Deploy each microservice as an independently schedulable Nomad task group, register every network endpoint with health checks, and let Nomad’s native discovery or Consul resolve dependencies at runtime. This keeps services reachable when allocations move between Ubuntu clients, instead of hard-coding an address that becomes invalid after rescheduling.

What Nomad contributes to a microservices deployment

Nomad is a declarative workload orchestrator for containers, standalone binaries, and batch jobs. You describe the desired state in a jobspec, then submit that contract to a Nomad cluster. Nomad servers place allocations on eligible client nodes and continue reconciling the desired state when a task fails or a client changes.

A microservice normally maps to a task or task group. The task specifies a driver, such as Docker, an image or command, CPU and memory limits, and any required environment or volume settings. The group defines networking and can contain related tasks that should be placed and scaled together. Put independently deployable services in separate groups so each can use its own count, rollout and resource settings.

Dynamic placement creates a networking problem: an allocation address is not permanent. Service discovery is therefore part of the deployment, not an optional convenience. Nomad’s native provider handles straightforward discovery without another product. HashiCorp recommends Consul for production workloads that need richer discovery, health-aware routing or service-mesh capabilities.

“Nomad is a simple and flexible scheduler and orchestrator to deploy and manage containers, binaries, and batch jobs in the cloud or on-prem.” — HashiCorp, Nomad overview

Reference architecture on Ubuntu

Use at least one set of Nomad server agents and one or more Nomad client agents. Servers maintain cluster state and schedule work; clients run the allocations. Ensure the hosts can communicate over the ports required by your Nomad configuration and by the task drivers you enable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The documented Countdash example uses Ubuntu 22.04 on AMD64. Treat that as a reference environment rather than a promise that every future Ubuntu release is supported. Check the current Nomad installation documentation for supported Ubuntu versions, repository keys and package versions immediately before installing.

  • Ubuntu hosts with reliable network connectivity between Nomad servers and clients.
  • A Nomad server quorum appropriate to your failure requirements and one or more eligible clients.
  • The task driver required by your jobs. The HashiCups example uses Docker, so Docker must be installed, running and enabled on clients that will receive Docker tasks.
  • Firewall rules that permit Nomad agents to communicate and permit application traffic only where it is needed.
  • A service-discovery decision: native Nomad for a smaller or simpler deployment, or separately installed Consul for production-oriented discovery and extensions.

Install and validate Nomad before deploying an application

Installation commands, package repository keys and supported versions change. Follow HashiCorp’s current Ubuntu installation page instead of copying an old command from a tutorial. Configure server and client agents according to the current reference configuration, enable the required driver, and validate cluster membership before submitting application jobs.

Check that clients are eligible

From a machine with Nomad CLI access, inspect the node list:

nomad node status

Confirm that the intended clients are ready and eligible. A client that is down, drained or missing the Docker driver will not run the corresponding allocation. Check the Nomad agent logs and driver health before investigating the jobspec.

Validate the Docker driver when you use Docker tasks

Run the Docker daemon under the service account and verify that the Nomad client can reach it. The exact service-management command depends on the Ubuntu and Docker packages you installed, so use the package’s current instructions. A successful Nomad node registration does not by itself prove that every task driver is usable; verify the driver in the client’s status and logs.

Model each microservice in a jobspec

A jobspec is the deployment contract. At the top level, define the job and its target datacenters. Inside it, define one or more groups. A group carries a count, network ports and shared placement or update behavior. Each task then identifies its driver, image or command and resources.

Example Docker jobspec with two independently scaled services

The following is a pattern, not a claim about a published image. Replace the example registry paths with images that your organization builds and controls.

job "shop" {
  datacenters = ["dc1"]

  group "api" {
    count = 2

    network {
      port "http" {
        to = 8080
      }
    }

    task "api" {
      driver = "docker"

      config {
        image = "registry.example.com/acme/api:1.0.0"
        ports = ["http"]
      }

      resources {
        cpu    = 500
        memory = 256
      }

      service {
        name     = "shop-api"
        provider = "nomad"
        port     = "http"

        check {
          name     = "api-http"
          type     = "http"
          path     = "/health"
          interval = "10s"
          timeout  = "2s"
        }
      }
    }
  }

  group "web" {
    count = 2

    network {
      port "http" {
        to = 8080
      }
    }

    task "web" {
      driver = "docker"

      config {
        image = "registry.example.com/acme/web:1.0.0"
        ports = ["http"]
      }

      resources {
        cpu    = 300
        memory = 128
      }

      service {
        name     = "shop-web"
        provider = "nomad"
        port     = "http"

        check {
          name     = "web-http"
          type     = "http"
          path     = "/health"
          interval = "10s"
          timeout  = "2s"
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

