The safest remote WordPress workflow keeps the site’s files and runtime on the server while you use SSH for access, VS Code Remote-SSH for editing, and WP-CLI for repeatable administration. Set up key authentication, verify the remote PHP/web/database toolchain, work in staging, and deploy reviewed commits with a rollback plan.

Understand what a remote WordPress workflow actually includes
SSH is only the transport. A usable development setup has three layers:

- Your workstation: an SSH client, an editor such as VS Code, and optionally local Git, rsync, or SSHFS.
- The remote host: an OpenSSH-compatible server, the account that can reach the WordPress directory, PHP, the web server, database access, and usually Git.
- Remote command-line tools: WP-CLI and any project-specific scripts or custom commands installed on that host.
VS Code Remote-SSH connects the editor to the host, opens a remote folder, and runs its terminal commands and extensions there. The authoritative working tree can remain on the server; you do not need to copy the entire site to your laptop. WP-CLI can be run after an interactive SSH login or invoked from your workstation with its --ssh option.
This distinction matters. Editing PHP remotely does not remove the need for a matching PHP runtime, a reachable database, web-server configuration, uploads, environment variables, and WordPress permissions. A file can save successfully while the site still fails because the remote runtime or database is unavailable.

Check prerequisites before opening an editor
Confirm server access and project location
Ask the host or administrator for the SSH hostname, username, port if it is not the default, and the absolute or home-relative path to the WordPress installation. Confirm that the account can enter that directory and that it has the write permissions required for your work. A plain SSH session must work before any editor integration can be debugged.
Verify the remote operating environment
Remote-SSH needs a supported remote operating system and architecture, a usable Bash shell, and utilities used to install its server component, including tar and either curl or wget. The host also needs compatible kernel, glibc, and libstdc++ support, plus outbound HTTPS access if the remote server component must be downloaded. These requirements apply to the remote machine, not just your desktop.

Verify WordPress tools
From the project directory, check that PHP, the web server, database access, Git (if your project uses it), and WP-CLI are available. Keep custom WP-CLI commands on the remote host; a local invocation still executes the command in the remote environment and cannot load a command that exists only on your laptop.
Set up key-based SSH authentication
Key authentication is the practical baseline for Remote-SSH and for unattended deployment scripts. Create a key pair on your workstation, install the public key in the remote account’s authorized keys, and test the connection before configuring VS Code.
- Generate a key pair with your operating system’s SSH tooling, choosing a protected private-key location and a passphrase.
- Install the public key for the deployment or development account on the server. Do not copy the private key to the server.
- Test the exact account and host with
ssh user@host. If the service uses another port, test withssh -p 2222 user@host. - When prompted, verify the server host key through a trusted channel before accepting it. A changed key can indicate a rebuilt server or a security problem.
If this basic command fails, fix DNS, firewall rules, account access, key permissions, or host-key verification first. VS Code cannot compensate for a transport-level failure.

- Install the Remote-SSH extension in VS Code.
- Open the Command Palette and choose Remote-SSH: Connect to Host…. Enter the same
user@hostvalue that worked in the plain SSH test, or select a matching entry from your SSH configuration. - Accept the host-key prompt only after checking that the fingerprint belongs to the intended server.
- After the remote window opens, use File > Open Folder… and select the WordPress project directory on the host.
- Wait for the remote VS Code server and any selected extensions to install. The editor window is local, but the terminal, language services, debugging processes, and extensions run on the remote machine.
- Open the integrated terminal and confirm the working directory, PHP version, Git status, and WP-CLI availability before editing.
Because extensions execute remotely, IntelliSense and code navigation can see the server’s PHP files and project dependencies without a second local checkout. It also means a broken remote prerequisite can prevent an extension from starting even when VS Code itself is healthy.
Choose the right way to move or edit files
Remote-SSH, SSHFS, and rsync solve different problems. Choose based on where your tools need the working copy and how much data you will move.

When Remote-SSH is the better choice
Use it when the remote PHP version, dependencies, database, and uploads are part of the feedback loop and the server can support an editor session. You avoid a large synchronization step and test against the environment that will run the code. Keep the remote working tree under version control so that direct edits remain reviewable.
When SSHFS is appropriate
SSHFS is useful for inspecting a remote tree or changing one known file with a local application. It is a poor fit for dependency managers, search-indexing, or builds that touch thousands of files because network filesystem latency compounds quickly.
When rsync is appropriate
Use rsync when local tools require a full copy or when a bulk transfer is more efficient than many small remote file operations. Define what may travel in each direction. Exclude WordPress uploads, runtime caches, secret configuration, and server-generated files unless your deployment design explicitly manages them. A repository-based release is easier to audit than an unexplained ad-hoc synchronization.
Run WP-CLI through SSH
WP-CLI supports a remote target with the form --ssh=[<scheme>:][<user>@]<host>[:<port>][<path>]. The path identifies the WordPress installation on the remote host. You can also log in first and run commands in an interactive shell.

wp theme listInteractive execution is the simplest diagnostic because you see the same shell initialization and PATH that the command receives. Confirm the current directory before running a command that changes data.
One-shot commands from your workstation
wp --ssh=user@host/path core version
wp [email protected]:2222~/sites/example.com core version
wp @staging plugin update --allThe first form targets a host and path directly. The second shows a non-default SSH port with the remote path. An alias such as @staging can store the host, port, path, and other target details in wp-cli.yml or global configuration, making repeated operations less error-prone.

