The reliable VPS pattern for a Pyramid application is straightforward: install the project and its dependencies in an isolated Python environment, keep a production PasteDeploy configuration such as production.ini, run the WSGI callable with Waitress or Gunicorn, place a maintained reverse proxy such as nginx in front of it, and supervise the process with the VPS operating system’s service manager.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
Use Waitress when you need the simplest cross-platform server for development or light production. Use Gunicorn when you want a conventional multi-worker production process, PasteDeploy loading, and Unix-socket support. In either case, bind the WSGI server to localhost or a Unix socket rather than exposing it directly to the internet, then terminate HTTPS at the reverse proxy.

The production layout
A Pyramid deployment has four practical layers:
- Internet and DNS: the domain resolves to the VPS address.
- Reverse proxy: nginx listens on ports 80 and 443, handles TLS, serves or caches static files when appropriate, and forwards application requests.
- WSGI server: Waitress or Gunicorn owns the Pyramid process and exposes a local TCP port or Unix socket.
- Pyramid application: the WSGI callable created by Pyramid’s configurator reads the production settings and talks to the database and other services.
The request path is therefore client → nginx → WSGI server → Pyramid. A WSGI server should not be your public edge: Waitress does not provide native TLS, and a buffering HTTP proxy is generally useful in front of Gunicorn. The Pyramid Community Cookbook describes this same separation of public ports 80/443 from the local application listener.
What you need before connecting to the VPS
- A VPS running a supported Linux distribution and a supported Python 3 runtime. Pyramid 2.0 runs on Python 3 only.
- A non-root deployment account with ownership of the application directory.
- Build tools and Python development headers for dependencies that compile native extensions.
- Your Pyramid project source, dependency lock or requirements files, and any private package credentials needed during installation.
- Database credentials, a database already reachable from the VPS, and a documented migration command if the project uses schema migrations.
- A domain name pointed at the VPS, plus a plan for obtaining and renewing a TLS certificate.
- A service supervisor. On most Linux VPS systems this is systemd; supervisord is another documented Pyramid deployment option.
Use the operating system’s package manager to install Python, its virtual-environment module, a compiler toolchain, and nginx. Package names differ by distribution, so verify the exact names for your image instead of copying an Ubuntu command to an unrelated system.

Prepare an isolated application account and virtual environment
The commands below illustrate a conventional layout. Replace the paths and account name with the values used by your VPS.
- Create a system account with no interactive shell, then create an application directory owned by that account. Keeping the project outside a personal home directory makes service permissions and backups easier to reason about.
- Place the release source in a versioned directory such as
/srv/pyramid-app/releases/2026-10-15, or use a single directory if your deployment process does not support side-by-side releases. - Create the virtual environment with the same Python interpreter that the service will use:
python3 -m venv /srv/pyramid-app/.venv - Activate it for installation work:
source /srv/pyramid-app/.venv/bin/activate - Upgrade packaging tools and install the project’s declared dependencies. A generated Pyramid project can be installed in editable form with
pip install -e .for development. For production, build and install a package or install the source at a fixed release revision so that the files used by the service cannot change unexpectedly.
Always run pip, the WSGI server, and diagnostic commands from this same virtual environment. A frequent deployment failure is installing Gunicorn globally while the Pyramid package exists only inside the virtual environment, or the reverse.
Keep secrets out of the source tree
Do not commit database passwords, signing keys, session secrets, or cloud credentials to the repository. Supply them through a protected environment file, the service manager’s environment mechanism, or a secrets facility available on your VPS. Restrict that file to the deployment account and the service manager, and ensure backups do not make it world-readable.
Build a production PasteDeploy configuration
Pyramid projects commonly use PasteDeploy INI files. A generated project normally includes a development configuration and a production.ini intended to execute the application with production settings. Keep these configurations separate: development conveniences such as verbose debugging, automatic reloaders, permissive hosts, and development-only middleware should not be enabled on the public service.
The exact section names depend on the project package, but a PasteDeploy file typically identifies the application entry point, middleware pipeline, server settings, and logging configuration. A simplified shape looks like this:

Treat that snippet as a structure, not a drop-in file: retain the sections generated for your project and change only settings you understand. Confirm that the package name in the use line matches the installed distribution and that any database URL, session secret, allowed-host list, and static-file path point to production resources.

- Use a production database and credentials, never the development database.
- Set explicit logging destinations and levels. Keep application logs on stderr or a managed file so the service supervisor can collect them.
