roars and arches its body before releasing flame across the ground, prioritize leaving the area. EIP Gaming recommends running or riding away from the release. Once the ground flame has passed, close the distance again rather than trying to trade damage through it.

Punish recovery, not the attack itself
After a stomp, breath, or other committed attack finishes, use the recovery to land a small number of hits and reposition. EIP Gaming recommends jumping or using overhead attacks against the head after an attack, and charged heavy attacks when the head is lowered. If you are staying by the legs, use the time after a missed or completed attack to strike the feet or belly, then reset before the next tell. Avoid extending a combo if the dragon is already beginning another move.
Use help if it suits your approach
Spirit Ashes are available and can draw the dragon’s attention, giving you opportunities to attack from another angle. Torrent can help you reach the fight or disengage from breath and ground flame. These are options rather than requirements; fighting on foot without a summon is also viable.

EIP Gaming reports a Dragon Heart and Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone for each location. Its 2024 guide lists these location-specific rune rewards:

Is the Ghostflame Dragon weak to a particular element?
The reviewed guides do not establish a reliable elemental weakness. GamesRadar says its author had not extensively tested weaknesses and saw little effect from attempted frost, fire, and holy damage. A Neoseeker search result says the boss is weak to holy, but that claim could not be verified in the page itself. Treat holy weakness as unconfirmed rather than building your strategy around it.
Prima Games discusses frost and frostbite advice, but that does not establish a definitive elemental weakness. The most dependable advice in the cited guides is to manage the attack pattern and exploit recovery openings.
