Keep Grym Superheated, lure it onto the Adamantine Forge’s central anvil, then pull the hammer lever. The forge hammer deals heavy bludgeoning damage and knocks Grym prone; because the strike removes Superheated, you must restore the lava and lure Grym back before using it again.
Why the forge hammer works
Grym is vulnerable to damage when lava applies the Superheated condition. Without it, Grym resists or is immune to the damage this strategy relies on. While Superheated, Grym is vulnerable to bludgeoning damage, so the forge hammer’s documented 12d8 bludgeoning strike is doubled. The hammer also knocks Grym prone. These mechanics are documented in the community-maintained BG3 Wiki’s Grym guide.

The important limitation is that a hammer strike removes Superheated. You cannot simply pull the lever repeatedly: lava must cover the forge floor again, and Grym must be positioned on the anvil for the next hit.

How to defeat Grym with the hammer
- Lower the forge platform. Use the forge lever to lower the platform into position. The Adamantine Forge location guide explains the forge sequence and its controls.
- Plan who will operate the controls. Identify the lava valve and hammer lever. If possible, position party members or summons where they can reach the controls without standing beside Grym.
- Open the lava valve. The first activation summons Grym and fills the forge area with lava, applying Superheated. Keep track of when lava recedes; the BG3 Wiki says it lasts two turns.
- Steer Grym onto the central anvil. Grym pursues the character designated as its Prime Target. Attack it to draw its attention, then position that character so Grym has to move toward the anvil. If you have Minor Illusion, casting it at the far side of the anvil can help draw Grym into the hammer’s strike zone.
- Pull the hammer lever when Grym is on the anvil and Superheated. The hammer hits for the documented 12d8 bludgeoning damage, doubled by Grym’s vulnerability while Superheated, and knocks it prone. The guide notes that one of Grym’s legs on the pedestal can be enough for a hit to connect; treat that as a documented positioning detail, not a guarantee for every game version.
- Repeat after restoring lava. Once the hammer removes Superheated, open the lava valve again as needed, lure Grym back onto the anvil, and strike again. Watch the turn order so the lava does not recede before Grym is in position.
Prepare for the fight
- Expect possible Magma Mephits. They may appear after Grym takes enough damage, including during a hammer-based fight; the hammer is not the only trigger. Fire resistance can help against this threat.
- Keep the control plan simple. The core method uses the forge’s own valve, anvil, and hammer. No special purchased equipment is required.
- Be cautious with patch-specific timing tricks. The BG3 Wiki reports that, as of Hotfix 6, there was no cooldown on reapplying Superheated, which could allow multiple hammer strikes in one turn under particular positioning and action conditions. That is version-sensitive; do not rely on it unless it works in your installed build.
If you do not want to use the hammer
Two alternatives documented by the BG3 Wiki are ranged attacks from terrain Grym cannot reach and conventional bludgeoning attacks while keeping Grym Superheated. Ranged attacks can be safer, but are slower and still require someone to manage the lava valve. Direct combat avoids the hammer but asks the party to stay engaged with Grym. The wiki also describes throwing water from a height to deal bludgeoning damage; that is a specialized tactic, not a required or universally easier solution.

If earning an achievement for killing Grym without the forge hammer matters to you, choose one of those alternatives rather than using the lever. The hammer method is the direct route when your priority is exploiting the forge encounter itself.
Where the encounter fits in the forge sequence
The Adamantine Forge is in Grymforge in Act One. Crafting involves placing Mithral Ore and a mould, lowering the platform, opening the lava valve, and operating the hammer; the valve’s first use brings Grym into the encounter.
