This method is intended for a forgotten password when an emailed reset link is unavailable or cannot be used. It requires SSH access to the machine running Coolify and permission to run Docker. Coolify Cloud users cannot access the underlying container and should contact the Coolify team for account recovery instead.

Confirm that this is a self-hosted Coolify server. The procedure below depends on entering commands on the host that runs the Coolify container, so it is not available to users of Coolify Cloud.
- SSH access: You need an account that can connect to the server. The documented example is
ssh root@<server-ip>. - Docker permission: Your SSH account must be allowed to run Docker commands. If it is not, prepend
sudoto the Docker commands or use an administrator account. - Root login email: Have the email address currently associated with the Coolify root account. You will use it after the password is reset unless you also need to change the email.
- Replacement password: Prepare a unique, long password and save it in a password manager. The terminal command checks that both entries match, but it does not enforce the password rules used by the dashboard.
Coolify’s general self-hosting guidance lists a baseline of 2 CPU cores, 2 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of disk space. Those figures describe the infrastructure for a self-hosted installation; they are not special requirements imposed by the password-reset command.

Reset the password from the server terminal
1. Connect to the Coolify host
Open an SSH session to the machine where Coolify is installed:
ssh root@<server-ip>Replace <server-ip> with the server’s address. If you use a non-root SSH account, that account must have Docker permission. Where it does not, run the Docker commands with sudo, for example sudo docker inspect ... and sudo docker exec ....

The account used for SSH only needs enough operating-system privilege to inspect and execute commands in the Coolify container.
2. Check that the Coolify container is running
Run:
docker inspect --format '{{.State.Status}}' coolifyThe expected output is:
runningThe command asks Docker for the state of the container named coolify. If Docker reports running, continue. If it reports another state or cannot find the container, do not run the reset command against a different name by guesswork. Confirm that you are connected to the correct host and that the installation’s container is actually named coolify. A non-running or missing container is an installation or host-access issue rather than a password-entry issue; resolve that with the server administrator or the applicable Coolify deployment documentation before proceeding.
3. Run Coolify’s root-password command
With the container running, execute:
docker exec -it coolify php artisan root:reset-passwordIf your SSH account needs elevated Docker access, use:
sudo docker exec -it coolify php artisan root:reset-passwordThe command prompts for the new password twice. Enter the same value at both prompts. The terminal does not echo the password while you type; that is normal. The command checks that the two entries match, but it does not apply the dashboard’s password-strength rules, so choose a long, random, unique value rather than relying on the command to reject a weak one.

Do not paste the password into a shell command or save it in shell history. Type it at the hidden prompts, then store the finished credential in a password manager. If the two entries differ, repeat the command and enter the intended value carefully.
4. Sign in again
After the command completes, open the Coolify login page in a private or incognito browser window. Sign in with:
- The root account’s current email address.
- The new password you entered in the terminal.
- The 2FA code, if two-factor authentication is enabled for the root account.
A private window avoids confusing a stale browser session with the result of the reset. It does not change the account or bypass 2FA; it simply gives you a clean login context.
What the reset changes—and what it does not
Changes to expect
- The password for the Coolify root account is replaced with the value entered in the terminal.
- The root account is signed out on every device.
- Every API token owned by that root account is revoked.
Because the tokens are revoked, create replacement tokens after you sign in if automation or integrations use the root account. Revoked tokens cannot be restored. Update each dependent integration with a newly generated token rather than trying to reuse the old value.
Operations that continue
The reset command does not restart Coolify. It does not interrupt deployed applications, databases, or services. Those workloads should continue running while the account credential is changed, although you still need to plan any later token updates for automation that authenticates as the root account.
Other users
The reset targets only the root account. Other users’ sessions and API tokens are unaffected. If another user’s access is the problem, resetting the root password is not a substitute for that user’s own recovery process.