The two groups can be scheduled on different clients and scaled independently. The named http port connects the task’s container port to the allocation’s dynamically assigned host port. Registering the service against that named port prevents consumers from assuming a fixed host port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose task boundaries deliberately

  • Use one group per service when the service has an independent release cadence, replica count or resource profile.
  • Keep tightly coupled helper processes in one group only when they must share placement and lifecycle.
  • Give every externally consumed endpoint a distinct service name and a health check.
  • Set resource limits that reflect the application’s needs; insufficient memory causes restarts, while excessive reservations reduce placement options.

Register services and health checks

Add a service block for every discoverable endpoint. The block gives the catalog a stable logical name, associates the service with a named network port, selects a provider and defines a check. An HTTP check should point to an endpoint that reports whether the process is able to serve traffic, not merely whether the container is running.

Native discovery uses provider = "nomad". When Nomad–Consul integration is configured, Consul is the default provider unless you explicitly select another supported provider. Keep names stable across releases so consumers do not need configuration changes when an image tag changes.

Why checks matter

A catalog entry without a meaningful check can direct traffic to a process that is alive but unable to serve requests. Health-aware discovery removes failed instances from the set returned to consumers. After every deployment, inspect both registration and check state; repeat those checks after a replacement allocation appears.

Nomad native discovery versus Consul

Decision axis Nomad native discovery Consul integration
Additional infrastructure None beyond Nomad; discovery is built into the orchestrator. Separate Consul agents and usually a Consul cluster must be installed, configured and operated beside Nomad clients.
Good fit Simple architectures, testing environments and edge deployments. Production, multi-cloud or hybrid environments with complex networking.
Lookup methods Nomad catalog queries and the nomadService template function. Consul catalog, DNS and Consul-aware templates.
Capabilities Basic service discovery and health checks. Discovery, health-based routing, service mesh, key/value storage and ACL features.
Operational cost Fewer moving parts and one control plane to maintain. More components and failure modes, in exchange for broader networking and security features.

HashiCorp’s guidance is explicit: “For production workloads, we recommend integrating HashiCorp Consul as your service discovery solution.” That recommendation does not make Consul mandatory for every cluster. Native discovery is a reasonable choice when the deployment is small, isolated or intentionally minimizing infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure Consul when the application needs it

Consul is separate software, not a hidden Nomad subsystem. Install and configure Consul agents or a Consul cluster on the hosts and networks where they can communicate with the Nomad clients and servers. Define the Nomad–Consul integration using the current documentation, then choose Consul as the service provider in jobs that should register there.

Consul becomes useful when applications need catalog queries across environments, DNS-based lookup, health-aware routing, service-to-service encryption through a mesh, key/value configuration or ACL controls. Each feature introduces its own bootstrap, upgrade, backup and access-control responsibilities. Do not add Consul solely to avoid writing a small native-discovery template.

Make dependencies resolve at runtime

Never bake an allocation IP or a host port into application configuration. Nomad can stop an allocation and start its replacement on another client, changing both values. Resolve the logical service name when a task starts and refresh it when your application or template mechanism supports changes.

Native Nomad template lookup

Nomad’s documented nomadService template function can render the address and port of healthy instances. For example:

Render the result into an environment file or configuration file consumed by the dependent task. Decide how your application handles multiple returned instances: a client-side load balancer can rotate through them, while a single-value configuration may select only one. The important property is that the value comes from the current catalog, not from a stale allocation record.

Consul catalog and templates

With Consul, use the Consul catalog, DNS or Consul templates according to the application’s integration model. Keep the service name and check definitions consistent so a replacement allocation is automatically represented by the new healthy address. If you use ACLs, grant the task only the read permissions required for the services it consumes.