- Disable template and code reloaders unless you are deliberately running a development instance.
- Set trusted host and proxy-related settings according to your framework and proxy topology.
- Use absolute paths for uploads, generated files, and static assets; relative paths can change when a service starts from a different working directory.
Confirm the WSGI entry point before adding a proxy
Pyramid’s configurator creates a WSGI application object. Any compliant WSGI server can call that object, provided the package is importable in the server’s environment. Before involving nginx, prove that the application starts locally.
- Change to the project directory.
- Activate the production virtual environment.
- Run the project’s documented local server command with
production.ini, or start the selected WSGI server on a loopback address. - From the VPS itself, request a health endpoint with
curl http://127.0.0.1:6543/healthor the actual local port used by your configuration. - Read the traceback and import errors carefully. An error such as
ModuleNotFoundErroralmost always means the service is using a different interpreter or the package was not installed into the active environment.
Choose a health endpoint that does not expose credentials or internal diagnostics. If the application has no dedicated endpoint, test a lightweight route that does not trigger an expensive report or a mutating operation.
Choose Waitress, Gunicorn, or mod_wsgi
The Pyramid documentation describes Waitress as the generated-project default, suitable for development and light production, and calls Gunicorn another good production alternative. It also identifies mod_wsgi as an option when Apache integration is the operational standard. NGINX Unit is not a sensible default for a new installation: its Pyramid guide states that Unit was archived and unmaintained as of October 2025.
| Server | Best fit | Operational characteristics | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waitress | Simple deployments, development, and light production | Pure Python, cross-platform, and the generated Pyramid project’s usual default | No native TLS; place it behind a reverse proxy for public HTTPS |
| Gunicorn | Conventional Linux production deployments | Multi-worker process model, PasteDeploy support, and Unix-socket or TCP binding | Gunicorn and the Pyramid package must be installed in the same virtual environment; use a buffering proxy in front |
| mod_wsgi | Organizations already standardized on Apache | Integrates the WSGI application into Apache’s process and proxy ecosystem | Apache configuration and process management become part of the deployment surface |
| NGINX Unit | Not recommended for a new deployment | Its Pyramid documentation remains useful as historical reference | Archived and unmaintained as of October 2025 |
Compare options by maintenance status, operating-system support, process model, socket support, TLS integration, logging, and the tooling your team already operates. Do not choose a worker count from a generic article: CPU, memory, request latency, database capacity, and workload shape determine the correct value.

Run Pyramid with Waitress
Waitress is often the least surprising first production step for a small Pyramid service. If the generated project exposes a PasteDeploy configuration, start it with the project’s pserve entry point:
/srv/pyramid-app/.venv/bin/pserve /srv/pyramid-app/production.ini
Bind it to 127.0.0.1 or a Unix socket through the configuration rather than to a public interface. The exact server section is project-specific; check the generated configuration and the Waitress documentation installed with your environment.
Waitress is described in its current documentation as “a production-quality pure-Python WSGI server with very acceptable performance.” That description does not remove the need for a reverse proxy, process supervision, log rotation, resource limits, or application-level testing.
Run Pyramid with Gunicorn
Gunicorn can load a PasteDeploy file directly. The documented minimal command is:
cd /srv/pyramid-app
/srv/pyramid-app/.venv/bin/gunicorn --paste production.ini
For a local TCP listener, add a bind address:
/srv/pyramid-app/.venv/bin/gunicorn
--paste /srv/pyramid-app/production.ini
--bind 127.0.0.1:8000
--access-logfile -
--error-logfile -
--log-level info
A Unix socket keeps the application listener off the TCP stack and is a useful choice when nginx runs on the same VPS. Create a runtime directory with permissions that allow nginx to connect, then use a command such as:

/srv/pyramid-app/.venv/bin/gunicorn
--paste /srv/pyramid-app/production.ini
--bind unix:/run/pyramid-app/app.sock
--access-logfile -
--error-logfile -
--log-level info
The Pyramid Community Cookbook illustrates a Gunicorn configuration with a Unix socket, four workers, application preloading, access logs on stderr, and a configured log level. Those four workers are an example configuration, not a benchmark or a recommendation. Start with a conservative count that fits the VPS memory and measure queueing, latency, error rates, and database pressure before changing it.