Start with core version, plugin list, and option get to prove that the alias and path identify the intended installation. On multisite, add --url for the specific site you mean to inspect or change. Do not run a broad update, database operation, or other destructive command against production until the alias, path, site URL, and backup plan have been verified.
Fix the non-interactive WP-CLI PATH problem
A frequent surprise is that wp works after an interactive login but fails when launched with wp --ssh. Non-interactive SSH sessions may not load the same .bashrc or .zshrc files, so the directory containing the WP-CLI executable is missing from PATH.
- Log in interactively and run
command -v wpto find the executable. - Compare the interactive environment with a non-interactive test, for example by printing
PATHthrough the same SSH account. - Make WP-CLI available in a standard system path visible to non-interactive sessions, or configure the documented environment options for your host and shell.
- Repeat the remote
core versioncommand before attempting updates.
Do not solve this by placing a different WP-CLI binary on your workstation. The remote command must be installed and executable on the remote server, because that is where WordPress, PHP, and the database context are loaded.
Organize code so remote work is reversible
Track custom code in Git
Keep custom themes, plugins, mu-plugins, configuration templates, and deployment scripts in a repository. Commit a focused change before deploying it. Do not treat WordPress core, uploads, caches, or secrets as ordinary application source unless your hosting design specifically requires that approach.

Separate environments with explicit aliases
Create distinct development, staging, and production targets. Give each alias an unambiguous host, port, path, and, where needed, site URL. Avoid relying on whichever directory happens to be current in a shell session. Naming the environment in every command makes a pasted command easier to audit.
Use staging before production
Deploy a commit to staging, exercise the affected front-end and administrative paths, inspect logs, and run read-only WP-CLI checks. Only then promote the same reviewed commit to production. A staging copy should use safe credentials and data-handling rules appropriate to your organization.
Back up and define rollback
Before a production change, verify that a restorable database backup and the relevant files or release artifact exist. A rollback plan should identify the previous commit or release, the database restore procedure if schema or content changed, and who can execute it. A backup that has never been restored is not a tested rollback.
Deploy small projects over SSH
For a small site, a reviewed Git pull or a release script executed over SSH can be sufficient. A release script should fail on errors, identify the commit being deployed, run from a known WordPress path, and finish with health checks such as a WP-CLI version query and a request to the intended site URL.

- Confirm the target alias, path, branch or release identifier, and current backup.
- Connect with the deployment account and record the current commit.
- Fetch the reviewed commit or release artifact rather than editing production files by hand.
- Run required dependency, cache, or migration steps in the documented order.
- Use WP-CLI for narrowly scoped post-deployment tasks, checking the command output for the intended site.
- Check the public site, login, critical templates, and error logs.
- Record the deployed commit and any database or configuration changes.
Team workflows benefit from a staging-to-production pipeline that preserves commit history, backups, approvals, and rollback instructions. Some managed hosts add SSH gateways, Git-triggered deployments, differential rsync transfers, or post-deployment Bash and WP-CLI hooks; those are host-specific features, not capabilities you should assume on every SSH server.

- Use a dedicated account with only the permissions needed for the project and deployment tasks.
- Prefer key authentication and protect private keys with a passphrase. Keep separate keys or accounts for developers and automated deployment where practical.
- Review the target before every command that can delete files, alter options, update plugins, or change the database.
- Use aliases and explicit paths instead of typing a production hostname from memory.
- Keep secrets outside the repository and avoid displaying them in terminal transcripts or deployment logs.
- Do not use broad recursive copy commands to synchronize a live WordPress tree. They can replace uploads, caches, generated files, or configuration unexpectedly.
- Make one small, observable change at a time when diagnosing a production issue; commit or record each change so it can be reversed.
Troubleshoot by isolating the failing layer
The plain SSH command fails
Check DNS resolution, firewall rules, the SSH port, account authorization, private-key selection and permissions, and host-key verification. Until ssh user@host succeeds, Remote-SSH and WP-CLI tests are downstream noise.

VS Code cannot install its remote server
Recheck the remote operating system and architecture, Bash, tar, curl or wget, kernel/glibc/libstdc++ compatibility, disk space, and outbound HTTPS access for the download. A successful shell login does not guarantee that all of these prerequisites exist.
The folder opens but PHP features are missing
Confirm that the PHP executable, project dependencies, and relevant language tooling are installed on the remote host. Reopen the remote window after installing or changing an extension so the remote language service starts with the new environment.

Install WP-CLI on the remote server or correct the non-interactive PATH as described above. Test both an interactive command and the exact --ssh invocation, because they may receive different shell initialization.
The command acts on the wrong site
Stop and inspect the alias, hostname, port, filesystem path, and multisite --url. Run a read-only core version or option get command and print the resolved target before retrying a write operation.
The mounted workspace is painfully slow
Move bulk operations to rsync or work directly in a Remote-SSH window. SSHFS remains useful for small inspections, but network filesystem latency is a poor foundation for tools that scan or rewrite many files.
A production edit is risky or unclear
Pause the change, create a backup, capture the current commit and configuration, reproduce it in staging, and use a reversible release rather than an untracked live edit.

- Transport: the exact SSH command succeeds, the host key is trusted, and the intended port is recorded.
- Editor: Remote-SSH connects, the remote folder is correct, and required extensions run remotely.
- Runtime: PHP, the web server, database access, Git, and WP-CLI respond from the project directory.
- Targeting: aliases, paths, ports, and multisite URLs identify the intended environment.
- Change control: custom code is committed, staging has been tested, and the production commit is known.
- Recovery: backups are available and the rollback procedure is documented before any destructive command.
With those checks in place, SSH becomes a predictable development transport rather than a shortcut around deployment discipline: the editor operates where the code runs, WP-CLI targets a named installation, and every production change has an auditable path back to a known state.
