To host Concatenation, run the ReversTeam pack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 on Forge, and make sure every player and the server use the same pack release, loader, mods, configs and assets. The maintainer lists concatenation-server-1.2.2.zip as an optional server package, but another listing reports a newer 1.5.x update, so verify the archive against the exact client release before you deploy it.

The simplest route is a compatible launcher for the client and the matching server archive for the host. If no matching archive exists, install the same Forge version manually, copy the pack files, remove client-only mods, accept Minecraft’s EULA, then configure networking for anyone outside your home network.

What Concatenation is—and why version matching matters
ReversTeam describes Concatenation as “a 1.20.1 modpack with four starting pathways to choose from technology to magic to carve a unique path through a branching questline.” It is a multiplayer-capable Minecraft Java Edition pack built for Forge. The four starting routes are part of the pack’s progression design; they do not change the server software you need.
There is also a different Modrinth project with the same name that identifies itself as a Fabric pack. Selecting a download by title alone can therefore produce a client that cannot join a Forge server. Confirm all of the following before installing:

- Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1.
- Forge, not Fabric or another loader.
- The ReversTeam Concatenation project or its launcher entry.
- The same Concatenation release on every client and on the server.
- The server archive, if used, that belongs to that release.
A modded server checks much more than the Minecraft version. A different mod version, missing configuration file, extra client-side mod, or changed loader build can cause a disconnect even when both screens say “1.20.1.” Treat the pack release as a single, shared software version.
Hardware, software and network requirements
Memory allocation
ReversTeam and Technic Platform both give a practical range of 4–12 GB of RAM, with the amount depending on the computer and its other workloads. This is a recommendation from those pages; a publication year is not stated. Start conservatively, observe actual usage, and leave memory for the operating system and the launcher. Assigning nearly all physical RAM to Java can make the host less responsive and does not automatically improve performance.

These changes affect the client more than the dedicated server, but they can make a combined host-and-player computer usable.
Java and Forge
The current material identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge but does not establish one universal Java major version for every Concatenation release. Use the Java runtime recommended by the selected Forge build or by the launcher that installs that release. Do not assume that a Java version from a different pack or an old tutorial applies here.
Storage and operating system
Reserve room for the server directory, generated world data, logs, player data, backups and future pack updates. A clean, dedicated folder is easier to back up and troubleshoot than a directory mixed with unrelated worlds. Windows, Linux and macOS can all run the manual Forge route; the exact start-script syntax differs by operating system.
Internet access
Players on the same local network can usually connect to the host’s local address. Friends outside that network need either router port forwarding or a port-tunneling service. Port forwarding exposes a service from your home connection, so use a strong administrator password, keep the operating system and Java updated, and forward only the port required by the server.

Choose a hosting method

When evaluating a managed host, compare control of files and configuration, available RAM and CPU, storage, backup and rollback tools, network setup and recurring cost. One commercial provider’s product page advertises one-click Concatenation installation, twice-daily backups, 45 days of backup history and a 48-hour money-back guarantee. Those terms can change, so confirm them on the provider’s current page before paying; they are not requirements of the modpack itself.
Install the client pack first
Install the client before deploying the server. That gives you a known-good pack release to match and lets you test that the launcher can load the game.
- Install a compatible Minecraft launcher, such as CurseForge or Technic.
- Search the launcher for Concatenation.
- Open the entry associated with ReversTeam and check that it states Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge.
- Check the displayed pack release number. Record it; you will compare it with the server archive.
- Install the pack and allocate an initial amount within the 4–12 GB range recommended by ReversTeam and Technic, subject to your machine’s available memory.
- Launch a single-player world. Confirm that the title screen, Forge loading process and mod list appear normally before troubleshooting a networked server.
Do not copy a random “server” download into this installation. A client pack can contain graphics, menus, keybind helpers and other files that a dedicated server must not load.
Use the release-matched server package
The ReversTeam README names concatenation-server-1.2.2.zip as the optional server installation file. That filename is release-specific, not a promise that every current download uses 1.2.2. Technic’s page reports a newer 1.5.x update, so check the release number shown by your launcher and obtain the server archive that explicitly matches it.

- Create a new, empty server directory. Avoid extracting over another modpack’s files.
- Download the server archive whose release matches the client you installed.
- Extract the archive into the clean directory.
- Inspect the included start files and read any release notes supplied with the archive.
- Open the start script once. The first run normally creates configuration files, a world directory and
eula.txt. - Open
eula.txt, changeeula=falsetoeula=true, save it, and run the start script again. - Wait for the console to report that the server has finished starting before attempting to connect.
Do not rename a newer archive to look like 1.2.2 or combine files from two releases. If the README and launcher show different versions, treat that as a release-selection problem and verify the exact package before inviting players.
Manual Forge setup when no server pack matches
A manual installation is a fallback, not a way to make incompatible releases work together. You still need the Forge build and mod files intended for the same Concatenation release.

