Deploying Meteor on a VPS means turning the project into a plain Node.js bundle, rebuilding its native dependencies on the target server, running Node privately, and placing Nginx at the public HTTP and HTTPS edge. The reliable production path is:

  1. Prepare a supported 64-bit Linux VPS and the Node.js version required by your Meteor release.
  2. Build for the VPS architecture with meteor build.
  3. Run (cd programs/server && npm install) on the VPS.
  4. Start the app with ROOT_URL, PORT, and MONGO_URL.
  5. Proxy the internal port through Nginx, including WebSocket upgrade headers.
  6. Use a properly secured MongoDB deployment and promote the same tested build from staging to production.

This approach gives you control over the operating system and proxy, but you also own patching, TLS, monitoring, backups, failover, and process supervision. If you do not want that operational burden, Galaxy Cloud is Meteor’s managed alternative.

What the deployment actually contains

A Meteor project is not copied to a server and launched with the Meteor development tool. The production build creates a compressed bundle containing a server-side Node.js application and the client assets it serves. After extraction, the entry point is normally main.js inside the bundle. The Meteor tool is not required at runtime.

The finished topology has four layers:

  • DNS: your hostname resolves to the VPS address.
  • Nginx: accepts public HTTP/HTTPS traffic, terminates TLS, and forwards requests to the private Node listener.
  • Meteor’s Node process: listens on an internal port such as 3000; it should not be exposed directly to the internet.
  • MongoDB: stores application data and must be reachable from the VPS through an authenticated, encrypted connection where appropriate.

Keeping Node on loopback and making Nginx the public endpoint gives you one place to manage certificates, redirects, request limits, access logs, and WebSocket proxying.

Prepare the VPS before building

Choose a supported server platform

Create a 64-bit Linux VPS that matches the architecture you will target in the build. Install security updates, create a non-root administrative account, configure a firewall, and reserve a hostname for the application. The exact package commands differ by distribution, so use the distribution’s supported repositories rather than copying commands intended for another release.

Install Nginx and the Node.js version required by the Meteor release used by your project. Meteor’s documentation warns: “If you use a mis-matched version of Node when deploying your application, you will encounter errors!” Check the version reported by meteor node -v in the project environment and compare it with the generated .node_version.txt file when available. Install that major version on the VPS; do not assume the newest Node release is compatible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan the network and secrets

Decide the public URL before building. The value will become ROOT_URL, for example https://your-app.example. Decide which internal port Node will use, such as 3000, and ensure Nginx is the only service listening publicly on ports 80 and 443. Store the MongoDB URI and any other credentials in a protected environment file or secret-management system, not in source control.

Point DNS at the VPS

Create an A record for the application hostname pointing to the VPS address. If you use IPv6, add an AAAA record only when the VPS, firewall, Nginx listener, and upstream connectivity are all configured for IPv6. DNS changes can take time to propagate; verify resolution from a separate network before troubleshooting Nginx.

Build a production bundle for the target architecture

Install project dependencies and build

Run these commands from the project source tree on a development or build machine:

meteor build /path/to/build --architecture os.linux.x86_64

The architecture flag must match the VPS. A 64-bit x86 Linux server uses os.linux.x86_64; building for a different operating system or CPU family can make the bundle unusable. The command writes a compressed archive to the destination you specify. Transfer that archive to the VPS using a secure mechanism, then verify its checksum if your release process publishes one.

Why you should not copy your development node_modules

Meteor bundles can contain native C or C++ addons. A dependency installed on macOS, Windows, or another CPU architecture may include binaries that Linux cannot load. Build or extract the application on the server and run the server-side installation step there. Otherwise Node can fail with an invalid ELF header error or a similar native-module loading error.

Install the bundle on the VPS

Extract and rebuild native dependencies

Place the archive in a release directory, extract it, and identify the directory containing main.js. From that directory run:

cd my_build_bundle_directory
(cd programs/server && npm install)

This command installs the dependencies declared for the server portion and rebuilds native addons for the operating system and CPU architecture that will run the application. It is required even when dependencies were installed during the build on another machine.

Use immutable release directories

For repeatable rollouts, extract each build into a versioned directory such as /srv/meteor/releases/2026-10-15-01 and point a stable symlink such as /srv/meteor/current at the active release. Install dependencies before changing the symlink. This lets you test a new release and roll back by repointing the symlink if the previous directory remains intact.