Choose the recovery method that matches the failure
Not every sign-in problem requires a server-side password reset. Use the method that matches the access you still have:

The terminal reset is the least dependent on email, but it cannot be performed without access to the server that runs Coolify. A dashboard profile change is simplest when a valid session remains open. An emailed link is convenient only when the configured mailbox and transactional email delivery work.

If the root email address is unavailable
A successful password reset still requires the current root email at login. If that address is wrong, inaccessible, or no longer usable, Coolify documents this command for self-hosted instances:
docker exec -it coolify php artisan root:change-emailUse the same SSH and Docker-permission requirements as the password reset. The email-change command changes the login email immediately and does not send a verification message. Treat the new address as a credential-recovery detail: use an inbox you control, record it in your password manager, and then sign in with that address and the newly reset password.
Changing the email does not itself solve a forgotten password. If both the password and email are unusable, perform the password reset first, change the email as needed, and then log in with the resulting credentials.

If two-factor authentication is the blocker
The password-reset command does not remove 2FA. After resetting the password, the login page still asks for the authenticator code when 2FA is enabled.

Coolify has a separate Reset 2FA procedure for this case. Use that procedure after recovering or knowing the password, and follow the current official instructions for your installed version. Clearing 2FA removes the authenticator setup and the associated recovery codes, so you must configure two-factor authentication again and save the new recovery codes securely once access is restored.
If you still have a valid 2FA code, enter it during the normal login after the password reset. Do not assume that changing the password disables an existing authenticator.

Docker says permission is denied
Your SSH account can reach the server but cannot communicate with Docker. Re-run the command with sudo if that account is authorized to elevate, or ask the server administrator to grant the account the required Docker permission. The Coolify command itself has not failed until it is actually executed inside the container.
The container status is not running
The documented check must return running. If it returns another state, verify the host and container name before attempting recovery. Do not substitute a similarly named container without confirming that it is the Coolify application container. If the installation is stopped, investigate the host or deployment state through the administrator or current Coolify operational documentation; the password command is not a container-start command.
Docker cannot find coolify
This usually means the command is being run on the wrong machine, the installation uses a different container name, or the container has not been created. Confirm the SSH destination and the installation’s actual container configuration. The documented reset syntax specifically targets a container named coolify.
The password prompts do not accept the value
Hidden terminal input is expected: characters will not appear while typing. Enter the same password at both prompts. If the command reports a mismatch, run it again and type the value carefully. Since the command does not enforce dashboard password rules, a rejection at this stage is about the two entries not matching rather than a strength-policy warning.

The new password works but an automation job fails
The reset revokes every API token owned by the root account. Sign in, create replacement tokens, and update the affected automation with those new values. There is no supported way to restore the revoked tokens.

Close the old session and retry in a private browser window. The reset signs the root account out on every device, so an existing tab may display a stale page or redirect. Use the root email, the new password, and the 2FA code when applicable.
Security steps after regaining access
- Confirm that the root email shown in the account is an inbox you control. If it is not, change it with the documented
root:change-emailcommand. - Review integrations that used root-account API tokens. Generate replacement tokens and update those integrations because the previous tokens are permanently revoked.
- Store the new password in a password manager rather than in a shell history file, chat message, or deployment script.
- If 2FA was cleared during recovery, enroll an authenticator again and store the newly issued recovery codes in a separate secure location.
- Close the SSH session when the recovery work is finished, especially if you connected with a privileged account.
These steps do not alter deployed workloads; they secure the credentials and integrations affected by the account reset.

For a non-root SSH account that lacks direct Docker permission, prepend sudo to the Docker commands. The SSH command itself depends on how that account is configured on the server.
When to contact Coolify support
Contact the Coolify team if you use Coolify Cloud, because Cloud users cannot access the container that runs the reset command. For self-hosted installations, seek help from the server administrator when you cannot establish SSH access, cannot obtain Docker permission, or the expected coolify container is absent. Those conditions must be resolved at the host or deployment layer before an account-password command can run.