Create the server installation
- Make a new server folder and give your account write permission to it.
- Download the Forge installer that matches Minecraft 1.20.1 and the pack’s required Forge build.
- Run the installer and choose Install server, targeting the new folder.
- Start the generated server once so Forge creates its initial files, then stop it cleanly.
Copy the pack’s server-safe files
Copy the Concatenation mods, config and any mod-specific asset directories required by the pack into the Forge server folder. Preserve the directory structure. Do not copy the entire client instance blindly: client-only mods can reference rendering, audio, keybind or window APIs that do not exist on a dedicated server.
Remove client-only mods and their corresponding configuration files. If a supplied server archive exists, it is preferable because the maintainer has already separated server files. If you must decide manually, inspect each mod’s documentation or metadata and test the server after each change rather than deleting large groups without recording what changed.

Use the script generated by Forge or create one for your operating system. Technic’s example is:
java -Xmx4G forge.jar noguiThe -Xmx4G value sets the maximum heap in that example; adjust it to the host’s capacity and the 4–12 GB recommendation. The exact Forge jar filename may differ, so use the filename present in your directory rather than copying the example literally. On Windows, put the command in a .bat file. On Linux or macOS, put it in a .sh file, make it executable and run it from the server directory.
Run the script once, edit eula.txt as described above, then run it again. A server that stops immediately after the first launch is often waiting for EULA acceptance rather than suffering a mod failure.
Configure local and remote connections
Players on the same network
- Find the host computer’s local IPv4 address.
- Start the server and wait for its ready message.
- Give players the local address and the server port shown in the server configuration.
- Have each player select Multiplayer, choose Add Server or Direct Connection, enter the address and connect.
The host should use the local address rather than the public internet address when everyone is on the same Wi-Fi or wired network. A firewall may still need an inbound rule for Java or the selected server port.

Players outside the home network
- Assign the host computer a stable local address, preferably through the router’s DHCP reservation feature.
- Forward the Minecraft server port from the router to that local address.
- Allow the server process through the host operating system’s firewall.
- Restart the server and test from a network that is not the host’s Wi-Fi, such as a phone hotspot.
- Give remote players the public address and port, not the private local address.
If router access is unavailable or your internet provider uses restrictive inbound networking, use a port-tunneling service instead. Every player still needs the identical Concatenation client release and Forge setup; networking cannot correct a mod mismatch.
Make every player’s installation identical
Ask players to install the same launcher profile or distribute the same verified pack release. A useful pre-connection checklist is:
- Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
- Minecraft 1.20.1.
- Forge loader, with the same required build.
- Identical Concatenation release number.
- Identical mod files, configs and required assets.
- No extra client-side or gameplay-changing mods unless the server and every player support them.
- Sufficient allocated memory and shaders disabled if the machine struggles.
Do not update only one side because a launcher offers an automatic upgrade. Update the server, test it, then have all players move to that same release.

The server says the mod list is different
Compare the client and server release numbers first. Then compare the mods directory, Forge build and configuration files. Reinstalling the matching server archive into a clean folder is usually safer than trying to repair a mixture of old and new files.
The client cannot reach the server
Check the address type: local IP for a local player, public address or tunnel endpoint for a remote player. Confirm that the server is running, the port is correct, the firewall allows Java and the router forwards the port to the correct computer. Test locally before diagnosing internet routing.
The server closes during startup
Read the first error and its referenced mod, not only the final line. Common causes are a client-only mod copied into the server, a missing dependency, the wrong Forge build or insufficient memory. Remove client-only files, restore the release-matched configuration and increase memory only within the host’s available capacity.

Players get timeouts or severe lag
Verify that the host is not swapping because too much RAM was allocated, close other heavy applications, reduce client render distance and disable shaders. If the host computer is also playing, leave enough CPU and memory for the game client and operating system. A managed host can provide more consistent uptime, but it does not remove the need for matching files.
The world starts but gameplay behaves strangely
Stop the server, back up the world and check that no configuration files came from another Concatenation release. Do not overwrite a working world with an untested update. Test updates on a copy first and keep dated backups so you can roll back.
Backups, updates and safe administration
Before changing the pack, Forge, configs or world, stop the server cleanly and make a complete copy of the server directory or at least the world, mods, config and player-data files. Keep more than one dated backup in a separate location. A backup that remains on the same failing disk is not a reliable recovery plan.
For an update, record the current release, back up the world, install the new server files in a separate directory, copy only the data you intend to retain, and test with one client before inviting everyone. Never assume a newer Technic listing and the README’s 1.2.2 filename refer to the same package. The release number printed by the launcher and the server archive must agree.
Use the server console to stop the process rather than closing the terminal or powering off the machine. Clean shutdowns reduce the risk of corrupted world data. Restrict administrative permissions to trusted players and avoid downloading replacement mods from unverified sources.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Self-hosting is appropriate when you have a machine that can remain online, control of the router and time to maintain the installation. It offers direct access to files, logs, configuration and backups, with no host subscription, but you handle every operational task.

Managed hosting is useful when you need an always-on server, a web control panel or simpler networking. Compare the provider’s actual Concatenation support, RAM and CPU allocation, storage limits, backup retention, rollback process, cancellation terms and ability to download your files. One-click installation is valuable only if it installs the same release your players use.
For either method, the decisive compatibility rule is unchanged: Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, the pack release and the complete mod/config set must line up on the server and every client.