Submit, inspect and verify a deployment

  1. Validate the file locally. Use the Nomad CLI’s jobspec validation command appropriate to your installed version before changing the cluster.
  2. Submit the job. Run nomad job run shop.nomad from a machine authenticated to the target Nomad region and namespace.
  3. Inspect deployment state. Use nomad job status shop and follow the deployment until the desired allocations are running and healthy.
  4. Inspect each allocation. Run nomad alloc status <allocation-id> for events, task states, restart counts and driver errors. The angle-bracket value is the identifier returned by the job status command.
  5. Query discovery. Confirm that the expected service names appear in the Nomad catalog, or in the Consul catalog when Consul is the selected provider.
  6. Check health. Verify that every registered check is passing and that unhealthy instances are excluded from lookups.
  7. Exercise a dependency. Send a request from the consuming service to the discovered endpoint and confirm that the request succeeds through the dynamically assigned port.

The HashiCups tutorial demonstrates this pattern with several Docker microservices and an additional frontend instance used for load balancing. The lesson is architectural rather than tied to those particular services: registration, health checks and catalog inspection belong in the deployment workflow.

Handle rescheduling and rolling changes safely

Rescheduling is normal operation. A client can fail, an allocation can be restarted, or a deployment can replace an old task. The replacement may have a new IP and host port. Consumers that use service discovery continue to work because they resolve the logical name again; consumers that stored the old address fail until manually reconfigured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify after a replacement

  • The new allocation reached running state and stayed healthy beyond its startup period.
  • The service catalog contains the replacement address and no longer returns the failed instance.
  • Templates or application-side discovery refreshed the dependency endpoint.
  • Requests succeed through every healthy replica, not only the first allocation tested.
  • Logs show no repeated restart, image-pull, permission or port-binding errors.

Set update behavior for the application

Use Nomad update and health-check settings that match the service’s tolerance for overlap and downtime. Stateless HTTP services can usually roll in batches, while a stateful or schema-sensitive service may need a more conservative sequence. HashiCorp documents health-based routing and load-balancing behavior but does not prescribe one universal rollout policy; select and test the policy that fits your dependency and data model.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes

The job is pending

Inspect allocation placement events. Typical causes are no eligible client, insufficient reserved CPU or memory, an unavailable datacenter, a missing Docker driver, or a port constraint that cannot be satisfied. The task starts and immediately exits

Read the allocation events and task logs. Check the image name and tag, command or arguments, required environment variables, filesystem permissions and the process’s listen address. A service that binds only to loopback may pass a local process check but remain unreachable from other allocations; configure it to listen on the interface appropriate to your network model.

The service is registered but requests fail

Confirm that the service points to the correct named port and that the health check path and protocol match the application. Verify firewall rules between clients, then inspect whether the check is actually passing. A catalog entry that is failing health checks should not be treated as a usable endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A consumer still calls an old address

Search the consumer’s rendered configuration and environment for a literal allocation IP or host port. Replace it with a native nomadService template, Consul catalog lookup or another runtime discovery mechanism. Restart or reload the consumer if its configuration is read only at startup.

Consul lookups return nothing

Check that Consul agents can communicate, that the service was registered with the Consul provider, and that ACL tokens permit catalog reads. Then compare the service name, namespace and datacenter used by the consumer with the values used at registration. Nomad’s native catalog and Consul’s catalog are distinct; querying one will not reveal a service registered only in the other.

Production readiness checklist

  • Ubuntu versions and CPU architecture are supported by the current Nomad and driver documentation.
  • Nomad servers have a healthy quorum, and intended clients report ready and eligible.
  • Every task uses an available driver and declares realistic CPU and memory resources.
  • Each discoverable endpoint has a stable service name, named port and meaningful health check.
  • Consumers resolve service names at runtime rather than storing allocation addresses.
  • The choice between native discovery and Consul is documented, including who operates any Consul agents, ACLs and upgrades.
  • Deployment status, allocation events, logs, catalog entries and checks are part of the release procedure.
  • A rescheduling test has confirmed that dependencies recover when an allocation moves to another client.
  • Update and health-check settings prevent an unsafe rollout for the application’s state and traffic pattern.
  • Monitoring and alerting cover failed allocations, failing checks, resource exhaustion and discovery errors.

Version and documentation caveat

One HashiCorp tutorial lists Nomad v1.3.3 or later as a prerequisite at the time that page was published. That figure is a tutorial requirement, not a current universal release recommendation. Nomad, Consul and Ubuntu support matrices, package commands and configuration labels change; verify them against the live installation and reference documentation before executing a production deployment.