Start Meteor privately with the required environment variables

Set ROOT_URL, PORT, and MONGO_URL correctly

These variables have distinct jobs:

  • ROOT_URL is the externally visible base URL, including the scheme. If users reach the app at https://your-app.example, use that exact value rather than an internal hostname or port.
  • PORT is the local port on which Node listens. Use an internal value such as 3000; Nginx will publish the application through ports 80 and 443.
  • MONGO_URL is the complete MongoDB connection URI, including the database name and any options required by your provider.

A minimal manual launch looks like this:

MONGO_URL=mongodb://db-host:27017/myapp
ROOT_URL=https://your-app.example
PORT=3000
node main.js

Use an authenticated MongoDB URI for production. If the URI contains shell-sensitive characters, put it in a protected environment file or configure it through your process supervisor rather than pasting it into a command history.

Keep the process running with a supervisor

A terminal session is not a production supervisor. Use the service manager supported by your Linux distribution, or another maintained process supervisor, so the app starts after a reboot, restarts after an unexpected exit, and writes logs to a location you monitor.

With a systemd-based distribution, create a service unit that runs the bundle’s main.js and supplies the three variables. A representative unit is:

[Unit]
Description=Meteor application
After=network.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=meteor
WorkingDirectory=/srv/meteor/current
Environment=ROOT_URL=https://your-app.example
Environment=PORT=3000
EnvironmentFile=/etc/meteor/myapp.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/node /srv/meteor/current/main.js
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Put MONGO_URL and other secrets in the root-readable environment file referenced above, restrict its permissions, then reload systemd, enable the service, and start it. The exact commands depend on your distribution and installation paths. Confirm that the service is listening on 127.0.0.1:3000 before exposing Nginx. Never grant the application account more filesystem or administrative access than it needs.

Configure Nginx as the reverse proxy

Proxy HTTP requests and WebSockets

Meteor uses a WebSocket-based connection for live updates. Nginx must preserve HTTP/1.1 and pass the connection-upgrade headers; otherwise the initial page may load while live data, hot code push, or subscriptions fail.

A suitable server block pattern is:

map $http_upgrade $connection_upgrade {
    default upgrade;
    ''      close;
}

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name your-app.example;

    location / {
        proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:3000;
        proxy_http_version 1.1;
        proxy_set_header Host $host;
        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
        proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
        proxy_set_header Connection $connection_upgrade;
    }
}

Place the map directive in the Nginx HTTP context, not inside a server block. Adjust file locations and include conventions for your distribution. The proxy headers allow the application and logs to understand the original host, client address, scheme, and upgrade request.

Validate before reloading

  1. Run nginx -t and correct every syntax error.
  2. Reload Nginx using the service command provided by your distribution.
  3. Request the hostname over HTTP and verify that Nginx reaches the Node process.
  4. Test the HTTPS endpoint after TLS is enabled.
  5. Use browser developer tools or application logs to confirm that the WebSocket connection changes to an open state and remains stable during navigation and data updates.

If Nginx returns 502, inspect the service status and logs first. A 502 usually means Node is stopped, listening on another port or address, or blocked by a local policy. If ordinary pages work but real-time behavior does not, check the upgrade directives and whether another proxy layer is stripping them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add HTTPS and enforce the public endpoint

Use a certificate tool supported by your Linux distribution and certificate authority. Configure Nginx to listen on 443 with the certificate, keep the WebSocket proxy settings in the TLS server block, and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS once the secure endpoint works. Set ROOT_URL to the HTTPS URL after the certificate is active. Do not leave an internal port exposed as an alternative public route; clients should use the hostname that matches the certificate and ROOT_URL.

Choose and secure MongoDB

Check compatibility before connecting

The database must support the MongoDB version required by your Meteor release and application dependencies. Confirm that your chosen deployment provides the replica-set and oplog behavior your application needs, along with monitoring, alerting, backups, access control, and encryption options. Hosted MongoDB is often simpler operationally because these capabilities are packaged into the service, but you still must configure users, network rules, backup retention, and alert destinations.

Restrict network access

Allow connections only from the VPS address or private network used by the application. Use a database user limited to the application’s database, rotate credentials, and avoid placing a database listener on an unrestricted public interface. Encrypt connections in transit when your deployment supports it and enable encryption at rest where required by your risk model or regulations.

Keep app and database close

Place the database in the same region as the VPS when possible. Shorter network paths generally reduce latency and make intermittent connectivity less likely. Do not treat geographic proximity as a substitute for backups, failover planning, or monitoring; it is one design choice in addition to those controls.