Understand Gunicorn options before copying them
--workerscontrols the number of worker processes. More workers increase parallelism but also memory use and database connections.--preloadimports the application before workers fork. It can reduce duplicated read-only memory, but code that is unsafe to initialize before forking should not use it.--access-logfile -and--error-logfile -send logs to the service manager’s standard streams.--bindchooses the local TCP address or Unix socket. Never bind an application that lacks its own authentication and hardening to0.0.0.0merely to make proxy testing easier.
Put nginx in front of the WSGI server
Configure nginx to listen publicly and forward only to the local application endpoint. A TCP example is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
server {
listen 80;
server_name app.example.com;
location / {
proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000;
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;
}
}
For a Unix socket, use the proxy syntax supported by your nginx version and test the configuration before reloading it. Keep the socket directory executable by the nginx account while preventing unrelated users from reading or replacing the socket. If you serve large uploads or streaming responses, review request-body and proxy-buffer limits rather than accepting defaults blindly.
Static files and upload paths
Serving immutable CSS, JavaScript, images, and game-related assets directly from nginx can reduce Python work. Do not expose the entire application directory: define a dedicated static directory and a separate non-public upload directory. Ensure the release process copies or links static assets into the path nginx serves, and verify that a missing file produces a deliberate 404 instead of leaking filesystem details.
Add the domain and HTTPS
- Create an A or AAAA record for the domain, taking into account DNS propagation and whether the VPS has a stable IPv4 or IPv6 address.
- Configure nginx for the real host name and test the HTTP route before requesting a certificate.
- Obtain a certificate from a trusted certificate authority using your chosen certificate-management tool.
- Configure nginx to listen on 443 with the certificate and private key, and redirect plain HTTP to HTTPS unless a deliberate exception is required.
- Forward the original host, client address, and scheme headers so Pyramid can generate correct absolute URLs and enforce secure-session behavior.
- Automate renewal and test that a renewed certificate reloads nginx without interrupting traffic.
The certificate private key belongs in a root-readable or tightly restricted directory. Do not place it in the Pyramid repository or make it readable by the application account unless your chosen renewal design requires that access.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Supervise the process with systemd
Starting Gunicorn in an SSH session is not production process management: it stops when the session ends, does not restart after a crash, and does not reliably return after a reboot. A systemd unit should specify the service account, working directory, virtual-environment executable, restart policy, and log destination.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn illustrative TCP-listener unit is:
[Unit]
Description=Pyramid WSGI application
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=pyramid
Group=pyramid
WorkingDirectory=/srv/pyramid-app
EnvironmentFile=/etc/pyramid-app/production.env
ExecStart=/srv/pyramid-app/.venv/bin/gunicorn --paste /srv/pyramid-app/production.ini --bind 127.0.0.1:8000 --access-logfile - --error-logfile - --log-level info
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Install the unit according to your distribution, run the service-manager configuration reload, enable it at boot, and start it. Then inspect its status and recent logs. Keep the environment file readable only by root and the service account. If you use a Unix socket, add a runtime-directory strategy and set the socket group or mode so nginx can connect without granting broad filesystem access.
Database, migrations, and background work
Deploying the web process does not automatically update a database. Before switching traffic:
- Take a tested backup or snapshot appropriate to the database system.
- Run migrations once, from a controlled release step, rather than from every Gunicorn worker.
- Confirm that the service account can connect to the database but cannot perform unrelated administrative operations.
- Check connection-pool limits against the number of WSGI workers and any background workers.
- Run any required asset compilation or cache warm-up after the new code is installed and before the proxy sends users to it.
If the application sends email, processes queues, or performs scheduled jobs, supervise those processes separately. Do not hide a long-running worker inside a web request or assume a WSGI worker is a reliable scheduler.
Test the deployment before directing users to it
- Application process: confirm the service is active and that the expected interpreter and release path appear in its command line.
- Local endpoint: use
curlagainst the loopback port or socket-facing proxy path and verify the status code, headers, and response body. - Proxy routing: request the public host with an explicit
Hostheader if DNS is not live yet. Confirm that nginx reaches the correct service and that an unknown host is not routed to the application accidentally. - Static assets: load CSS, JavaScript, images, and versioned files; check permissions and cache headers.
- Database paths: sign in with a test account, read representative records, and exercise one safe write if the application requires writes.
- Headers and HTTPS: verify secure redirects, cookies, generated URLs, client-IP logging, and the behavior of routes behind TLS termination.
- Failure behavior: stop the WSGI service briefly and confirm nginx returns a controlled 502 rather than exposing an internal traceback. Start it again and verify recovery.