Release through staging, then promote the identical build

  1. Build a uniquely identified bundle and record its source revision, Meteor release, Node version, and architecture.
  2. Deploy it to a staging VPS using the same extraction, native-dependency installation, process-supervisor, Nginx, and database steps used in production.
  3. Run QA against page loads, sign-in, writes, subscriptions, file handling, scheduled jobs, and WebSocket reconnect behavior.
  4. Review application, Nginx, system, and database logs; check alerts and backup status.
  5. Promote that exact tested bundle to production rather than rebuilding from a moving source tree.
  6. Keep the previous release available until health checks and user smoke tests pass, then remove old releases according to your retention policy.

The --production flag is a build optimization setting, not a replacement for staging, QA, supervision, TLS, backups, or a production release process.

Deployment choices compared

Option Operational burden Best fit Trade-offs
VPS, Nginx, and a custom bundle Highest Teams that need control over the operating system, proxy, and process layout You own patching, monitoring, failover, TLS, and database operations
Meteor Up (Mup) Medium Teams wanting repeatable deployment automation Verify its current maintenance status and adapt configuration to the Meteor and server versions you use
Docker Medium Teams standardizing container builds and deployment You still own orchestration, secrets, persistent storage, networking, and monitoring
Galaxy Cloud Lowest infrastructure burden Teams prioritizing managed Meteor operations There is an external service cost and a platform-specific deployment model

Meteor’s official guidance describes Galaxy as the easiest way to operate a production Meteor application with confidence, while a custom deployment is appropriate when a team needs to build and control its own hosting solution. A VPS is therefore a deliberate operations choice, not a prerequisite for using Meteor.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

The process exits immediately

  • Check the service log for a Node version mismatch and compare it with meteor node -v and .node_version.txt.
  • Confirm that main.js exists at the path in ExecStart and that WorkingDirectory points to the extracted bundle.
  • Verify that MONGO_URL, ROOT_URL, and PORT are present in the service environment.
  • Run the same command as the service account in a controlled shell to expose permission or missing-library errors.

Invalid ELF header or native module errors

Remove the copied server-side dependency directory and run (cd programs/server && npm install) on the VPS. The error commonly means native binaries were installed for another operating system or architecture.

Nginx returns 502 Bad Gateway

  • Check that the process supervisor reports the app as running.
  • Confirm Node is listening on the port configured in both PORT and proxy_pass.
  • Test the upstream locally from the VPS before testing through DNS.
  • Inspect Nginx’s error log for connection refusals, permission denials, or timeout messages.

The page loads but live updates fail

Check that the location uses proxy_http_version 1.1 and forwards Upgrade and Connection. Confirm that no load balancer, CDN, or second reverse proxy between the browser and Nginx removes those headers. Browser developer tools should show a successful WebSocket handshake rather than repeated failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Users see the wrong URL, redirects, or insecure resources

Set ROOT_URL to the exact public HTTPS base URL, including the correct hostname and no internal port. Ensure Nginx forwards X-Forwarded-Proto and that HTTP redirects to HTTPS. Clear stale client assets only after confirming that the release and cache headers are correct; do not use cache clearing to hide a mismatched deployment configuration.

Production security and maintenance checklist

  • Patch the VPS operating system, Nginx, Node.js, and application dependencies on a planned schedule.
  • Run Node under a dedicated unprivileged account.
  • Keep the MongoDB URI and other secrets out of Git, shell history, and public logs.
  • Restrict firewall rules to required public services and the database network path.
  • Use HTTPS and renew certificates before expiration.
  • Monitor process restarts, CPU, memory, disk space, response errors, WebSocket failures, and database health.
  • Maintain continuous or otherwise appropriate backups and test restoration, not just backup creation.
  • Retain a known-good application release for rollback.
  • Document the Node and Meteor versions, architecture flag, environment variables, Nginx configuration, and recovery procedure.

When a VPS is the right answer

Choose the VPS route when your team needs control over Nginx behavior, operating-system packages, network placement, deployment automation, or compliance boundaries and can staff the associated operations. Choose a managed platform when patching, TLS, process supervision, scaling, monitoring, and database operations would distract from the application. Meteor Up or Docker can reduce repetition, but neither removes responsibility for the underlying server, secrets, storage, monitoring, and rollback design.

The dependable self-managed deployment is therefore a sequence, not a single command: build for the right architecture, install native dependencies on the target VPS, run Node privately with accurate environment variables, proxy it through a WebSocket-capable Nginx configuration, secure and monitor MongoDB, and promote only the build that passed staging.