- Reboot persistence: reboot during a maintenance window and confirm that the service, nginx, mounts, and any required background processes return in the right order.
The cited Pyramid deployment patterns are guidance, not a test report for your particular application. Your own health, load, migration, and restart checks are the evidence that this VPS is ready.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Troubleshoot the common failure modes
“502 Bad Gateway” from nginx
- Check whether the WSGI service is running and listening on the address nginx uses.
- Compare the nginx upstream with Gunicorn’s exact
--bindvalue or socket path. - For a Unix socket, inspect directory traversal permissions and socket ownership.
- Read both nginx’s error log and the service manager’s application log; the first often reports connection refusal while the second contains the actual Python exception.
Import or package errors at startup
- Run the exact
ExecStartcommand manually as the service account. - Print the interpreter path and installed package list from the virtual environment.
- Install the project package, not only its third-party requirements.
- Check that the working directory and PasteDeploy
useentry point refer to the release currently installed.
Requests work locally but fail through HTTPS
- Check the forwarded host and scheme headers.
- Review trusted-proxy and secure-cookie settings in the Pyramid configuration.
- Confirm that nginx’s TLS server block has the intended
server_nameand certificate. - Look for redirects that alternate between HTTP and HTTPS because the application cannot see the original scheme.
Workers repeatedly restart
- Inspect the first traceback rather than increasing the worker count.
- Check for out-of-memory kills, exhausted database connections, and initialization code that is unsafe with preloading.
- Run one worker in the foreground during diagnosis, then restore supervised operation.
Changes are not visible after deployment
- Confirm that the service points to the new release directory and virtual environment.
- Reload or restart the WSGI service after replacing code; a running worker does not automatically import new modules.
- Invalidate application and proxy caches only when you understand which responses are cacheable.
- Check that nginx is serving the new static-asset directory and that browser cache headers are not masking the change.
Safe update and rollback procedure
- Build or install the new release beside the currently running release.
- Install dependencies into a new virtual environment when dependency changes are substantial; this makes rollback more deterministic.
- Run migrations and compatibility checks in the order required by the application.
- Run local health checks against the new release before changing the service target.
- Switch the service to the new release and watch application, nginx, database, and system logs.
- Keep the previous release intact until the new version has passed its observation window.
- If errors appear, stop the new service, restore the prior release target, and follow the database rollback plan. Code rollback cannot undo an irreversible schema migration.
Operational security checklist
- Use a non-root service account and disable interactive login for it where practical.
- Allow inbound traffic only for the SSH port you administer and the public HTTP/HTTPS ports required by nginx.
- Patch the operating system, Python runtime, Pyramid dependencies, nginx, and WSGI server on a defined schedule.
- Restrict repository, environment-file, socket, upload, and certificate permissions.
- Rotate secrets and revoke credentials when staff, hosts, or repositories change.
- Send logs to a location with retention and alerting; watch for repeated 5xx responses, authentication failures, disk exhaustion, and certificate-renewal errors.
- Back up the database and uploaded files, and perform restoration drills rather than assuming a backup is usable.
- Document the exact Python version, release path, service unit, proxy configuration, migration command, and rollback procedure for the next operator.
Which setup should you choose?
For a small Pyramid application maintained by one person, start with the generated PasteDeploy configuration, Waitress on localhost, nginx for HTTPS, and systemd for supervision. This minimizes moving parts while retaining a proper production boundary.
Choose Gunicorn when you need its worker process model, Unix-socket integration, or an established operational pattern around it. Size workers from measurements and VPS memory; the Cookbook’s four-worker example is illustrative only.
Choose mod_wsgi when Apache is already the supported platform and your team benefits from keeping WSGI hosting inside that stack. Do not begin a new deployment with NGINX Unit: its own Pyramid guide records that the project was archived and unmaintained in October 2025.
Quick Recap
Final pre-launch checklist
- The Pyramid package and all dependencies install in the same virtual environment used by the service.
production.iniuses production secrets, database settings, logging, and disabled development reloaders.- The WSGI server listens only on localhost or a protected Unix socket.
- nginx routes the intended host, serves approved static directories, forwards proxy headers, and terminates HTTPS.
- The service manager starts the process at boot, restarts failures, and captures logs.
- Database migrations, backups, health checks, TLS renewal, and rollback have all been exercised.
- File permissions, firewall rules, patching, monitoring, and documentation are in place before public traffic is enabled.
